Nach den Morden von Hanau habe ich mich gefragt, was ich persönlich tun kann, um antifaschistische Infrastrukturprojekte zu unterstützen. Ich habe mich für eine regelmäßige monatliche Spende an das Antifaschistische Pressearchiv und Bildungszentrum Berlin e. V. (apabiz) entschieden. Es gibt natürlich noch andere unterstützenswerte Initiativen. Die Lage ist ernst und Initiativen, die kontinuierlich zur Ideologie und Vernetzung der extremen Rechten arbeiten, brauchen Unterstützung für ihre Arbeit.

Wenn ein Artikel wie bei Correctiv erscheint, ist das der Endpunkt einer langen Recherche und baut auf Wissen auf, das kontinuierlich zu diesem Thema arbeitende Menschen sammeln und archivieren. Mir ist es wichtig, dass es solche Rechercheanlaufpunkte und Bibliotheken gibt.

Der neue (letzte?) Film von Hayao Miyazaki für Studio Ghibli ist ganz, ganz fantastisch. Bitte lasst euch nicht von Internetmeinungsäußerungen abhalten, dass er so „verstörend“ oder „verwirrend“ sei. Er ist komplett klar und verständlich, wenn man schon vorher selbst ein bisschen verwirrt im Kopf ist.

Here is why I blame Wilhelm II, the last German Emperor and King of Prussia from 1888 until 1918, for keeping Germans from enjoying Mickey Mouse in the Public Domain.

The national treatment provided for in Art. 1 of the Convention means that German law independently calculates the term of protection for works by US authors without taking into account the term comparison. As a result, a work created by a US citizen remains protected by copyright in Germany, even if the author's rights in the USA have already expired, until 70 years after the author's death.

Although the basis for copyright protection in Germany (and the USA) is the Berne Convention which states that a work cannot be protected longer than in the state of the creator, this doesn’t help Mickey Mouse to break free.

Article 7(8) of the Berne Convention lets bilateral treaties take precedence: „In any case, the term shall be governed by the legislation of the country where protection is claimed; however, unless the legislation of that country otherwise provides, the term shall not exceed the term fixed in the country of origin of the work.“

This means that a treaty from 1892, signed when Kaiser Wilhelm was in power, will cause the copyright protection of Steamboat Willie in Germany to run until 2042 – even though it lost copyright protection in the United States. This situation is absurd and probably not intended by the legislature. It is, however, the legal reality we are in. Thanks, Wilhelm II.
