I'm old enough to remember how @creativecommons was founded as a way for independent creators to safely share their work and build upon each other.

In 2024, their take is now "billion dollar companies plagiarizing your art is fair use".

https://creativecommons.org/2023/02/17/fair-use-training-generative-ai/

Hats off to the author, you don't see that kind of, uh, skillful rhetoric chicanery every day. Like "generative AI doesn't compete with artists because artists are not in the data market". 😬

juandesant,
@juandesant@astrodon.social avatar

@scy @creativecommons how can any Share-Alike license be used by a company like OpenAI or Anthropic for training? And of course, no of the non-comercial ones should be used in that way. You can force the model to reproduce the output but not the source…

Maybe we need to create a Sensible Commons…

@apolitosb if we can trace the movements, we should be able to keep the embargo. Of course, the moment we do that energy prices soar — except for renewables — and we will have the Russian-backed political teams claiming for the end of the support to Ukraine, and they would get it…

I am just not sure how the defense is going to explain away this document.

• Brand new account used for a single purpose, stated to be “real estate”
• Deposit of $131K from Cohen’s HELOC
• Next day wire to Cliffords’ attorney
• Handwritten notes of how much to reimburse, and to “gross up” because it’s being reported as income not reimbursment

This all comports with a week of testimony and shows what the structured payments from TTO were for: to repay the loan Cohen took out to pay Clifford.

juandesant,
@juandesant@astrodon.social avatar

@Cdespinosa they don't need to explain it away. They just need to install the idea that the predicate crime was not there. If that is the case, the book manipulation is just a fault, not a crime.

But as @tkanefield says, once you are in front of a jury, the odds favor the prosecution.

Hoy he vuelto a ver Edge of Tomorrow, una película que se debía haber llamado “Vive. Muere. Repite”, y los autores de la mayor parte de películas de superhéroes tienen mucho que aprender de ella. Algunas lecciones:

  1. Solo necesitas 1h45 para presentar personajes, explicar una trama compleja y no aburrir

  2. No hace falta explicar la infancia de los protagonistas

  3. Muchos FX no mejoran un mal guion, pero si lo tienes 💯

  4. Se puede emocionar en una película de acción sin caer en sensiblerías

juandesant,
@juandesant@astrodon.social avatar

@runjaj el título de Edge of Tomorrow es lo peor. Pero el subtítulo era literalmente Live. Die. Repeat.

Tom Cruise está bastante bien en esta peli, pero Emily Blunt le roba el protagonismo cada vez quiere.

Are you a graduate student, postdoc, or early career researcher interested in ALMA, sharing that information with the community, and receiving up to $10,000 to support your research? You can be an ALMA Ambassador!

Ambassadors receive training in interferometry, the latest ALMA capabilities, and tips for ALMA proposals. They will help then organize and lead proposal preparation and/or data processing/analysis workshops.

Applications are due on 24 May 2024.

🧑‍💻 NetBSD On The State & Future Of X.Org/X11
@phoronix

「 The bad news is that to have applications running we require access to a larger open source ecosystem, and that ecosystem has a lot of churn and is easily distracted by shiny new squirrels. The process of upstreaming stuff to X.Org is an ongoing process, but it's likely we'll run into things that will never be suitable for upstream 」

Thanks for the link, @jbzfn, but I think it is important to emphasize the main message from the original article, not the summary from @phoronix: the *BSDs have their own fork of with a richer feature set, and better generic acceleration compatibility.

The question is about when does BSD stop supporting that fork, and for now the answer is that they will still do it…
