Big downside of the new Ozlo sleep wireless earbuds (which were spun off the Bose sleep headphones) is that the iOS app eats battery with background processing for no apparent reason. My Battery app says it user 20% of battery in a day. Likely just needs more optimization?

The hardware is great though, and doesn’t need the app once paired with the phone. Two nights now, I’ve used them, and they very comfortable. Most importantly, they actually get quiet — other sleep headphones are too loud.

@mathiasx@mastodon.xyz avatar

@neurovagrant still the first week, and I don’t have it play audio all night long. Might want to find someone who has reviewed them over a longer time period to see how the battery holds up — I think some of the Kickstarter backers have had them for a month or so now.

@rasterweb have you ever used lace as a spray paint stencil? Just curious, have a project where I might try it.

mathiasx,
@mathiasx@mastodon.xyz avatar

@grimmy @rasterweb laser cutter stencils might work better in this case too just because I wouldn’t know how much paint to spray to get the desired effect until I did it, and layers of paint would make lace more opaque each time.

mathiasx,
@mathiasx@mastodon.xyz avatar

@grimmy @rasterweb as an example of the kind of effect I was looking at for a guitar finish: https://www.instagram.com/reel/C0NAUptye0W/

mathiasx,
@mathiasx@mastodon.xyz avatar

@rasterweb @grimmy have you ever done a rigid stencil with posts to stand off the surface to be stenciled, so that it gets a little “overspray” through the stencil, making it a bit fuzzy?

I don’t have an example of this, but I know some people do the opposite with a burst finish where a shape held up off the body blocks the spray in the middle and causes that gradient past the edge https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nKNbdryilOY/Wgi-IUocp7I/AAAAAAAAGSs/bkYkoJXN_FMZyDgJrk0nqCDoyb_EV1xPwCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/20170716_222615.jpg

mathiasx,
@mathiasx@mastodon.xyz avatar

@rasterweb @grimmy very cool! I’m wondering if I could 3D print something upside down on the printer, that raises a stencil off the guitar body a bit to get fuzzy gradients. I would keep the pattern simple, like diamonds or retro-Formica-boomerangs. https://i.pinimg.com/originals/8a/a7/85/8aa78500094dc6f2bed5fc4dc006de85.jpg

mathiasx,
@mathiasx@mastodon.xyz avatar

@rasterweb @grimmy I’m guessing it only needs a little gap to get fuzzy edges that are nice. Otherwise I’ll have to worry too much about angles and not spraying too much.

mathiasx,
@mathiasx@mastodon.xyz avatar

@rasterweb @grimmy I’ll do some tests with cardboard as well — thanks for that idea! Before I go down the path of modeling a stencil in OpenSCAD or (haven’t learned it yet!) Fusion360

#permacomputing aesthetics paper, as discussed at @iffybooks Permacomputing meeting today: https://limits.pubpub.org/pub/6loh1eqi/release/1 (Choose the "Download -> <format>" dropdown to get the whole paper there.)

As discussed on hashtag in the last few weeks, but from the other direction: What are the aesthetics of permacomputing as art? Do constraints matter / make it? Is it just nostalgia? Does using more-powerful computers to create promote the extraction/exploitation/wastefulness of their creation? Mulling over.

I don’t know why I keep letting myself get pulled into replying to mostly-beginners on the subreddit, but a lot of people there aren’t patient enough and I am trying to explain things in a non-condescending and thorough way — what I wish other people had done for me when I was starting out. My replies must sometimes help, because I get up votes. Still, I’m tempted to fully block Reddit on my phone.

Re-reading Jeff Tweedy’s How to Write One Song https://openlibrary.org/books/OL30180106M/How_to_Write_One_Song lately, and not only is it fun to hear from one of the musicians that has been in my life for a long time, but I kept coming back to the several times he said if he wrote a song, it was important that he “wasn’t hurting anybody.” And certainly music could be used to hurt. But I think it’s far more important to use it to heal, help others, or share. He’s clearly thought about this and it’s one of his ethical choices in life.

Got in a 5.2 mile ride this morning, including going all the way to Appleton Avenue which is probably a good place to get killed...

mathiasx,

@rasterweb not worth it. Maybe time to explore Locust or Chambers towards Mount Mary, so you can hop on the Oak Leaf on the Parkway?

mathiasx,
@mathiasx@mastodon.xyz avatar

@rasterweb the “transit” maps are terrible for knowing exactly where the Oak Leaf is. I go off google maps and figuring it out based on the actual signs as I pass them.

mathiasx,
@mathiasx@mastodon.xyz avatar

@rasterweb ah that isn’t the old map — at least that says whether it is a path or on the street!

This is the old bad map that I was thinking of: https://county.milwaukee.gov/County-Files/Parks-Department/Photo-Gallery/Explore/Trails/2021-OLT-parksexplorer18x241.pdf

An adult friend of mine posted about a web site he used to use in grade school and now I am dead. (Because I am so fecking old of course!)

@grimmy @rasterweb I printed a Pastamatic spooler to refill spools. Other brands are more reasonable but I’ve noticed the generic filament profiles are slower than Bambi brand filament profiles. YMMV.

(Also I recommend printing the Pastamatic in PETG. I started with PLA and reprinted all the gears and axles in PETG, then epoxied the PLA frame together.)

The Interactive Map (or just plain Google maps) is better than their subway-style map since you really have to know where things are to use the subway-style abstracted map.
