Russian Telegram channels have posted the identity of one man arrested in connection with the Crocus City Hall attack. His documents identify him as hailing from Tajikistan.

Other channels have spent the last 12 hours trying to build a connection between the attackers (possibly ISIS or ISIS-K) and the Chechen militias, cooperating with Ukraine, who have conducted cross-border raids in Belgorod.

Moscow will have the groundwork laid to justify further escalations in Ukraine.

They're wasting no time. This "interrogation" footage — which shows a man who has been clearly beaten, who is trembling uncontrollably — is already being used to validate the insane idea that Ukraine orchestrated the terror attack.

Boy howdy, the White House making demands of Ukraine right now is pretty brassy. https://www.ft.com/content/98f15b60-bc4d-4d3c-9e57-cbdde122ac0c

Another morning, another round of airstrikes on Urkaine.

This morning, however, Moscow seems to be skipping Kyiv (for the time being.) Missiles are absolutely pounding Kharkiv — a city which had been partially occupied by Russia in early 2022, and which they've tried to destroy ever since.

The air defenses have a hard time working there, thanks to its proximity to Russia itself. Initial reports say there have been 15 explosions, mainly targeting the energy infrastructure.

Kharkiv is in total darkness, now, as Russia also pounds a range of cities in the east.

Russia also launched an estimated 40 Shaheed drones — all of which, reportedly, have been shot down.

I mentioned during last night's light show that the Shaheed's are Iranian-made: Only partly true. (Tired brain!) Russia has domesticated production of these loitering munitions, which is bad news. Ukraine has been trying to match that capability, but needs more help from NATO to build that out.

Things are bad in , sure. But this country is innovating the tools of its own liberation. All they need is time. https://www.bugeyedandshameless.com/p/in-the-air-raid-shelter

In a sign of how tired I am, I forgot I already tooted this out like an hour ago. 🤦‍♂️

I've only been here a week. Imagine how tired the Ukrainians are.

@justinling@mastodon.online avatar

@jfmezei It still works! It serves as both a shelter during the air raids and for public transport. I took it yesterday.

From the shelter under my hotel to a secret drone factory: Yes, things are dire for Ukraine, but there's a lot to feel optimistic about.

Well it's 3:30am here in Kyiv and we've got our first very serious air raid alert. 9 Tu-95 long-range bombers took over about 30 minutes ago, meaning Russia is likely to launch a barrage of cruise missiles across the country.

justinling,
@justinling@mastodon.online avatar

Oh, and...the strikes may not come. At least not yet.

Ukrainian media is reporting that the initial launches were simulations, and that there may have been no actual rockets.

People are reacting with 🥱🤨😁

justinling,
@justinling@mastodon.online avatar

Seems the missiles fired at Chernihiv were real. Reports of an initial rocket strike.

justinling,
@justinling@mastodon.online avatar

And now reports that the rockets are en route to Kyiv. Probably the Kh-59 cruise missile.

justinling,
@justinling@mastodon.online avatar

@jfmezei Yeah, and I believe they tried it. But given how good Ukraine's aerospace intelligence is, and the lead time between firing/arrival, I don't think it'd be super effective. Probably more like regular tests/positioning.

justinling,
@justinling@mastodon.online avatar

First explosions in Kyiv, per Ukrainian media. The air defense system is working.

justinling,
@justinling@mastodon.online avatar

Media reporting there's some 20 missiles over Ukraine. Another wave of rockets en route over the next 30 minutes or so. This is going to go on for awhile more, it seems like.

justinling,
@justinling@mastodon.online avatar

Ukrainian Air Force says the missiles have been changing course, zig-zagging through the region — first towards Rivne, then Kyiv, then Zhytomyr, then back again. Probably an attempt to thwart Ukraine's increasingly-successful air defense efforts.

Ukraine has already shot a few down. 💪

justinling,
@justinling@mastodon.online avatar

Reports of some big explosions above-ground. Russia has fired multiple Kh-47M2 hypersonic ballistic missiles at the capital.

Reports of interceptions, no reports of any successful strikes thus far.

justinling,
@justinling@mastodon.online avatar

Just a reminder that America has $60 billion in aid, which had been promised to Kyiv, sitting in Congress. Held up by politicians who seem to want Kyiv to lose. That includes critical missiles for Ukraine's air defenses. Without the aid, Ukraine may run out of air defense supplies by the end of the month.

justinling,
@justinling@mastodon.online avatar

Plenty of the missiles seem to be coming from Belgorod, the Russian town that pro-Ukrainian Russian volunteers have attacked and partially occupied in recent days.

"Belgorod will answer for this..." one Ukrainian Telegram account promises.

justinling,
@justinling@mastodon.online avatar

Just outside the city, debris from an intercepted missile hit a daycare. Elsewhere, some cars are on fire. It seems like the interception rate is pretty high.

justinling,
@justinling@mastodon.online avatar

Some massive rumblings overhead. But Ukrainian media says the attack appears to have been entirely repelled, apart from some damage from missile debris.

justinling,
@justinling@mastodon.online avatar

@CStamp More than a dozen of us down here. We've got plenty of water — but the continental breakfast, the loudspeaker informed us, won't be served.

If you're on the street, there's shelters every block or so. The metro also opens as a very effective shelter for people. The air raid siren app can direct you to your nearest one.

justinling,
@justinling@mastodon.online avatar

@CStamp Operational update from the city military administration.

justinling,
@justinling@mastodon.online avatar

And that's it. Alert over. There's been 8 injuries here in Kyiv, all minor. The air defence system did its job.
