@scottearle Great, tight, insider type police proc. Be aware they’re set twenty-odd years earlier than the show, and they proceed rather differently. Each season of the show draws loosely from a couple of books at a time. Honestly the first is one of the best (Black Echo), so try it!

A modest request, from authors and other artists (like app developers and so on) — if you like someone’s work, it REALLY HELPS if you give it a star-rating in relevant online stores.

It’s not about vanity, or word-of-mouth; those ratings algorithmically determine whether the book/app/etc is promoted to others, which in turn affects sales/downloads, and thus livelihoods. They control visibility!

If every dev who’s rightly upset/intimidated/disappointed with Apple’s latest round of malicious compliance actually did something about it, Apple would notice. Social media posts and podcasts and blog articles are safely ignorable; they do nothing unless you’re part of a very select group. Instead, write to Tim Cook, and also to the EU.

Just loooooove looking at these. I know I’m going on about it, but there have been years when I didn’t think the day would come.

The reason the colours work well is that they were chosen using opposition and quadrants on a colour wheel, beginning with my favourite colour. Which means that you can also readily work out which colour book 4 in the series will be!

reason why iCloud continues to be a failure. It takes 20 minutes (and counting) to upload 1.7MB

@seanreilly (Thank you!) When iCloud gets like that here — rarely — I find it’s usually something wrong locally rather than the network. I assume you have blistering broadband and wifi. I also find the Mac has more iCloud issues than the iOS devices, for whatever reason. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Vlog people, a question. I want to do the occasional video from the perspective of looking down at my desk, i.e. at a tablet on the surface. I have a clamp/goose-neck to hold the phone (camera). The issue is lighting, when daylight isn’t an option.

The room light is central, and desk is at a wall, so there are harsh upwards shadows on the screen. If I block it with my body and use a diffuse fill light from up/left of tablet, it’s better, but still a little shadowy. Any advice?

The way it works is that I inscribe the COVER of the e-book for you, with your name, a brief message, and my signature, and then build you a custom ePub file (DRM-free!). You get it via email. Is there a way to use iOS 17’s Personal Voice feature to read lengthy texts and record the output to an audio file yet? I ask this every couple of months.

@c0dec0dec0de I’m pretty sure it’s a legal thing. They explicitly say you can only use Personal Voice for non-commercial purposes; I think they’ve blocked it to prevent people from easily making longer recordings.
