Oh mastodon, will you ever change? Ask for help on issue A, get lectured about how bad twitter was... 🙄

jni,
@jni@fosstodon.org avatar

@vicgrinberg that response seems a bit harsh? The account was just trying to explain why issue A exists in response to your disappointment… there was a rationale and the project is considering revisiting that decision, and you can influence the outcome. I think that’s useful info!

Anyway, I guess what I’m trying to say is as a curious bystander with interest in issue A (I myself have struggled with it) I “enjoyed” the lecture. Sorry to hear that your experience of it was negative. 😢

Data sharing: ''it costs $90 to download a GB of data. And we are starting to talk about PB dataset which would cost $90k. No-one would download it.'' @jonny p2p for the win ?

jni,
@jni@fosstodon.org avatar

@jonny @albertcardona @jeremyforest

Why not both? I presume we’ve all had the experience of dead torrents. Would be good to have an archive that guaranteed uptime, but the archive is just a big-ass torrent seed, and data that is heavily used can be easily downloaded P2P with no load on the archive.

Honestly it’s so stupid we didn’t always do this…

Any updates on the new open source licensing terms that Prusa was exploring in

If I want to buy an open source, forever repairable, hackable 3D printer today, is Prusa the best choice or…?

TIL you can book YouTube Premium annually for 129 € (instead of 155,88 €): https://www.youtube.com/premium/annual

I would sacrifice any streaming service for YouTube Premium.

@hynek not in Australia. And they just jacked up the family monthly price from $23 to $30-fucking-3 AUD. How’s that for inflation.

@daringfireball I got a Ryan London for my iPhone 13 mini (which I bought right before the event in case they discontinued it, which they did) based on your reviews from last year. It’s glorious. Hard agree on the soft camera bump. Look and feel are 👌. Unlike you I prefer the lack of a logo on the back.

The @napari 0.4.19rc1 release candidate is now out on PyPI! You can install it with pip install -U --pre napari. Please help us put out the best release possible by trying it out! This is primarily a bug fix and maintenance release but there's still exciting stuff happening. Here's what you can expect:

  • you can now install pydantic 2 in the same environment as napari. 🥳
  • working with Labels is now much faster and more accurate thanks to an overhaul of how colours are mapped

I just announced my conditional acceptance of https://peps.python.org/pep-0723/ over at https://discuss.python.org/t/pep-722-723-decision/36763 . Great post by @vicgrinberg discussing a common issue on the Fediverse: unsolicited advice. It's important for us to reflect and consider if our advice is truly wanted before jumping into comment sections. Instead of giving unsolicited advice, let's resist the urge and refrain from doing so.

I was just so despondent about Twitter I couldn't bring myself to spruik 'engagement', so I retired my social media course.

Then I wrote this https://thesiswhisperer.com/2023/07/10/academicenshittification/

As a result, I was asked to go to Tasmania to talk to a bunch of academics about social media (yay!).

But now I've got to write an abstract for the session about the future of social media, and ... I've got nothing.

jni,
@jni@fosstodon.org avatar

@KathyReid @thesiswhisperer “While I can’t find a lot of empirical work in this space, the work that does exist suggests that the choice of which social media platforms upon which to build a presence is driven largely through its ability to attract and recruit new students” — big insight for me. I love it here but I agree it’s not the place to find prospective undergrads.

I need a new TV and the “smart” TVs are so much grosser than I realized (fucking ADS when I turn them on?? What?!?!) I want a high-quality OLED that just has an HDMI input. I kinda want it to have one input and I will buy my own discrete switcher thanks, given how little I trust the companies making these. Is this even possible any more? I am vaguely aware that “commercial panels” are a thing but they all seem lower quality and hard to source and missing basic stuff like color calibration.

jni,
@jni@fosstodon.org avatar

@glyph fwiw I have an LG C2 that I have never connected to the network. Turned off motion smoothing and it works very nicely as a dumb monitor. No there are no ads or funky splash screens on boot, just an LG logo splash on shutdown. It gets turned on automatically by whatever device I’ve got plugged in and this has worked very reliably (more than I can say about the dead Samsung it replaced).

jni,
@jni@fosstodon.org avatar

@glyph @mpirnat not at all… @mpirnat did you connect your TV to the network to start with?

I don’t even know what the wake word is… I can give it a try later today LOL.

jni,
@jni@fosstodon.org avatar

@mpirnat @glyph well I am happy to report that I just spent several minutes saying “Hi LG” in every possible tone and accent at my TV and at the remote, to no effect. I’m also happy that my initial instinct to airgap the bloody thing was correct.

There is also a minor possibility that we get the European model here in Australia and it has less creepy defaults as a result… But I doubt it tbh.

Enhance your calm: "Demolition Man" turns 30. Sci-fi action comedy is an under-appreciated gem of '90s action movies, precisely because it unapologetically leans into the massive explosions and campy humor with wild abandon. https://arstechnica.com/culture/2023/10/enhance-your-calm-demolition-man-turns-30/

I think in the future if I am ever writing a code paper I am just going to take the list of contributors and copy paste that into the authors list with links to a git blame (with consent). If we're going to have a credit assignment system as broken as authorship, we can at least err on the "include everyone" side of the brokenness - I want the person who submits a PR to fix a typo in the docs to get credit for helping. People being incentivized to make lots of little contributions is good, actually.

It should be the same way with regular papers too - put your lab techs and undergrads on the paper! Put on the grad student/postdoc who isnt explicitly assigned to this project but ends up helping out anyway. Its literally free! Authorship inflation is a made up problem thats not even a problem!

jni,
@jni@fosstodon.org avatar

@jonny @herrsaalfeld haha of course. But the incentive is there to create low quality PRs and those PRs can rob you of time whether or not you merge them.
