Like many photographers around the world, I went on a last-ditch aurora chase on the weekend of 11 May. The huge CMEs left us with hopes of a second night of Southern Lights at low latitudes

Sadly, it was not to be. But I was determined to not come away from the adventure empty handed, and got this nice shot of the Milky Way.

Lake George, NSW.

OK, so you know the so-called "source code leak" from Rabbit for the last week? It wasn't a real leak, but what it showed was different than what I was expecting. So Rabbit Hole, the way you configure your R1 -- it only works on desktops, which I thought was rather odd. And then I went to manage my connection and I figured out why. This whole thing is a fucking VNC session in the web browser served as if it is a modal login

@film_girl This is hilarious, but I can't say I'm terribly surprised. There are so many ways that you could possibly "interact" with an app/website and have it not use an API

When you launch a new project these days that needs direct support in the post-Twitter era, all you need to do is promote it on Mastodon
and Bluesky
Also LinkedIn…and Instagram. Probably set up a Facebook account just so that other people can spread it…
All the Discord servers you're on where it's ok to self-promote…
and…
on Twitter.
Don’t forget to have a custom website for the project and update your blog.

@glennf I was listening to the discussion on TWiT, and all I could think was "I don't do any of this. I wonder how many regular people do?"

@glennf I guess what I’m getting at is listening to several power users discussing the way they use social media was completely alien to a lightweight like me, with more follows than followers

I spent more than 25 years in tech. If you asked me for advice today, I’d open with a warning: don’t let a corporate job, no matter how great, become your whole identity.

My view isn’t rooted in resentment or anti-capitalism. I am immensely grateful for my career, I’ve always taken pride in my work, and I strived to do it well. My point is different: losing an argument in the office shouldn’t feel like an attack on your entire self.

The allure of getting lost in work comes in part from the mythos of Big Tech: the idea that we’re changing the world every day, even if it the bulk of corporate life is just grind. The grind is important but it has no end; in ten years, nobody will remember or care about the all-nighters we put in to refactor some code, flesh out a policy, or nail an OKR.

It doesn’t help that many tech companies recruit fresh out of college and ask people to move hundreds or thousands of miles. This severs our social connections and forces us to rebuild them around the workplace. When doing so, it can be difficult to draw clear lines.

I’m not arguing for nihilism or mediocrity. But by the end of the day, your corporate employer is not your family. The pastel-colored interiors, the board games, the lounge chairs conceal an uncomfortable truth: the company will not hesitate to fire you if you bring the wrong “whole self” to work, if they lose interest in your project, or if they need to send a specific message in the quarterly report. You might have a caring manager or wonderful colleagues, but your work identity is just a row in someone else's spreadsheet.

My advice is simple. Be ambitious, but find ways to disconnect every now and then. Save some of that true passion for hobbies, family, and friends.

@lcamtuf I actually stopped answering "What do you do" with my job title, and I now tell people that I'm a photographer.

Yes, I work in big tech. Yes, I'm proud of my work.

Unless you're in the biz, though, I think you'll be far more interested in my travel and landscape photos, and my thoughts on modern popular media.

I’m finally giving the Rodecaster Duo a go and it’s… amazing.

lorewanderer,
@lorewanderer@mastodon.au avatar

@EposVox I've been casting around for something to replace my GoXLR. Given the RodeCasters now have sub-mixes, do you think it's a contender?

Photographers: How do you organize your best photos in lightroom? Store the exports somewhere, dedicated "portfolio" collection?

lorewanderer,
@lorewanderer@mastodon.au avatar

@EposVox if I like a photo a lot, I will do a high quality TIFF export and put it somewhere safe, separate from the Lightroom catalog

Is homework beneficial for elementary school kids? Academic Etta Kralovec says it may actually be harmful, taking away from leisure time, creating tension between parents and children, and disadvantaging kids who don't have ideal setups for working at home. For The Walrus, Anne Thériault looked into how schools are now, and if change may be on the horizon. What's your opinion on homework for younger kids?
