@elduvelle Thanks! The 10,000 character limit is certainly nice. My current instance has the same, but is currently running an older version of Mastodon that lacks search, hashtag follows, and other features.

Downing Street infested with fleas after Boris Johnson’s tenure, requiring carpets to be replaced “at vast expense”. You couldn’t ask for a better metaphor. 🪰 https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-68841797

I’ve travelled from Ireland to Finland via Germany over the past few days and I was the only one wearing a face mask in the airport or onboard the plane. In a pandemic! WTF, people? Do better! 😷

And before anyone says it, yes we are still in a pandemic. And no, it is not only my responsibility to protect myself if I’m worried about catching . The point is my wearing a mask protects you, and vice versa. Transport and travel hubs are major vector for transmission.

“If, in the next technological era, all we’re doing is the same thing we do on screens now but on a screen that’s a couple inches in front of our eyes, that’s not inspiring.” Hear, hear! https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/what-apples-new-vision-pro-headset-might-do-to-our-brain/

Not only is the goal of showing virtual screens everywhere wildly unambitious, it’s just an enhanced version of what we already had in the ’90s. has the potential to create new, more socially engaged ways of working and playing. Bigger screens or windows hovering in virtual space, on the other hand, is the existing desktop computing paradigm on steroids. 🤷‍♂️

keithwilson,
@keithwilson@fediphilosophy.org avatar

@kaplag That’s fair, though the interface paradigm for is very much floating app windows in space. And lots of commentators are behaving as if a bigger display were the holy grail of computing. Yes, there is the opportunity for developers to offer bespoke alternatives, but so far it looks more of an evolutionary step than a revolution in how we interact with computers.

The entirely predictable, and indeed predicted, cost of : a £100bn decline in UK exports. Brexit is now estimated to cost the UK around £100bn per year, or a 4% decline in GDP. What a disastrous self-inflicted policy! https://apple.news/AwBtARpsTQ36UYsmuX0Y8Hw

’s is simultaneously amazing and absurd. It’s perhaps the most technologically sophisticated consumer device ever created, with three displays, numerous cameras, sensors, and a whole new user interface paradigm. On the other hand, it’s like walking around with an iPad strapped to your face and costs as much as a second-hand car. 🤷‍♂️ https://www.apple.com/apple-vision-pro/specs/

The framing of this whole article is off. COVID is a serious disease which has killed millions. There is no evidence it is getting milder, despite attempts to normalise the pandemic, though vaccines certainly help. is real and reinfections increase the risk of developing it. 😆 In general ‘AI’ is a very poor name for a bunch of technologies that enable computers to do better pattern matching.

Even worse, is now using ‘AGI’ to mean better-than-human level performance (at what task exactly is unclear), which isn’t what the phrase is generally understood to mean at all.

The more you look into this whole area, the more you realise there’s a lot of smoke and mirrors: marketing hype dressed up as technological revolution.
