lemmyreader,

Found out about the xz one on Lemmy. Years ago I was briefly subscribed to Bugtraq but that was too much. Now Iโ€™m subscribed to a few OS specific security announcement mailing lists.

lemmyreader,

We live in severe crises time sadly ๐Ÿ˜’ Currently reading a book by Gabor Matรฉ about addiction and drug addicts, including workaholics and people addicted to shopping . It mentions how stress can deprive us from good sleep. Sleep is very important. On the other hand my own experience is that too much sleep can be as bad as too little sleep. What gives me energy is staying away from bad food and drinks and be very conscious about what to consume. Things that gets me going on : music, hobbies and work. Of course your mileage may vary. For some medicines can help, for others social interaction is important. Take care!

lemmyreader,

Yay for the mentioned Lemmy compatibility.

Lasse Collin, the other xz maintainer, has acknowledged the backdoor (tukaani.org)

They havenโ€™t particularly made a comment on the situation so much as acknowledged itโ€™s happening. They seem to be going with the story that they had nothing to do with it and this is news to them. Hope to hear more from them soon so we can find out more about the situation, how and why this happened, etc....

lemmyreader,

Brother laser is indeed the way to go for black and white printing. Else have a look at Epson.

p.s. HP = evil avoid HP if you can.

lemmyreader,

Ubuntu Snap Store looked messy years ago. Why let people upload half baked software and experiments, which get no updates, but add to search engine results ? snapcraft.io/search?q=testWeโ€™ve found 815 snaps

lemmyreader,

Why DistroWatch ? Are Linux news sites and Linux download sites also blocked ?

lemmyreader,

Thanks for the cbonsai suggestion ๐Ÿ˜€

lemmyreader,

Common side effects of using Manjaro Linux are :

spoiler___ I use Arch btw

lemmyreader,

t y for sharing.

The problem is in upstream and has only entered Debian Sid/unstable. Does this mean that for example bleeding edge Arch (btw) sshd users are compromised already ?

lemmyreader,

Reading the comments here news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39865810 it appears that libarchive may be tainted as well.

lemmyreader,

Thanks a bunch.

lemmyreader,

The person who found the backdoor : mastodon.social/โ€ฆ/112180083704606941

lemmyreader,

Greedy, yes. But also lots of people believe since long ago that some things on the Internet should be โ€œat no monetary costโ€ (gratis) It should become common for people to donate money for some things even if it is very little.

lemmyreader,

Interesting idea.

lemmyreader,

Why the CAPS ? Many years ago there were a zillion freeware and shareware clipboard applications for Windows. Why ? Because people who knew a little bit of programming wanted to make some money. Nowadays open source developers create and share applications simply because they can. I say that getting software for free made by unpaid developers should get a little bit of respect rather than rage. Glad to see the OP is keeping their cool.

lemmyreader,

Fair enough. It was just the caps and the wtf rage that made me comment. Regarding this note taking app, I have the feeling that the Cherrytree note app has been around since years, so I was curious to see what the OP wanted to add as extra features compared to Cherrytree, which is explained in the treedome Codeberg repository. ๐Ÿ‘‹

Headless VNC on Mint

I installed x11vnc on Mint and it works fine as long as I have a monitor plugged into the server. I want to run the server without a monitor though. That apparently doesnโ€™t work with Cinnamon. I already bought a dummy plug to simulate a monitor but that seems clunky. Is there a better way? Iโ€™m also open to using a different...

lemmyreader,

What problems do you have ? From the top of my head it is something like this :

  • Install the tigervnc-standalone-server deb package on your server
  • ssh in your server as your user and type : vncpasswd
  • Continue and type : vncserver
  • On your client connect via a vnc viewer software

This wiki.archlinux.org/title/TigerVNC doesnโ€™t read like an easy howto but could be useful.
