I realized what it is about the eclipse image set that makes it so challenging to find and use tools to align them all.

In many cases with astro images, the goal is stacking, i.e., aligning a feature of interest across multiple images where that feature is positioned arbitrarily. In effect, you're "solving" for a single, static variable, and assuming anything that doesn't correlate with it is noise and can be safely eliminated.

With an eclipse, there are two variables that interact with each other: Sol and Luna. There are two features in the images that are dynamically coinciding to make an eclipse, and to properly process the images one must keep track of both objects and their relative positions.

Work in progress on everyone's favorite galaxy pair (need to catch more photons as I still have way too much noise in the image).

A longer focal length telescope would be helpful with this, I'm really pushing my smol telescope a bit too far with this target.

My former colleague Asa Dotzler tried asking generative AI models to create pictures of people writing, playing an instrument or playing tennis with their left hand and it went exactly as you would imagine it to go.

FINALLY got some clear skies!

I managed to get some images of comet 12P/Pons-Brooks, which I didn't even know about until I saw it in the Tonight's Best list in ASIair.

Currently capturing images of M81 and M82.

Here's the Live stack of the comet, and the galaxies. The fully processed images are incoming whenever I can figure out how to properly stack comet images lol

    I'm proudly a Luddite when it comes to AI technology. We are only just starting to see the affects of things like ChatGPT, but it's already clear the this technology will only enhance and expand inequity and inequality of wealth and power for marginal benefits.

    AI will:

    • Obfuscate the contributions of individuals, making it trivial to reduce compensation.
    • Be used to exploit entire classes of labor with the threat of replacement by AI.
    • Degrade the working conditions of any job that can't be entirely replaced by AI (increased work load, reduced compensation, increased job insecurity and competition).
    • Degrade the quality of products and services.
    • Dramatically increase energy and resource consumption.
    • Stymie artistic and cultural progress.

    I remain unconvinced that there is ANY meaningful benefit to using AI tech in anything but very niche technical domains.

    Or to put it another way, I think the cost to widespread adoption of this technology far exceeds any benefits. It's a distraction, an indulgence, and right at a moment when cannot afford it. We have real problems to solve, and this shit only gets in the way.

    It's been two weeks without my meds and I'm basically back to being just as dysfunctional and useless as I was before I started taking it. Seems like it actually does do something for me that caffeine cannot replace.

    Turns out I'm not the drug addict the DEA assumes I am by default. What a surprise.

    Turns out I have a real medical condition that amphetamines help treat, instead of being a morally corrupt and loafish sinner, only concerned with getting high instead of being a "productive member of society."

    That paternalistic (and in many cases, racist) attitude needs to die in a fire as soon as possible.
