aesthetics paper, as discussed at @iffybooks Permacomputing meeting today: https://limits.pubpub.org/pub/6loh1eqi/release/1 (Choose the "Download -> <format>" dropdown to get the whole paper there.)

As discussed on hashtag in the last few weeks, but from the other direction: What are the aesthetics of permacomputing as art? Do constraints matter / make it? Is it just nostalgia? Does using more-powerful computers to create promote the extraction/exploitation/wastefulness of their creation? Mulling over.

The most important part of a practice space is that the chair must be squeaky. I don’t know why; I don’t make the rules. That’s just the way it is.

Re-reading Jeff Tweedy’s How to Write One Song https://openlibrary.org/books/OL30180106M/How_to_Write_One_Song lately, and not only is it fun to hear from one of the musicians that has been in my life for a long time, but I kept coming back to the several times he said if he wrote a song, it was important that he “wasn’t hurting anybody.” And certainly music could be used to hurt. But I think it’s far more important to use it to heal, help others, or share. He’s clearly thought about this and it’s one of his ethical choices in life.

I don’t know why I keep letting myself get pulled into replying to mostly-beginners on the subreddit, but a lot of people there aren’t patient enough and I am trying to explain things in a non-condescending and thorough way — what I wish other people had done for me when I was starting out. My replies must sometimes help, because I get up votes. Still, I’m tempted to fully block Reddit on my phone.

Got in a 5.2 mile ride this morning, including going all the way to Appleton Avenue which is probably a good place to get killed...

mathiasx,
@mathiasx@mastodon.xyz avatar

@rasterweb not worth it. Maybe time to explore Locust or Chambers towards Mount Mary, so you can hop on the Oak Leaf on the Parkway?

mathiasx,
@mathiasx@mastodon.xyz avatar

@rasterweb the “transit” maps are terrible for knowing exactly where the Oak Leaf is. I go off google maps and figuring it out based on the actual signs as I pass them.

mathiasx,
@mathiasx@mastodon.xyz avatar

@rasterweb ah that isn’t the old map — at least that says whether it is a path or on the street!

This is the old bad map that I was thinking of: https://county.milwaukee.gov/County-Files/Parks-Department/Photo-Gallery/Explore/Trails/2021-OLT-parksexplorer18x241.pdf

An adult friend of mine posted about a web site he used to use in grade school and now I am dead. (Because I am so fecking old of course!)

mathiasx,
@mathiasx@mastodon.xyz avatar

@rasterweb now I’m curious which site it was.

All sorts of reminders make me feel old lately.

I got out before 7am today so I was able to do 6 miles. I tried staying on just the east side of the cemetery this time.

@mathiasx@mastodon.xyz avatar

@rasterweb I need to start getting outside again on my bike! Thanks for the reminder.
Maybe we can find a morning to ride together some time.

Is anyone running Kitsune as a single user fediverse server? It looks neat but I can’t find a single screenshot of what kind of interface it provides or what a hosted microblog on it looks like.

@grimmy @rasterweb I printed a Pastamatic spooler to refill spools. Other brands are more reasonable but I’ve noticed the generic filament profiles are slower than Bambi brand filament profiles. YMMV.

(Also I recommend printing the Pastamatic in PETG. I started with PLA and reprinted all the gears and axles in PETG, then epoxied the PLA frame together.)

Biked 21 minutes today which was 3.26 miles and an average speed of 9.2mph... Cemetery was a good ride. Only one car drove through, and one cop car was parked there.

You can take the Oak Leaf trail all down the lake front and through Bay View. It’s actually a trail system, so it has a east-west connector on the Hank Aaron Trail, and then there’s an Oak Leaf trail that roughly follows the river and parkways to the west going north and south.

@rasterweb @bucknam
If you ride south on that western Oak Leaf to Greenfield Park Golf Course, you can get in the New Berlin connector trail and ride all the way to Waukesha. Riding street level in Waukesha gets to the Glacial Drumlin trail which runs to Cottage Grove — almost all the way to Madison.

Overall I’m very happy with it even though it has frequent road crossings and occasionally makes you ride on the road.

The Interactive Map (or just plain Google maps) is better than their subway-style map since you really have to know where things are to use the subway-style abstracted map.

Went for a bike ride this morning. Haven’t ridden outside in a few years. Did just over 2 miles in about 12 minutes. I suppose ya gotta start somewhere.

mathiasx,
@mathiasx@mastodon.xyz avatar

@rasterweb it’s great to ride the bike because suddenly your range is so much farther than walking.

mathiasx,
@mathiasx@mastodon.xyz avatar

@rasterweb for your location, getting over to the park with the Oak Leaf Trail in it is a good way to see a bit more trees, the river, and generally something different. All up to you, though.

mathiasx,
@mathiasx@mastodon.xyz avatar

@rasterweb not sure on the rules there, but fair warning that the military cemetery doesn’t allow bikes on its roads and I try to honor their sign’s request. (But I ride through the Old Soldiers Home next to that cemetery, on my way to the Hank Aaron trail.)

mathiasx,
@mathiasx@mastodon.xyz avatar

@rasterweb strength and endurance will definitely come. Also note that many people think that you should be pushing the pedals fairly slowly and hard. (<60bpm) where cyclists typically will pedal 80bpm while cruising and you can shift into an appropriate gear to do so (and if you’ve got the gears. Even on a three speed though, you don’t want to be crawling around in the hardest gears.)

mathiasx,
@mathiasx@mastodon.xyz avatar

@rasterweb happy to take a ride some time with weather like this! 😁

The UPS for my home network started going bad this week, and apparently it isn’t designed to “fail open” to operate like a power strip / surge protector — it started cycling power instead, presumably because the lead acid battery is no good after many years of service. One little reminder that I’m no where near if I can’t even keep this running without having to buy replacements. (Future UPSes should be based on some heavy, long-lived battery chemistry!)

Anecdotal: 2 pairs of Bedphones fell apart within a year of starting use — I do not recommend them due to this durability problem and the loudness problem.
