I'm trying to identify an office I worked in for a few months. I'm struggling to remember where this was 🙂

  • mid 2000s
  • in south of England
  • a financial company,
  • large crescent-shaped modern building, with a bit of a moat.
  • to the south, there was a village with a square church tower, very visible.
  • Road went south to north, then turned 90 degrees and went east.
  • i have photos taken around the time suggesting it was near Solihull

Anyone got any suggestions? Here's a napkin map.

@stevefaeembra Bellingcat has a search tool for finding different types of OSM features near each other:

I was aware of the Long Now Foundation's cute stylistic thing of adding a leading zero when they write the year (like this year is "02024") but I didn't realize they also had a cute name for it:

"Y10K Compliance"

Another view of eclipse history -- here are all the eclipses that have passed through Peoria, IL in the past two thousand years.

Cool map showing the date of the most recent total eclipse for every point in Indiana. Made by the Holcomb Observatory & Planetarium at Butler University.

Great concept, and I'm wondering if anyone has seen a similar map for a larger area, ideally an interactive map for the entire world where you can see the year of the last eclipse wherever you are. The data is available, so surely someone has made such a map?

@sara @akkana @alan Definitely needs help with the labelling, but here's an attempt that is unfortunately limited to year 1601 and later. Data from https://hub.arcgis.com/datasets/4122edbbe49a4f50bee6bf83548d7e9e_0/explore

kgjenkins,
@kgjenkins@mapstodon.space avatar

@akkana @sara @alan Yeah, the broken download on that page is pretty common, sadly. I used QGIS to download all the polygons from the underlying ArcGIS REST server: https://services.arcgis.com/6DIQcwlPy8knb6sg/arcgis/rest/services/SolarEclipsePath/FeatureServer/

The service is slow, but eventually delivers all the polygons.

kgjenkins,
@kgjenkins@mapstodon.space avatar

@sara @akkana @alan Is there a way to get a KMZ of the whole five millennium dataset from that page? (As far as I can tell, the KMZ generator is limited to 4 eclipses at a time)

still unconvinced about the whole compo culture, the open showcase TillageFX was lovely... haven't made anything on the tic80 for weeks but might dust off a geometry experiment and give it a nice palette, for the feeling of participation

i remember you did a tiny generative tartan thing that could go into it nicely :)

@stevefaeembra @lovebyteparty @ultrazool The hardest part for me was figuring out how to structure the actual submission. Looking at last year's files helped a lot!

@lovebyteparty @deater78 I'm interested in entering some machine language in the 64- and 256-byte contests, but am not quite sure what format I need to submit. (.dsk + source?) Also, will the 4-byte DOS header count against the size limit?
