Hello, I am a writer and I have trouble distinguishing between hunger and procrastination

I've been raising this past week and it has been lovely. https://kirstenhan.com/2023/11/19/raising-kittens/

Just realised I'd started writing a blog post about turning 35, put it to one side partway through, and now I can't remember what I was going to say anyway

I’ve been trying to get the word out about Mekong Review’s end-of-year subscription drive/promotion, and it’s tough. We have our newsletter, and I’m trying to do what I can with social media… Twitter used to be our most reliable platform but we’re not using it anymore (because, well).

Anyone who uses the promo code ENDOFYEAR2023 at https://mekongreview.com can get 20% off a year’s subscription to our quarterly literary magazine covering Asia.

kixes,

@korvroffe If you sign up there should be a way to stop the recurring! I think what you do is cancel the subscription, and it will still be valid for the period that you've paid for, but won't automatically renew.

I love November because it's my birthday month. You know what I also love? Discounts.

So: discounts on subscriptions to my Singapore-focused newsletter for the month of November (plus an added bonus if you also subscribe to Mekong Review, a quarterly literary magazine that I edit).

Check it out here and please share widely: https://www.wethecitizens.net/november-discounts/

Four opposition political parties in Singapore came together today to form The Coalition, a "non-formal partnership". They were quick to assure Singaporeans that they're not looking to kick the PAP out of government (that's SG politics for you), but want more "checks and balances".

https://www.wethecitizens.net/the-coalition-isnt-going-to-kick-the-pap-out-but-hopes-to-make-them-sweat-a-bit/

kixes,

@Lexpedite At this point no opposition party in Singapore really has the resources or capacity to present a serious enough challenge to the ruling party and actually kick them out of government. And the ruling party has had decades of propaganda convincing Singaporeans that if they weren't in charge things in Singapore would implode.

Mini rant - "last name" "first name" is so effing confusing. If I want to be literal, my "last name" is my given name and my "First name" is literally my family name. Sometimes I panic, like this morning, wondering if I filled that stupid field up wrongly confused & thus have to deal with beurocratic nonsense to get it right.
And this must be extra confusing for Malay or Indians who follow a patronymic naming system.

kixes,

@liztai I recently had an invoice halted because my full government name and the order in which my bank parsed my name is different, and then the finance department wouldn’t go through with it cos it wasn’t exactly the same.

Listening to VCHA’s Y.O.Universe while reading Jared Yates Sexton’s book on toxic masculinity is making my brain short-circuit with the juxtaposition.

I do not follow Tony Fernandes on LinkedIn but that post has been written about in so many articles that I now have seen topless Tony Fernandes about five times a day and I hate everyone for it

Sent out a Passion Procrastination newsletter about Love and Leashes, which is one of my favourite rom-coms ever, really: https://passionprocrastination.substack.com/p/love-and-leashes-bad-boys-ask-for

Families of prisoners on death row (past and present) delivered a petition, with over 1,700 signatures, calling for a moratorium on the death penalty to Singapore's Ministry of Home Affairs today. They also read out this statement to the press: https://transformativejusticecollective.org/2023/10/09/statement-from-families-of-prisoners-on-death-row/

This week in : Infuriating responses from NTU and NAC over a queer performance, a well-paid parliamentarian questions what a basic need is, and the stupidest question I've ever heard about a packet drink.

I wrote about Harm Reduction International’s latest report on aid money and the War on Drugs, tying it to Singapore’s own obsession with prohibition: https://www.wethecitizens.net/drugs-and-money/?ref=altering-states-newsletter

I wrote a short blog post about processing the fact that I have written a book that has actually been published and actually currently exists on actual bookstore shelves https://kirstenhan.com/2023/10/04/i-wrote-a-book/

What are the conflict of interest considerations re: news outlets carrying sponsored content from state organs they report on? I get that branded content is important for revenue but it feels off for Singapore's main broadsheet to be carrying paid content praising the police force or the courts, when these are the very state organs that we need incisive, critical reporting on, for oversight and accountability.

A screenshot from The Straits Times' website. The article is labelled as "branded content". The headline reads: "From drug-busting operations to rehabilitation: They're guardians of a drug-free Singapore". The sub-header says: "Meet the uniformed and civilian officers across the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) who have made its their lives' work to combat the scourge of drugs."

kixes,

I get how branded content can be a lifeline for some media outlets. But when you're supposedly Singapore's "paper of record", making the state organs you're supposed to be reporting on your clients seems problematic.

The government is already giving SPH $180 million a year. Running sponsored content paid for by government ministries or state organs looks like more leverage for the government to tie the media's interests to the government and the state.

@huey Why the heck is branded content paywalled... people have to subscribe to the Straits Times to read this ad article?

    kixes,

@huey Hmm it doesn't seem to be paywalled on my end, maybe that was a mistake they corrected.

There are many things I prefer about Singapore to San Francisco (food, density, transit, sun, weather), but I have to say ‘being able to have a good time for a long time without spending money’ doesn’t rank at all for Singapore. It doesn’t really exist.

*weather isn’t suitable for everyone, but I like sweating and I dislike wind and cold and I hate grey skies

Also in this regard I’m one of the few people who moved to San Francisco and finds it cheaper than where I come from

    kixes,

@skinnylatte Yeah sometimes I want to hang out outside but not spend money and I often end up not really knowing what to do, especially since I’m not particularly sporty or into hiking or sitting on the beach in this heat...

Me, surveying the overwhelming mountain of books I haven’t read: I really need to stop buying books

Also me, at my friend’s bookstore: buys a novel and pre-orders another

The situation is out of control

    kixes,

@seachanger This is true but I really do have such a ton of books that I actually do want to read but never get to because I hoard books so much faster than I can read them
