This week I have been deeply surrounded by death, decay, heartbreak, and unraveling relationships. Most of it isn't mine directly, but I love my friends deeply and feel things a lot.

@hazelweakly I was so happy the time I was driving you and @renice to dinner and I was complaining about some NixOS stuff and you explained to me why the error messages from the Nix interpreter suck.

@hazelweakly It might be silly to some, but I ordered a new planner this week that I can't wait to come in. It fits my current vibe more and I got stencils and things and finally being organized in my life and looking forward to planning has been a huge source of joy and feeling in control of my life and happy to participate in it finally.
Doing the planner stuff always makes me so happy and much more comfortable, even if I have to do it digitally personally. I can't wait to see the stencils and everything :ablobfoxbongo:
@hazelweakly This is a slightly weird one; but in the last week I discovered IronMouse - via an early stream where she was fundraising for “a new work environment”. A bed. She’s bedridden. Her haltingly explaining it then blowing through the very low goal in minutes… I cried. I then discovered her vids with Connor, and the Vshojo stuff. The genuine friendship, and triumph over circumstances, has been a heartwarming thing for me this week. A reminder that good is happening out there.
@hazelweakly It’s odd - discovering “Vtubers” has been an uplifting thing for me. Both because of the content itself - and because I realised this is just old-school chat rooms but with 2020’s tech. It feels like the old internet. The real one, which was just places full of people being themselves. The one I fell in love with and made me become a web developer. It’s people, and self-organising groups who are largely very positive and inclusive. I needed that.
Something this week that made me feel good about being alive: I learned a bunch about how to design objects for 3D printing. In a period of post-job recovery, it’s been nice to learn something purely for the sake of learning it.
I've been helping some people on my team and people I know recover from burnout over the last quarter or two, and it takes so long, but feeling those moments of joy and creative energy again are beyond worth it. I wish you the best on that journey ❤️
@hazelweakly Thanks for coming by the booth I staffed at Build! I'd only heard tales of some intense technical work as Mastodon instances were scaling up and was pleased as punch to meet one of the mages behind it.

@hazelweakly Just today I saw the dude behind one of my favorite accounts here, @lowqualityfacts , holding his cat while wearing a shirt with a photo of his cat peeking out of the pocket.
Seeing him grinning helped remind me that everyone here is just a person, not some shitty shill or drone account. It made me feel cozy and at home, and I hope you feel a little more comfy right now too.

We don't know each other, but here's a happy thing for me:
My wife and I love doing jigsaw puzzles and both our daughters will participate a little but they aren't super into puzzles usually. Our younger daughter used her saved up birthday and Christmas money to buy herself a really neat* puzzle and she's been working on daily this week.
It is a double-sided puzzle of Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater house. One side is a photo of the house and the other is the blueprints.
@roytoo oh I love that! My ex loves puzzles and I got her and my kid a little puzzle that they could do together for Christmas and they loved it! It's so great when kids pick up your hobbies a little bit. Not that we encourage it too much ofc. Just a lil bit 😇
@hazelweakly my wife and I had some of the most fun time playing Baldur's Gate 3 together. We rarely find games we can play together in genres we like. We also have a young toddler and a newborn. So gaming time has been minimal.
We found a way to play this week and it's the most fun we have had in a long time that wasn't kids related.
And my oldest is now forming complete complex sentences and watching the marvel of a little potato lump turning into a human is such a marvel to watch for us.
@hazelweakly on Wednesday, my son, who is four, came home from school. He marched into my office and proudly held up the coloring sheet that he had colored in. And then a little while later he came back in to ask me to paint with him. So I did, and we sat on the floor and painted water colors for 10 minutes before I went back to work.
@hazelweakly I enjoy reading your posts and in particular recently, I really enjoyed the flow state discussion with Cat.
Also: tonight at home, my partner and I worked on a big prop cardboard cake for a sweet sixteen party coming up (16 years since coming out, that is). It has been super fun to work on. I think I hear glitter spray paint being used in the basement as I type. :)
@hazelweakly In the "happy to be alive" department, it always feels good to work in the garden together with my partner, whether we get a little done or a lot. This time it was clearing frost-withered leaves and patching a canvas table cover before the rains came.
@jmeowmeow doing good work together with someone I love is legitimately such a wonderful thing. I love days like that and I'm so glad you get to share something fulfilling like that with your partner 🥰
@hazelweakly It's always such a good reminder that we like doing things together, and that work neither of us enjoys alone is always good done together.
For yard work, she has the eyes for what matters most, and I am very happy not to be guessing. However much gets done is progress and success for both of us.
@hazelweakly Years ago, when my daughter was much smaller than she is today, we went to the park near our house to go sledding. Long story short, I wound up being the sled: I lay down on the toboggan, she sat on top of me, and down the hill we went, over and over, because steering daddy was the best game ever.
@hazelweakly I don't really know you, so I'll just give you some tidbits of happiness from my week.
-my new sewing machine
-figuring out a use for some seaglass someone gave me in a trade several years ago
-not having to go anywhere today while it snowed and snowed
