lemmyreader,

I think I saw that Proton said in 2020 that the Proton Mail app would come to F-Droid. Sadly I cannot find that information any more. I thought about deleting my Proton mail account today but before doing so ask here about the state of a possible F-Droid app. Yes, I could ask the Proton people, and could also ask the F-Droid forum people but Lemmy feels most comfortable right now.

lemmyreader,

Thanks. But that is probably the Proton mail app that Izzy downloaded from Proton. Years ago Tutanota made changes to their app to DeGoogle it, and then F-Droid could include it. I’m a kind of DeGoogle person trying to avoid Google as much as possible and that is the reason I am asking when the Proton Mail app will be in the main F-Droid repo.

lemmyreader,

XMPP

lemmyreader,

🙂

lemmyreader,

You’re going off-topic from the OP question :-) But to answer your new question : I do not trust Matrix enough when it comes to privacy. I know that this link is old but still. disroot.org/en/blog/matrix-closure

Then again I do not trust Signal that much either but sometimes compromises need to be made to get things done. With XMPP the end user can host their own server if they wish to, without meta data going to a centralized point. And video calls via XMPP and Conversations were a pleasure to use when I used it during the Covid-19 pandemic.

lemmyreader,

Suggestion :

  • Use Tails like it was meant to be : from a USB stick only, with persistent storage.
  • Install Fedora on your computer.
  • Use Ventoy one time as live Linux for installation start help and then stored safely in the back of your closet. For a beginning Linux user it makes sense to avoid dual-boot configurations. Hope it works out fine!
lemmyreader,

So I assumed the SSD was internal but it is external and there is also a Windows installation involved (Apologies for not reading your long post slowly and carefully). I have a whole bunch of USB sticks here. One has Ventoy with several Linux iso files on them. A few others are for BSD or something else. I’d like to suggest once again to buy another small USB stick and use Tails on that to learn some more Linux while everything else is still safe. Easy peasy and no rocket science involved 🙂 Then later figure out the Windows/Fedora dual boot.

Are you running a Tor Relay?

Hiya, so been on the lookout for different services that I could help host for others to benefit from. I think TOR is a great project, and I’d like to contribute. So been thinking about hosting a TOR relay lately, and wondering how people’s experience is with running one? Please correct me if I’m wrong - but as far as I...

😄 About time to have an exclusive SystemD O.S. so that these new users understand not to fiddle with PID Eins /s /j

lemmyreader,

You know that Linux has protection against rm -rf / since a few years ?

Guess it’s a sign that Linus got milder on the way, growing old :-) And the terrible BOFH joke of this grew old and boring as well. Gotta take care about new Linux users.

lemmyreader,

😄

lemmyreader,

🙂 👍

lemmyreader,

Boot with previous kernel ? If fail, boot from Linux live, connect, mount, make backups, and try to fix.

When / why / how did "I hope you are well" become a standard email intro?

Practically every email I’ve received in maybe the past year has started with “I hope you are well”. I even had an LLM draft a placeholder email for me and it started with the same thing. This has not always been the case and it’s strange to me that everyone I interact with begins their emails with this line. Frankly,...

lemmyreader,

After some trepidation I’ll confess that I find these “hope you are well” also annoying though it depends who the sender is. What I find more annoying are the “OK, boomer” comments on the Internet. I mean what can you say after such a reply ?

lemmyreader,

🙂 Thank you for softening the pain.

lemmyreader,

That’s quite a statement but I mostly agree with it.

lemmyreader,

Spectre and Meltdown are an interesting example where I’ve heard from at least one distinguished professor that “everyone” believed branch prediction design/algorithms were essentially done.

Interesting to hear this.

Was it adequately assessed from a security POV? Clearly not, but was it assessed from a security POV in general? I have no idea, but it would be nice as a tech enthusiast and software guy to see the other side of the fence take these things seriously in a more public way, in particular when it comes to assessing old hardware for new attack vectors.

Right.

lemmyreader,

This sounds over the top to me.

I don’t care if I have support from others or not. I’m already used to never having my voice heard or being rejected, it makes no difference.

I see no problems with this part of the previous comment. It can be fine to live like a hermit or a fool on the hill. The Buddha gave up everything and didn’t care what others said.

Google fires 28 workers for protesting $1.2 billion Israel contract (www.nbcnews.com)

“Google issued a stern warning to its employees, with the company’s vice president of global security, Chris Rackow, saying, “If you’re one of the few who are tempted to think we’re going to overlook conduct that violates our policies, think again,” according to an internal memo obtained by CNBC.”

lemmyreader,

Yes, maybe all those commenters could be simply called self-censored vendor locked in. This is also not the first time Google has been firing critical voices, it is quite frankly tempting to say “it happens all the time”.
