Well it's 3:30am here in Kyiv and we've got our first very serious air raid alert. 9 Tu-95 long-range bombers took over about 30 minutes ago, meaning Russia is likely to launch a barrage of cruise missiles across the country.

@justinling@mastodon.online avatar

Luckily, I decided to wake up at the crack of 3 and was first down here in the bomb shelter, with this demon tree.

justinling,
@justinling@mastodon.online avatar

Looks like many of the launches have already taken place. Missiles will be nearing their targets — and Ukraine's air defence systems — within a half hour or so.

@justinling@mastodon.online avatar

Russia also looks to have scrambled an Su-35 to strike Chernihiv, northeast of Kyiv. This looks to be one of the more significant bombing campaigns of the past few weeks.

This is what the air raid map looks like: Every part of the country is under alert.

The memorial wall to the Ukrainians killed in the war is absolutely staggering. Just wall after wall, lined with faces. Totally gutting.

The first of my dispatches from Ukraine, a country facing the choice, imposed by others, of "collapse or large casualties.”

It would mean a lot of you shared this with your friends (and enemies.) https://www.bugeyedandshameless.com/p/on-the-train-to-kyiv

According to the Russian Volunteer Corps, one of the anti-Putin militias that have been wreaking havoc in Belgorod and Kursk over the past week, have detailed the losses they claim to have inflicted on Russia.

Also I've just arrived in Lviv, so expect periodic updates from Ukraine over this week, Mastodon.

So according to a tally from Boris Nadezhdin, who tried to run against Putin and was disqualified, one polling location in Moscow had more than 1,300 voters on the list, just over 500 votes for Putin, and nearly 500 "cancelled" ballots.

justinling,
@justinling@mastodon.online avatar

Nadezhdin is posting (unofficial, obviously) returns which claim Vladislav Davankov, the most liberal of the Kremlin-approved candidates (in that he's nationally in favor of peace talks with Ukraine) beat Putin in at least one polling location. I imagine there will be more to come like this

I mean why not just give him 100%, at this point

justinling,
@justinling@mastodon.online avatar

@the_Cornflower Navalny had supported Russians voting for anyone but Putin. His widow wrote in 'Navalny,' others voted Communist, some voted for the soft pro-peace candidate.

It's more that their votes were altered, probably.

The queue at the Ukrainian border is truly wild. Nearly 20km of trucks lined up down a narrow highway en route into Ukraine. Polish farmers, protesting Ukrainian imports, are only allowing one truck through an hour — meaning some of these trucks could be sitting there for a week or more.

justinling,
@justinling@mastodon.online avatar

@jfmezei Given the state of the border, the best thing to do (or so the consensus I got was) is drive from Poland to Lviv, then take the train from Lviv to Kyiv. Which is what I'm doing this morning!

justinling,
@justinling@mastodon.online avatar

@jfmezei Oh, just to be clear — that crazy queue is for truck traffic. The wait for passenger cars is more like 1-2 hours.

My plan for the way back, which will be a bit more relaxed, is to see if I can manage to go mostly on rail.

justinling,
@justinling@mastodon.online avatar

@jfmezei Hasn't worked at all in awhile. App works great, though!

justinling,
@justinling@mastodon.online avatar

@jfmezei Yeah, in my research it seemed that Kyiv-Warsaw is a huge pain. But I think connecting at the border and walking across is likely to be my route back.

There are rallies taking place around the world, today, in protest of Russia's sham elections. I'm at the one in Vilnius, where there's flags in support of the anti-Putin militias who've tried to seize control of Russian border towns, signs in support of Putin being tried as a war criminal, and supporters of Alexei Navanly

justinling,
@justinling@mastodon.online avatar

Lenoid Volkov, Navanly's chief of staff, was attacked with a hammer here just a few days ago — almost certainly on Putin's orders.

justinling,
@justinling@mastodon.online avatar

Many Russians are still voting today. While there aren't any good options, plenty are pursuing Navalny's plans to vote for anyone but Putin.

justinling,
@justinling@mastodon.online avatar

The park where the rally is taking place was trollingly renamed Boris Nemstov Park, for the popular opposition figure who Putin had murdered in 2015.

justinling,
@justinling@mastodon.online avatar

Queue to vote is definitely a few hundred people long.

justinling,
@justinling@mastodon.online avatar

@WTL How much they really count depends on how many people voted properly.
