The focus on apps, not games, in the Vision Pro is just as much about where they want to go — if Apple does bring this experience to seamless traditional augmented reality glasses down the road, it's not going to support those fully-immersive scenarios like VR gaming or movie watching in the mountains. You won't have chunky lenses with an amazing FOV, or a light shield. The whole visionOS experience will need to be distilled down to its essence — floating apps, hand tracking, and copious sensors

@stroughtonsmith I've been watching a bunch of Zach Freedman's videos lately. I think you're right, BUT after seeing what he sees in his, and how he uses it, i think there's also a very strong argument for what apple's presented (in terms of what you see) being very useful and practical.

Just stumbled across README-AI Github Repo.

it creates a short paragraph summarizing every file(?) in your repo and generates a nice table of them that you can use as a Readme.

obviously a custom readme is better, BUT imagine all those libraries you end up having to look into that only have a readme that's essentially "the foo lib. it does something."

Even if you've got a great custom readme, this could be a great supplement.

watchOS has got to version 10 without third-party watch faces, and I'm so done. My watch doesn't boot anymore and I have no plans to replace it. So many great teams working on great features for the platform, but all for nought when I can’t pick a face I enjoy; I just tune out completely for the watch section of every keynote. There's no ‘i’ in Apple Watch — it's Apple’s watch, not mine

@nicholashead @stroughtonsmith I keep thinking about the pebble. I get why it failed, but i really REALLY want someone to try again and apply the lessons learned.

It's not like the apple watch ever shows me up to date complications anyway. Temp is frequently 20°F off of actual because data is so old.

Nikki Haley said the most important issue facing teenage girls is unfair competition from transgirl athletes.

An estimated ONE MILLION high school girls have been raped based on a 2021 (NBC) report. In 2021, 2590 children under 18 were murdered by guns (Pew). Before age 18, 3.5 Million girls have been stalked. One in 10 girls is a victim of dating violence.(Childrens Hosp of Phila).

Meanwhile, (Apr 21, 2023) Newsweek reports 15 high school transathletes competed in high school sports, of those 15, only THREE are girls.

MAGA will exaggerate and lie about victimization to justify hate and bigotry. Nazis did this, too. It's not harmless.

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@Paulos_the_fog @pattykimura Paul, you've utterly failed to actually learn about the issue. Trans girls are well within the normal range of human variation for genetically XX women. You also failed to consider that even if you were right, hormones reduce muscle mass, which means they'd be competing at a disadvantage because less muscle but more bone weight.

to logically defend your argument you'd need to also exclude CIS women who were atypically big/strong from competition.

Via @ianbetteridge, people seem to forget that there are four pronoun forms, not three, and they are not consistent between number/person/gender:

  • subjective
  • objective
  • possessive adjective
  • possessive pronoun

I/me/my/mine
We/us/our/ours
You/you/your/yours
She/her/her/hers
He/him/his/his
They/them/their/theirs

This new contact form is missing the adjective form.

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@jsit don't forget that english is more limited than some languages when it comes to pronoun forms.

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@jsit Apparently Spanish has 9 pronoun forms:

https://www.fluentu.com/blog/spanish/spanish-pronouns/

i assume they’ve got spanish support in ios17

i found a controller named <CoName>RuportController

I thought it was a typo.

Nope.

> Ruby Reports (Ruport) is an extensible reporting system.

Dear developers. Please stop.

I get why you come up with things like this, and it is kinda humorous, BUT you've gotta think about what it looks like in other codebases.

why would any normal person NOT think that was a typo if they hadn't used Ruport before?

@rtn @powersource wait... neocities is toxic tone or i was?

neocities never seemed particularly toxic.

And there was nothing toxic or negative in my statement. Anything toxic was inserted by the reader.

I simply conveyed that i didn't know how to address the statement because it was ambiguous. Please read the words actually written without inserting your own hidden meanings. Having to deal with other people's BS toxic insertions and assumptions makes life miserable for us autistic folks.

    Keynote is over and i'm honestly unsure how to feel.

    looks amazing, and really looks like something new.

    • i think the price is a terrible choice that will seriously hamper adoption (should have taken a hit on it)
    • I don't know how they expect anyone to develop great immersive experiences if they have to wait a year. Do you... Use a oculus as a test device?
    • They're going to get ripped to shreds on the creepy time-lagged eyes & the uncanny valley avatar.

    Why has the GOP targeted transgender people? There’s not a shred of evidence that trans people are threats to anyone. All they want is to live peacefully as their true selves.

    But targeting trans people is a way to stir up the base, stoking fear and hatred. It's that simple.

    masukomi,
    @masukomi@connectified.com avatar

    @rbreich more practically, it worked for the nazis, and they're literally replicating the steps the nazis used to rise to power.

    Demonizing minority groups who can't fight back, and combining that with "moral outrage" is a key part of that strategy.

    I’m seeing people smack-talk Apple’s newly-announced Journal, and a lot of gratitude-related jokes.
    Journal has the possibility to be an amazing accessibility tool. Pulling in the day’s data without having to remember it all - that’s a big deal for some with cognitive disabilities, including brain fog. I hope developers jump on the Suggestions API.

    masukomi,

    Why should I switch to ZSH from BASH on MacOS?

    Why not?

    masukomi,
    @masukomi@connectified.com avatar

    @funkatron

    ZSH because future Macs will come with a current version and you won’t have to custom install anything.

    HOWEVER if you are going to switch but not particularly compelled to stick with bash-like things, my vote it’s for Fish Shell

    literally every week i receive 1-2 phishing attempts by our system that tries to teach users to not click on bad things.

    The result is that i not only never trust ANY emails from ANY of the tools we use but i ALSO never read them.

    #Ruby geeks As i sat down to work this morning, preparing to give my daily standup, i switch #devgood to look at "Work" content and 💥

    after much investigation i discovered that re-using a Pygments renderer in Redcarpet is dangerous and will eventually cause something in the underlying c libraries to go 💥 and take down your app. You can not catch this exception.

    the 💥 does NOT seem to be related to the content of the thing you're rendering.

    Solved with doing this every time:

    masukomi,
    @masukomi@connectified.com avatar

    my unverified theory is that some prior rendering set up some bad state in the c lib's memory, which didn't make it go 💥 but DID make it so that some future rendering, or maybe combination of renderings, would cause it to eventually go 💥

    I don't have enough details to file a bug.

    masukomi,
    @masukomi@connectified.com avatar

    @randomgeek yup. i suspect everyone hitting this eventually figures this out, works around it, and doesn't bother to figure out the underlying bug because we've got better things to be working on. ;)

    1.0 has been announced
    Ferret is a proxy that sits between your drivers & a db converting mongo queries into postgres SQL and using PG for the persistence.

    https://www.ferretdb.io/

    I am finding myself at a complete loss as to any practical reason why someone would want to use this. The ONLY case i can make for it is that it satisfies people who are zealous about open source licenses and aren't happy with Mongo's.

    What am i missing?

    masukomi,
    @masukomi@connectified.com avatar

    @hobs Ferret would make SO much more sense if they'd just pitch it that way, but they're pitching it as "hey this is a great choice to develop apps with" and... I just don't buy that.

    as a very focused niche "help me escape mongo with minimal work" tool it looks incredibly valuable.

    Just because software is free doesn’t mean you shouldn’t support it financially if you can. Until we achieve utopia, money still powers life.

    Go find an open source project you like and use a lot and donate to it, if you have the means.

    masukomi,
    @masukomi@connectified.com avatar

    @cda if you don't have the $ means, donate time. Make detailed bug reports that get to the root of the problem. Add clarification to documentation. Contribute fixes and features if you can. Every little bit helps. Saving the devs time is, in many cases, better than $.
