Ten days with his thing, most days light usage but several multi-hour note-taking sessions and a lot of faffing around with settings, and itโ€™s just dropped to 49% battery. It arrived here with 93%, and Iโ€™ve never charged it.

@scottearle Thereโ€™s a combined Kindle called the Scribe too!

@ctietze Iโ€™d be interested to hear about your sync solution. I havenโ€™t signed into Boox and donโ€™t really want to. I donโ€™t think I really need sync, but occasional backup would be useful.

Sorry itโ€™s a bit too tightly cropped at the end regarding the case. Witness the madness of it!

@ctietze Ingram these days. The way it works is that you specify the trim size, paper stock, page count etc, and it produces a custom template with suitable guides, in the right colour-space and at the appropriate DPI. Also generates the barcode from your ISBN. You can try it here: https://myaccount.ingramspark.com/Portal/Tools/CoverTemplateGenerator

@ctietze Theyโ€™re good. They have print services locally in the EU, UK, and US (the old LightningSource facilities). The main benefit of Ingram is that theyโ€™ll also handle catalogue-insertion so that regular bookstores know about the book, and also handle Amazon, both in terms of the catalogue and supplying copies for warehousing.

@DJDarren Must be the time of day I always use it (late morning), but I didnโ€™t even know that Ferrite had a dark theme.

I still feel nervous when my wife reads one of my books for the first time.

@dxzdb Neither of us can remember that ever happening. She says that Iโ€™m the more romantic one, and donโ€™t have a problem with those parts!

Careful out there, Edinburgh. Pavements are an ice rink this morning. Iโ€™ve just put my neighbour into an ambulance after she fell in her own driveway and broke her shin.

Hereโ€™s to whatโ€™s coming in the new year.

Itโ€™s the time of year when my three-year-old barges into the bathroom while Iโ€™m in the shower and insists on singing a litany of Christmas songs back to back, concluding โ€” as always โ€” with a statement that he is hungry but only for biscuits.

Watershed parenting moments this weekend. Son, 3, has lately been watching a kidsโ€™ entertainer on youtube whose schtick is pretty much scenarios that use what I know to be videogame mechanics. My dad brain thinks, aha, I can use this to get him into games! So I casually mention I have a game where he can also see lava, and things freezing with ice, and monsters, and so on โ€” and I put Tears of the Kingdom on.

mattgemmell,
@mattgemmell@mastodon.scot avatar

Son is RAPT. Points things out, asks to go and see them, enquires about characters and scenarios. Seems amazed that the game mechanics heโ€™s already seen are replicated here in interactive form. Heโ€™s on the couch beside me, cuddled in, for two hours. Never asks to press the buttons, just constantly agog. So weโ€™re exploring Hyrule and, entirely unplanned by me, we happen upon a balloon canopy component.

mattgemmell,
@mattgemmell@mastodon.scot avatar

Son says โ€œthat looks like a hot air balloon!โ€, just as an observation, and I canโ€™t properly express how excited I was, because this is Tears of the Kingdom and it has the physics model and the construction mechanics, and thereโ€™s a balloon basket assembly near by. So I go WELL, maybe we can build a hot air balloon. So we do that. Then I ask, how could we make it fly? And heโ€™s already learned from youtube: โ€œFire can make it go!โ€ So I put a flame emitter on there, and we FLY.

mattgemmell,
@mattgemmell@mastodon.scot avatar

We did the same down at Lurelin on the south coast, where he saw a stationary boat and asked if we could make it go, and I said well maybe we could build a boat ourselves (having seen a big board lying on the beach nearby). We do that, and cruise the southern sea. I can see THE EMPOWERMENT OF KNOWLEDGE written upon his wee face. Neurons starting to high-five each other and form a dim view of the idea of underlying principles that make the gears of the world turn.

Just tooling around in Zelda not really accomplishing anything in-game, but lads it was maybe the most important and rewarding thing Iโ€™ve ever done? His first words the next morning (today) to his mother were โ€œI want to see Link and go and see a castle and some goblins, and a dragon, and the red yuck that makes you sick.โ€

mattgemmell,
@mattgemmell@mastodon.scot avatar

Just that coincidence of him knowing what a hot air balloon was, that heat makes it rise, recognising the design in the game, and the game offering the actual mechanic to build it and make it fly, was an incredible moment for a dad. Caught him at exactly the right age and developmental stage. I (mostly accidentally) did something super incredible for my kid, thanks in large part to Zelda TOTKโ€™s game design.

Lots of spam calls from 0845 numbers lately. All I ask is that we hunt down those responsible, strap them to an uncomfortable chair, give them a few strikes with the claw end of a hammer, and then repeatedly electrify their urethra.
