Ha

If only my knowledge of EU law had the desired impact this fast every time 🙂

My father wanted to pay a EDF French electricity bill from a Belgian bank account, and was told that this was not possible because the bank was outside France

I formulated a stern email to EDF for him, in French, stipulating this was not allowed as a reason within the Single European Payment Area (SEPA), and within a few hours they relented in a grovelling email!

@jon Whenever I have experienced IBAN discrimination in France, I have sent this PDF and they have changed their tune right quick.

May it serve you (and your father) well.

@apicultor @jon well found!

@apicultor Cool! That’s super!

@jon I wonder why they don’t change this process after a while. What’s preventing them from accepting EU IBANs? Why is the default answer no?

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@grlodi how apologetic the second email was makes me think they’re now used to giving in if customers are pushy. But the default should have been changed years ago.

grlodi,
@grlodi@mastodon.social avatar

@jon Yeah, I really wonder why they didn’t change the default, like is there any economics aspect I’m missing? Or maybe they just don’t care at all

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@grlodi I wondered the same. I don’t know.

frederik,
@frederik@mastodon.social avatar

@jon I had the same recently when I tried to buy an internet contract in Spain. Even in the shop they weren’t able to help me, the starting letters of the IBAN „ES“ were hardcoded into the form. Not legal but they don’t care 🤷‍♂️

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@frederik Take it to a consumer organisation and complain!

vermeer,
@vermeer@mstdn.social avatar

@jon one could think that the French have left EU not the UK

markus,

@vermeer @jon
The UK left the EU.
The French didn't leave the EU - they never joined. They joined the UE 😉

@jon try that with Deutsche Telekom pls

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@timo A Verbraucherzentrale would be very happy to help if they refuse.

timo,
@timo@hetzel.net avatar

@jon not me, but I’ve heard multiple complaints from people using Bunq when they only had NL IBANs. Too mich trouble in Schland so they now advertise they have DE IBANs.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@timo IBAN in France is generally fine. Here it's a headache with non French telephone numbers that never fit online forms…
