@elduvelle Thanks! The 10,000 character limit is certainly nice. My current instance has the same, but is currently running an older version of Mastodon that lacks search, hashtag follows, and other features.

@mackuba Yes. It’s shorthand for the biconditional, ‘≡’. 😄

I’ve travelled from Ireland to Finland via Germany over the past few days and I was the only one wearing a face mask in the airport or onboard the plane. In a pandemic! WTF, people? Do better! 😷

And before anyone says it, yes we are still in a pandemic. And no, it is not only my responsibility to protect myself if I’m worried about catching . The point is my wearing a mask protects you, and vice versa. Transport and travel hubs are major vector for transmission.

“If, in the next technological era, all we’re doing is the same thing we do on screens now but on a screen that’s a couple inches in front of our eyes, that’s not inspiring.” Hear, hear! https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/what-apples-new-vision-pro-headset-might-do-to-our-brain/

Not only is the goal of showing virtual screens everywhere wildly unambitious, it’s just an enhanced version of what we already had in the ’90s. has the potential to create new, more socially engaged ways of working and playing. Bigger screens or windows hovering in virtual space, on the other hand, is the existing desktop computing paradigm on steroids. 🤷‍♂️

keithwilson,
@keithwilson@fediphilosophy.org avatar

@kaplag That’s fair, though the interface paradigm for is very much floating app windows in space. And lots of commentators are behaving as if a bigger display were the holy grail of computing. Yes, there is the opportunity for developers to offer bespoke alternatives, but so far it looks more of an evolutionary step than a revolution in how we interact with computers.

Dear security people: Is there any good reason in this day and age that an online order form should force me to paste my email into two different fields as some kind of "check"?

keithwilson,
@keithwilson@fediphilosophy.org avatar

@annaleen AFAIK it’s simply to guard against mistyping an email address. Completely pointless as you can see what you are typing on screen, unlike a password field where the characters are hidden.

I'm so tired of teenagers being "the chosen ones" in fiction. please, let a middle-aged woman save the universe! she's seen some shit and dealt with it. she's tired of it all. she doesn't give a fuck. she's angry. she will get this shit done.

This is ludicrous and will likely prompt further strike action. Lecturers cannot easily be replaced by temporary or core teaching staff. Not to mention further erosion of the right to strike in the UK. #ToryBritain #HigherEducation #academia https://apple.news/AOl5f-P0dT2Ko8Fu98lOkoQ

@TEG The government seems to be going out of its way to make the UK as unattractive as possible at the moment. Probably just sabre-rattling.

    Screencap of arXiv abstract: Exploring the Use of Large Language Models for Reference-Free Text Quality Evaluation: A Preliminary Empirical Study Yi Chen, Rui Wang, Haiyun Jiang, Shuming Shi, Ruifeng Xu Evaluating the quality of generated text is a challenging task in natural language processing. This difficulty arises from the inherent complexity and diversity of text. Recently, OpenAI's ChatGPT, a powerful large language model (LLM), has garnered significant attention due to its impressive performance in various tasks. Therefore, we present this report to investigate the effectiveness of LLMs, especially ChatGPT, and explore ways to optimize their use in assessing text quality. We compared three kinds of reference-free evaluation methods based on ChatGPT or similar LLMs. The experimental results prove that ChatGPT is capable to evaluate text quality effectively from various perspectives without reference and demonstrates superior performance than most existing automatic metrics. In particular, the Explicit Score, which utilizes ChatGPT to generate a numeric score measuring text quality, is the most effective and reliable method among the three exploited approaches. However, directly comparing the quality of two texts using ChatGPT may lead to suboptimal results. We hope this report will provide valuable insights into selecting appropriate methods for evaluating text quality with LLMs such as ChatGPT.
    Screencap of arXiv abstract: ChatGPT Outperforms Crowd-Workers for Text-Annotation Tasks Fabrizio Gilardi, Meysam Alizadeh, Maël Kubli Many NLP applications require manual data annotations for a variety of tasks, notably to train classifiers or evaluate the performance of unsupervised models. Depending on the size and degree of complexity, the tasks may be conducted by crowd-workers on platforms such as MTurk as well as trained annotators, such as research assistants. Using a sample of 2,382 tweets, we demonstrate that ChatGPT outperforms crowd-workers for several annotation tasks, including relevance, stance, topics, and frames detection. Specifically, the zero-shot accuracy of ChatGPT exceeds that of crowd-workers for four out of five tasks, while ChatGPT's intercoder agreement exceeds that of both crowd-workers and trained annotators for all tasks. Moreover, the per-annotation cost of ChatGPT is less than $0.003 -- about twenty times cheaper than MTurk. These results show the potential of large language models to drastically increase the efficiency of text classification.

    @hirad @MaryPot @feditips Fetching toots on demand from a profile that it is being browsed isn’t unrealistic since it’s not necessary to fetch them all at once. Replies are more tricky, but it would make sense for the instance that holds the original post to cache these over time. In any case, I’m not criticising the implementation, but the user experience, which is partly a consequence of design constraints imposed by Mastodon’s federated structure and the ActivityPub protocol.
