Yeah, Psych today is about as credible these days as The View when it comes to psychology research.

TL;DR: the reason is that men are horndogs, and those that for some weird reason want to say “no” are pressured by the Patriarchy and/or Toxic Masculinity to say “yes.”

Did I get the gist of the article right? 🤔

And what will run the AI that replaces your GPU? GPUs of course (rebranded as “AI accelerators”). So yeah, win-win for team green.

Wot The Fsck You Say, Spotify? (lemmy.world)

Edit: A couple times I’ve said eBook while I actually meant Audiobook. I’ve learned that Spotify has a 15 hour limit per month for their free ‘included in premium’ audiobooks. However these are the two books I listened to for free, and even rounding up to 13 hours it doesn’t make sense, unless they count accidental...

I have the whole series as DRM-free MP3. Let me know if you want it.

Love how Rogers, Bell and Telus are pointing fingers at each other. AFAIK Rogers first stated that they didn’t commit to sharing the infrastructure with Bell and Telus at first, to the surprise and dismay of the TTC. Now Rogers is blaming Bell and Telus for dragging their feet… glad to see the Toronto telco market continues to be an absolute shit show. /s

According to LocalSend docs these are the ports that need to be opened: **Multicast (UDP)**Port: 53317 Address: 224.0.0.167 **HTTP (TCP)**Port: 53317 AFAIK macOS firewall is app-based, at least in the GUI. So depending on how you installed LocalSend, you may have to add it to the list of allowed apps: support.apple.com/en-ca/guide/mac-help/…/mac

You may be able to add the ports above to /etc/pf.conf manually, but AFAIK messing with pf on macOS is not recommended.

The other thing I wanted to ask is about Vallum. If you have it running on that Mac, would it not “take over” the macOS firewall?

I’m guessing this is a school and not a university? At a university students have more clout/rights, at least on paper.

In any case, getting your own machine is the way to go. You can run whatever you want on it. You could still (cautiously) use the school network, as long as you use a VPN; basically treat the school network as a “hostile” environment. That’s assuming VPN use is not against the school rules. :)

Interesting; it’s consistently not working for me. I managed to change the app icon once, but subsequent attempts keep failing. The icon changes within the app’s settings screen, however, it does not change from the previous selection when I go into the app switcher or the launcher. Killing/restarting the app from the app switcher doesn’t help either.

EDIT: the symptoms above are happening on app store version 1.10.1. I’m about to update to 1.11.0 to see if it helps.

Love this new feature!!! And yeah, I would love to see the icon selection grow.

They’re really expensive, apparently. But hey, I think moving them around to the most lucrative locations to maximize earnings for the city (assuming they actually get to collect the money), could be a nice way to help subsidize road maintenance or TTC costs.

I was thinking the same thing. Either this person didn’t replace their tires in a couple of decades or does insane acceleration/turns/burnouts/stunts.

Lots of Firefox fanboys on here I see…

krnl386,

Cloudflare sells domains at cost. So yes, cheaper than any other registrar (including NameCheap and Porkbun), except maybe those who sell domains at a loss as a promo to rope you in and then kill you on the renewals.

Integration into their stack is a nice side effect, but really inconsequential. You can have your domains registered with any registrar and have your DNS hosted by any DNS hosting provider. Heck, you can run your own DNS servers if you want to.

FYI: ProtonPass on Mac/Safari (Apple Silicon) German

protonpass is available for a few weeks now and i really enjoy using it on my mobile devices and on firefox. there is no "official" app for mac and desktop safari yet (proton claims that they have to heavily rewrite the extension to make it work with safari) so i installed the ipad version on my m1 mini and it works - in a way....

Back then emails were limited to 2MB. Nowadays an average Office document is that size and email size limits have grown 10-100x.

Orion browser for macOS and iOS/iPadOS (browser.kagi.com)

I’ve been testing the Orion browser for macOS and iOS/iPasOS for a few days. It’s WebKit-based, and Apple OS exclusive. First impressions are positive, although I haven’t put it through its paces (check multi-device iCloud settings sync, push tabs to its limits, dig into exactly how it protects privacy by syncing through...

They implement profile syncing (bookmarks, cookies, history, etc) using blockchain. AFAIK the data is encrypted with your private key which is derived from a mnemonic phrase, so it’s probably ZK.

Ditto. I’ve been using the Voyager PWA and Memmy, and in terms of features and stability, I’d have to admit that Thunder has overtaken both.

corytheboyd, to selfhosted
corytheboyd avatar

I’m looking for a self hosted solution to this problem:

I want to create a full text search index from a collection of PDF manuals (text, not images, I don’t care about OCR here). There is a UI to search for text matches in documents, and clicking a search hit opens the PDF scrolled to where the search hit is (bonus points if the search hit is hilighted)

krnl386,
@krnl386@lemmy.ca avatar

I haven’t used any of these, but I wonder if any of the self-hosted open source document management platforms would serve your purpose? Something like PaperMerge or similar?

krnl386,
@krnl386@lemmy.ca avatar

Check out vger.app ; it’s a PWA so it’s “installable” to the launcher.
