I love how the Protocol itself is BEP 3 after BEP 2 that just explains how to use reStructured Text and BEP 0 is the index page which misspells "proporsals."

compared to other protocol and web specs, specifications are always refreshingly gestural and clearly in a state of being half finished when the thing takes off unexpectedly

1/ Here's a thought to advance to research. If it has problems, I think they're worth solving.

@petersuber the current generation of flagship LLMs don't really summarize text, they just output text that looks like what a summary would look like, but I think the idea you're circling here - model laundering - is an underexplored one. I've posed this question idly a few times: if it's legal for github copilot to reproduce large sections of license-protected code, why wouldn't it be legal to overfit a model on scientific literature and "generate" something very close, but not exactly, the original text? The utility of LLM "summarizations" are unclear to me, and I think are largely oppositional technologies towards a world of free information (see https://jon-e.net/surveillance-graphs/#the-near-future-of-surveillance-capitalism-knowledge-graphs-get-chatbots ), but i appreciate the adversarial attitude ya got here <3

I wanna know what a new generation of looks like that's actively oppositional to the information economy. one that implements adversarial interoperability as a first class feature, that hops over API limits intended to keep you walled in gardens. one that makes a mockery of egress and storage fees. one where we don't plan to play nice, because the information conglomerates aren't either!

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

@pettter
BitTorrent is lovely and still serves us well in a bunch of ways. but notice how it's used! very good for TV, movies, games, etc. not very good for the structured data that info conglomerates feed on! trackers teach us a lot about the social structures that make distributed archives work, but are single points of failure that put small groups of ppl at risk. we can learn from it and extend it โค๏ธ

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

the age of universal openness as an end in itself has passed! we want to take our information back, but not make ourselves sitting ducks for the info conglomerates to prey on after they figure out the plan. we need encrypted protocols that let us share amongst ourselves, make what should be open open, but keep for ourselves what is ours!

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

that last part is still tricky! we olde pirates dreamed of a world where musicians could directly distribute their art and we paid them directly for it. free to listen, pay what you can. the same for publishing! can we make a world of free culture without looming profiteers? to make a heterogeneous space of public and private living on top of one another, where we can publish our magnum opus and whisper amongst our friends

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

@sqncs
haha not likely. the protocol is designed to ensure that large information aggregators stay in between you and everyone else. the federation architecture (still unspec'd) is extremely weak, where self hosting is mostly paying for the privilege of being scraped by a big graph service. it's a step back from p2p, not towards it!

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

@trochee
I'm having a rare day where I feel energy and joy and hope and depression feels like a joke I used to tell myself. I am wringing it for what it's worth!

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

@sqncs
not sure what ya mean here!

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

@sqncs oh ya, it's sort of unclear - there are these 'big graph services' that are supposed to rehost entire copies of the network, and they are supposed to scrape from individual "personal data stores." Then the algo providers are supposed to ingest data from the big graph stores and send your PDS a feed. Currently the implementation works like the PDS needing to store all the data, but in the code and their docs they say that will change to be the algo providers. so it's sorta classic cloud logic, you don't need to host the entire network, but it's dependent on someone hosting the entire network, and you are dependent on them computing algorithms on your behalf. The idea that you can make your own algorithm is I think pretty bogus, at least from how it looks now.

@gothnbass
same, we'll meet on the other side of our sketches ya?

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

@gothnbass of course!!!!!!!!!! i feel like there are many projects in a phase of formulation and looking for points of commonality so we can all push together and in parallel <3

Big publishers' journals are not to be admired.

Meta-psychology and a few other scholar-led journals do computational reproducibility checks of all submissions.
Do ANY non-scholar-led journals (e.g., owned by the big publishers) do this?
If not, I rest my case! ๐Ÿ˜†

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

@alexh
the bar is extremely low to improving on for profit journal information systems!

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

@alexh
(by that I mean I think this is cool and we should do more things like this!)

Taweret, to random

okay but the pods taking over your real body when they grew another body still doesn't make sense tho

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

@Taweret yeah what are the seed pods for anyway in that case

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

@moira
@Taweret
my retcon will be that the pods had nothing to do with it, and it was just the kiss from the protagonists clay slabs for lips that turned people emotionless and communists. his bad dream was just him continually sleepwalking and making out with everyone. it also explains his intractable horny.

forestine, to random

my friend called just as the movie was about to start. bodies being snatched i guess?

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

@forestine the pod cops were just scrambled from the hot dog show and are trying to hunt down the protagonist

moira, to random
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

whaddya think the range is on those pod bodies? How far away do you have to get before the mind transferal thing happens.

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

@moira needing to get within every basement and greenhouse seems like a lot of labor, they need to get some satellites and get things set up in a cocoon depot

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

@nev
this question hits different after seeing how they don't even use their own body, like the pod body double is basically a soul antenna

jonny, to random
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

Oh you know i'm going with the false colorized version of

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

why is he trying to save the cocoon during a full blown bodysnatching

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

i'm glad to be apparently a few minutes behind the b/w version so i get warnings of impending horny

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

double windmill syringe to the ass is the blocking every actor dreams to receive

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

it's actually true that in los angeles if you run in any direction for long enough you end up trapped in a quarry and surrounded by pod cops

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

truly unquenchable horny is when you can't resist the smooch in the quarry mud on the verge of sleep

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

holy stapled on ending
