Kids, try not to do this. It's tedious. Just lay out the view you think is most defensible and defend it

It really would make much more sense for these conservative hardliners to be in their own party, throwing bombs at the GOP in a way more understandable to voters and for which they could be held collectively responsible in elections. That's how it works in actually functioning democracies.

What's happened to labor force participation

kevinjelliott,

@pkrugman Is growing worker power via low employment and maybe increased union activity luring people into the labor force? Are there indicators other than wages of improved working conditions?

Me: Absolutely.

People look at Americans moving to the South and Sunbelt states and say, "well, what can you say, people hate the cold."

...have you experienced a Kentucky summer? It's not even that far south, but the sun literally has weight as it beats down on you. It's so hot, so early in the morning, you literally cannot go outside. How is that different from living in a place where it's too cold to go outside?

I guess what I'm saying is the weather stuff is bullshit, it's all just housing affordability

The gap between John Thune’s power on paper and his power in politics will be now measured by how Tim Scott fares.

At the national level, we've known for a long time that blue states are net contributors to federal taxes and red states are net takers. Here, we see the pattern repeats itself within the state of --blue pays for healthcare and government jobs for the rest of the state.

I see two takeaways here, one about history and the other about politics. 1/2

Writing a proof final exam is so hard

kevinjelliott,

@TorbjornBjorkman Yeah, many of the approaches I've been looking at result in much more complicated tasks for students, often tasks of a nature they have no experience doing.

You Do Not, Under Any Circumstances, “Gotta Hand It to Tucker Carlson”

kevinjelliott,

@jacobtlevy A nice thing about Mastodon is that I can click on this story about this odious man--who should generally be ignored--and my engagement with it does not help spread content about him via algorithmic amplification.

I'm running my final exam through and reading the replies I'm just...like, these answers aren't great but they're good. I would be entirely satisfied in my teaching and the student's learning if one could produce this

Maybe my standards are too low

kevinjelliott,

@TorbjornBjorkman I did the same thing, warning them that I'd run the exam through a bunch of times, and didn't get any fishy results on that assignment. An earlier did get a bad one, unfortunately

I'm reading the text of this bill by @SeanCasten on reforming the --and indeed the powers of the federal judiciary more broadly--to curb its lawless abuse of power. My jaw is on the floor at how clever it is.

It transfers SCOTUS's appellate jurisdiction to the DC circuit, which will convene a randomly selected panel of judges from the circuit courts to handle appeals & limits injunctions & shadow docket.

https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/house-bill/642/text

kevinjelliott,

@volkris @SeanCasten If you read the Constitution, you'll see that Congress is vested with immense power over the courts. Just because we haven't used it in a while doesn't change that power.

Independence of the courts does not mean they get to dictate to the other branches what they may and may not do, but that's how that term is abused today--as a synonym for judicial supremacy. There's no more constitutionally ridiculous idea than that.

Astounding. The today blocked the ratification of the , the substance of which reads, in full: "Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex."

All but two voted against it, saying it's "unnecessary" to add to the . 50%+ of the population might beg to differ (esp post Dobbs).
