Eye surgery in the morning. Gonna likely be off line for a bit.

Will check in in a few days. Here's hoping!

Observe this body.

For points, guess his length from the tip of his back feet to tip of his front. Inches or cm are good.

@NanoRaptor 15 cm?

With Nicolle Wallace, Tim Miller calls Trump's and the GOP's attack on American justice "Big Lie 2.0." Yes: their continuing institutional insurrection; scorched earth for democracy.

juandesant,
@juandesant@astrodon.social avatar

@jeffjarvis the problem I find with that framing is that it validates the “big lie” narrative, and thus can be seen as equally bogus.

Do you want to understand the job of content moderators? This polished game from @mmasnick gives you a good glimpse of what it is like. It is “unfun” in an entertaining way.

I love the opening paragraph of @timbray’s post on Fediverse Governance: «When there’s anything that you’re a member or citizen or user of, you should be concerned about who runs it and how it’s run.»

Very well said, and it gets better after that:
«No privately-owned social-media platform has managed to provide a quality non-abusive experience for any significant fraction of a human lifetime.»

Please, go and read it:

(1/2) Sometimes, software is well design and has useful features, which are well document… how amazing is that?

I was pleasantly surprised by Jama Connect, the software that I've used both at SKAO and ALMA to manage requirements. I needed to change many licenses at once... and just by searching on the help for batch process user licenses I got to this page:

https://help.jamasoftware.com/ah/en/administration/organization-administrator/manage-users/license-types-209077/batch-update-license-types.html

(How many software packages have open, linkable help? Yeah, not that many!)

Following a prompt by @BasicAppleGuy, these are the first 8 applications I downloaded on July 3rd 2009 for my first iPhone, an iPhone 3GS, the first model with an incorporated gyroscope.

Notice how 5 of them are either installed, or still downloadable. That’s remarkable…

I miss Zen Bound… but not so much as to buy a Nintendo Switch just for it 😉 http://zenbound.com

That’s a weird one.

Bartender was sold to someone new and neither party proactively told their users.

I have Bartender installed on 2 Macs and had no idea. I double checked my email and didn’t have anything from them either 🤷🏻‍♂️

https://www.macrumors.com/2024/06/04/bartender-mac-app-new-owner/

juandesant,
@juandesant@astrodon.social avatar

@matt very weird indeed.

Specially problematic because Bartender records the screen to achieve its magic. Having obscure owners with access to a potential screenshot of all my activity has just made me uninstall it.

matt, (edited ) to random
@matt@isfeeling.social avatar

Yup, this is the issue. It's a high-trust sort of app, and it doesn't take too much to lose that trust. I just uninstalled the app myself.

Fortunately, I made a video about Hidden Bar a few months ago so I just opened that again and am back in business. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/hidden-bar/id1452453066

I've also been told Ice is good (and open source) but I haven't used it yet myself. https://github.com/jordanbaird/Ice

juandesant,
@juandesant@astrodon.social avatar

@matt indeed, I just uninstalled it from both my home and work computer. Funnily enough, it’s “hot” on Setapp right now… which probably means it is being uninstalled, not installed.

Or maybe there is no such thing as bad publicity? 🤷🏻‍♂️

The Joint ALMA Observatory is hiring a Systems Engineer! If you're the successful applicant, you will be collaborating with both operational and development system engineering tasks.

The alt-text of the image cointains more detail, but the full details of the application, including how to apply, can be found at https://www.comeet.com/jobs/almaobservatory/F5.001/systems-engineer--grade-15/EF.64C

Please, come and join us, or help us by forwarding this vacancy to one ore more suitable candidates!

Today is my second year anniversary since I joined the Joint ALMA Observatory as JAO Development System Engineer! Can't believe how quickly time flies… and we've done an extraordinary amount of work in these 2 years!

The cyberattack sadly also affected our newsletter archive, so I cannot point to the nice entry that they published just one month after I joined.

Thanks to Adobe’s licensing shenanigans today I learned about @penpot 1, an open-source design tool that you can self-host and gives you HTML+CSS+SVG code that represents your designs.

I remember having found something similar just for macOS, but I cannot remember the name now…

And looking for it I also found UXPin 2.
