I found this way of looking at autistic and allistic communication preferences quite clear and interesting. https://youtu.be/H6Wf8Q3e6lg?si=acKu3fQaGPyEy9bf

Chimerism in developing fetuses. How we can be an amalgam of differing genes.
I have always wondered about this, feeling the pull of two opposing sets of needs and recently put it down to the adhd / autism balancing act, but who knows?

@actuallyautistic I have managed to get involved in a community for a particular game and not been asked to be a moderator in the social space, this is quite an achievement for my developing unmasked genuine grumpiness :)

Many autistic children thrive on routine and predictability, which can make vacations challenging for them. Here's a story from USA Today with tips on how to plan a trip, choose an airline that provides accommodations for autistic children, and details on what to expect from an autism-certified resort.

@kkffoo and others highlighted to us that the puzzle piece originally used to illustrate this story is an offensive analogy to some autistic people. Here is an explanation as to why. The publication has now changed the image in response to this feedback. Thank you all.

@CultureDesk I wonder why the author chose that puzzle piece heart as one of the images? Maybe she doesn't know how offensive this is to some autistic people? @actuallyautistic

@CultureDesk @actuallyautistic That's a great response, thank you!

I feel this so hard. Why can't people just be clear about what they want?
@actuallyautistic

@kkffoo@mastodon.social avatar

@dorgaldir @actuallyautistic ..and the students have a middle school teacher who can't frame a clear question.

I found this very interesting and well balanced, a lecture about 'the changing concept of autism'.

@actuallyautistic A car park that we visit regularly has a one way system marked out with painted white arrows on the road. This week I realised that I felt uncomfortable walking 'the wrong way' over the white arrow after leaving our vehicle. Has that feeling always been there and I didn't realise, or was it just a 'that day' thing? I don't know.

Bro, do you even grapple with the essential loneliness of the human condition

kkffoo,

@donni I am more in the essential over-crowdedness of the human condition camp!

@actuallyautistic do any of my autistic co-groupies have any tips for not losing weight over December / Christmas? The extra stress makes it harder to eat good portions for regular meals and my usual snack routine gets a knock too. I did manage to grab a small bowl of full fat ice-cream last night, which is not my usual supper, but seemed a reasonable compromise. Any other ideas?

kkffoo,
@kkffoo@mastodon.social avatar

@gamambel @StrassenKatze @actuallyautistic It is lovely that you are enthusiastic about your new learning, but it feels like you are still processing it all, and seeing everything through that lens.

@gamambel @StrassenKatze @actuallyautistic Ok, fair enough, I am a little lost now so I will leave it there for now.

what part of autism is crying when you kill a spider?

@actuallyautistic

kkffoo,
@kkffoo@mastodon.social avatar

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic Kill a spider, nooo! I could give a pass for poisonous ones, but our house spiders have names, and little homes. I was really sad when I found the husk of 'under the washing machine spider'.

Baking can be really good for me in terms of re-regulating myself, so long as I have enough energy. Mince pies I made this morning, photographed by my lovely daughter.

@actuallyautistic Has anyone else experienced voice loss due to a virus, and the first stages of the voice returning speaking a monotone? (when you don't usually). This is really making me wonder if my everyday voice is masked.

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic That there are other people who, as a collective, think like me.

Question. Some dogs can tell if a person has cancer, presumably by their smell. Does anyone think that some autistic people might be more sensitive to such changes in body chemistry? Not as much as a dog, but more than most other people? @actuallyautistic #ActuallyAutistic

kkffoo,
@kkffoo@mastodon.social avatar

@Susan60 @actuallyautistic I can smell when something is cooked, like the moment cookies are just right (without opening the oven door).

It is more than ok to point out anti-semitism expressed within the autism community here is unacceptable (as it would be for someone else to point out the same about racism / misogyny or any other kind of hate speech or dismissiveness that these things exist).
I also understand people feeling triggered by conflict.
This is all about what it means to create a safe space.
