Thin-film knots

Because anything you can do with mangled circles and meanders, you can certainly do with a modulated torus knot

Same basic procedure as with the glowing bubbles from yesterday, but instead of a noise-mutated circle I start with a smooth looping meander

dθ(s) = sΣ[i=1:N](A[i] sin( (2π/λ[i])s)
(x,y) = (∫[0:s] cos(dθ(s)), ∫[0:s] sin(dθ(s)))

And use the x coordinate of a random modulated torus knot to get the far edge
x(θ) = σ cos(pθ) ω Σ(rx[i] * cos(qx[i]θ))

The sense of shimmer is less obvious than with the bubble. Because of the thinness relative to the extension, the curves creating the fill aren't as extreme in general

I'm a great fan of these looping meanders. They are all quite lovely.

Here's a bonus: this was debugging, but I like the architectural simplicity of it

Today in What The Actual Fantasy, JavaScript edition, I'm reminded that the JavaScript constructor "new Date(2024, 4, 10)" returns May 10, 2024 because the month (and only the month!) is zero indexed.

Using high luminosity colours on many low-opacity lines.

mathling,
@mathling@mastodon.social avatar

Using noise functions for the warping and colouring: the particular noise function has a few sharp edges, making for some odd discontinuities

mathling,
@mathling@mastodon.social avatar

Last one: Lava vortex

I bump up the luminance of the colour palette because I think these look better on a black background and because the high luminance colours seem to give a better sense of sheen

Dear fellow Californians, before you roll your eyes and laugh at how all a-twitter the NYC crowd is getting about a small earthquake, bear in mind what passes for a "storm" to our local weather reporters and the breathless excitement engendered by a dusting of snow on Mt. Hamilton

Let's all be kind

Fun with letterforms

@bosak Not that much harder, technically. Right now I'm just plucking random words and repeating them up to some number of glyphs. I could pluck them from a text file just as well. Have to special case spaces somehow.

The tricky parts are: picking the line of poetry (long enough to be meaningful, short enough to be visible) and picking an appropriate font.

Have to think about it
