🧵 A flurry of execution notices have been issued these past few weeks. It is of course horrific every time a notice is delivered to a death row prisoner and their family, but what’s especially troubling in these cases is that all these prisoners are currently party to a joint application to the court, filed even before the first execution notice was issued.

kixes,
@kixes@kopiti.am avatar

[2] The Transformative Justice Collective has so far heard of four execution notices issued since 12 April. In two of these cases, executions have been stayed: one family was contacted by the prison a day or two before the scheduled execution to say it would be put on hold after all due to ongoing proceedings.

kixes,
@kixes@kopiti.am avatar

[3] Another prisoner was also given reprieve for now, possibly because of the same application. That still leaves two prisoners at risk of imminent execution, with one hanging potentially as soon as Monday.

kixes,
@kixes@kopiti.am avatar

[4] We do not know why the state is so adamant on proceeding with executions for prisoners who are party to an ongoing application. They should have known about the application weeks ago; the notices should never have been issued. All the more so after the Court issued a stay with regard to the first execution—any further notices planned should have been withdrawn.

@kixes@kopiti.am avatar

[5] We are also aware of effort by the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) to further expedite the joint proceedings beyond timelines that are already unusually tight. This is no mundane administrative hiccup; these are human lives we’re talking about.

kixes,
@kixes@kopiti.am avatar

[6] Singapore’s bloodthirsty drug control regime continues to make a mockery of life, and the state refuses an honest reckoning with the immeasurable human cost of these cruel laws, from the families that are devastated to the torturous conditions prisoners suffer on death row.

The only way to protect the lives of the over 50 people on death row is by declaring a moratorium on the use of capital punishment in Singapore.

The Airshow begins next week, and exhibitors from will be there, showing off their munitions—the same weaponry used to kill in right now. Meanwhile, Singaporeans who organised peacefully to call for ceasefire and urge our own government to do more to get Israel to stop killing are being investigated by the police. https://www.wethecitizens.net/whats-responsible-in-the-middle-of-a-genocide/

It’s the third day of the ! For me, this means attending the annual luncheon of ’s Old Left. This year, I’ve been assigned to read out a speech by Dr Poh Soo Kai, a founding member of the People’s Action Party, back when they were still leftist, anti-colonial activists. Dr Poh was later detained during Operation Coldstore and kept behind bars, without trial, as a political prisoner for many years.

I stayed home yesterday and allowed myself a lazy day to read novels and watch k drama, and my body took it as a sign to just be tired and sleepy all day long. I guess I really needed that down time!

Have to go out today but hopefully I’ll get another day of just doing fun things before I try to wrestle my brain back to work.

Happy New Year, everyone! It's day one of the . Due to unforeseen circumstances my family is not going visiting today so I'm very tempted to (1) go back to bed, (2) read novels and (3) eat crisps while watching Hospital Playlist. I will probably do all three.

This week’s newsletter: just days before the event, the police told organisers that a public indoor event in solidarity with would be illegal because it required a police permit that the police wouldn’t be willing to issue. Tthe police claimed that the event had to do with race/religion. The venue had no choice but to cancel the event.

Still, people packed into a space in an industrial estate for a private event with speeches and protest chants.

It feels like I am saying a lot less about these days… I used to tweet all these lengthy threads on various news items and issues but these days I either can’t summon up the energy or know what exactly to say. Is it the vibe of the platform, or something else?

kixes,
@kixes@kopiti.am avatar

@skribe Not very much, really! I think the community that I had on Twitter is now kind of scattered so that also affects conversations...

kixes,
@kixes@kopiti.am avatar

@skribe Yeah… I haven’t figured out how to build back that community for my work. Actually I’m not even sure now if I need/want it, or if I will just start using social media in a different way. I’m on Threads a lot because I have a lot of fun there with the K-pop fan community, but it’s different when it comes to work stuff.

Sent out my weekly wrap on early this time, because it’s about a big case: charges of corruption, obstructing justice and obtaining valuable things as a public servant filed against the (now former) transport minister. https://www.wethecitizens.net/an-embarrassment-of-riches-emphasis-on-embarrassment/

Here is this week’s wrap!

The Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau has concluded their investigation into S Iswaran, the transport minister. The law and home affairs ministries, both under K Shanmugam, have proposed multiple significant changes to the Criminal Procedure Code.

Like, I can't read much now, but I'm SO TEMPTED to order this set of books because I loved so much

But it could be motivational to stare at the books longingly, right??

BTW what's a good place to order books in . Anyone know?

kixes,
@kixes@kopiti.am avatar

@liztai Do you use Taobao at all? It’s very dangerous because the books are pretty cheap there. Otherwise Kinokuniya actually doesn’t have a bad selection in both the Singapore and KL stores the last time I looked.

kixes,
@kixes@kopiti.am avatar

@liztai I’ve also just started getting into Chinese audio dramas 🥰

@ClaireFromClare @anuckols @bookandswordblog Thank you for sending this along. I’ll have to find out what is possible with the way our website is set up. Also most of our articles are paywalled because MR works on a subscription basis to support ourselves, so I really don’t know how much use people might get out of an RSS feed…
