I do sell printed things, but they are just custom enclosures that wrap around the electronic devices and controllers I sell.

Digital fabrication allows for specific customization I cannot really get with other methods without a huge investment, so it works for me.

And I really do want to lower the amount of waste and the impact I have on the planet, so even though I do like 3D printing, I sometimes hate it...

More reason why I think we need a really good, cheap, open source hardware filament shredder and recycler (not just the petg bottle recyclers)

Printing a big design for cable organization in my drawers! Both pieces of https://www.printables.com/model/274250-ikea-alex-cable-organizer , which will take about 16 hours on my Bambu printer — a relatively fast printer — at 0.2mm layer height.

mathiasx,
@mathiasx@mastodon.xyz avatar

@stooovie yeah, I just don’t have the 0.6 nozzle yet to swap in. It’s on my list to try!

In the meantime, allowing the printer to go from “standard” to “sport” mode knocked this down to a 12 hour print.

@RyunoKi I like to see what people I know are rating books and what they’re generally reading. Not all of it will line up, but it has been very helpful in the past on Goodreads. I don’t tend to write actual reviews of books, just give them a star rating for myself.

It appears that I need to recompile the firmware/image since I am not using their camera (which gets some RAM allocated to it -- RAM that I'd rather have back.)

I hate 3D printed threads…

mathiasx,
@mathiasx@mastodon.xyz avatar

@rasterweb definitely a case for a different kind of joint. The threads on the Pastamatic are large and funky looking, but they work. Otherwise i think I’d prefer some sort of peg joint with a screw retaining the “cap” even though hardware adds cost.

mathiasx,
@mathiasx@mastodon.xyz avatar

@rasterweb manual cranking for 2kg of filament will take a long time, but the drill (on the Pastamatic) can go too fast and suddenly you’ve got loose filament spaghetti-ing all over.

The book I’m reading (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/42973186) references several books that inspired the 70’s hippie communes or were written about those communes. Does anyone know books about more recent attempts at realizing anarchist communities?

@rasterweb this why I wish I would’ve just printed “clickfinity” baseplates that don’t use magnets or bolts. But I’ve already printed all my base plates. https://www.printables.com/model/452675-gridfinity-clickfinity-baseplate-no-magnets-univer

Multi-material printing on the Bambu is incredibly wasteful, it turns out. Using a cheaper plain PLA as supports for PLA-CF. I didn’t think about how it needs to change filament every layer and how that’d mean another little bit of each filament in the “waste bucket” and another layer on the “waste tower.”

I’ll measure after but I think I’ll have used just as much waste filament as the mass of the print and the supports.

I found my old AlphaSmart 2000.

(Anybody want it?)

mathiasx,
@mathiasx@mastodon.xyz avatar

@rasterweb I’ve got something similar! If I actually wrote long form writing without needing things like Markdown formatting and links, I might actually be tempted to figure out an IR receiver over USB that could receive .txt files from it. The keyboard is ok but not a great mechanical keyboard. I need to build something like this with proper switches, or whatever @requiem is working on for writing on.

mathiasx,
@mathiasx@mastodon.xyz avatar

@rasterweb @requiem I also loved the Newton eMate 300 form factor (in fact I may have given mine to you, Pete?) but it was very heavy kid-safe plastic and not very powerful or useful on the early 2000’s even. I don’t know that it ran the full NewtonOS and third party apps either; I only ever used it to write text files. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMate_300

The Gridfinity system looked interesting, but unless I can do the whole thing in OpenSCAD it's just not as interesting to me...

Luckily there is an OpenSCAD version!

Now I need to decide if I really want to go that route.

@rasterweb definitely use one of the parametric designs that use less filament than the original Gridfinity files. The original magnet base plates in particular use WAY too much filament compared to newer designs. I also found a very minimal bin with a printable separate label design (so you can print new labels that snap in) that I’ll share if I can find the link.

@mathiasx@mastodon.xyz avatar
mathiasx,
@mathiasx@mastodon.xyz avatar

@rasterweb ok here’s a recommendation from work for better bins AND they’re openscad parametric. https://www.printables.com/model/517479-reinforced-economical-gridfinity-bins-no-vase-mode
