Very glad that finally my favourite music website has got a long overdue refresh at its front end, it was so painful to browse without using the reader view in Firefox.

After uninstalling reddit from my phone last week I had a drop in phone screen time of 38%.

I found myself so many times fumbling with my phone in a dull state, tapping around the screen while searching for something I couldnโ€™t find (reddit app). And then I move on to something else.

Talking about addictions. And procrastination.

OK I understand the meme of hitting on frameworks, I get it, there are too many of them and all.

But let me tell you:

I'm implementing a web app with AJAX only and it's such a pain in the ass, I now completely understand the desperate need of JS frameworks for these use cases (SPAs).

It constantly feels like everything is hacked together and convoluted that I'm SO close to write my own framework each time I open my editor.

Spoiler alert: I won't, though.

@itsfoss I wonder why you mention this software in your latest newsletter? Itโ€™s obviously not FOSS. If youโ€™re advertising it you should say so.

I've been thinking this morning about @matthiasott 's latest newsletter about sharing bookmarks on your blog/personal website.

I love the idea and I'm trying to figure out how I wanna implement it.

My first impulse would be sort of a weekly dump of links more than curated bookmarks though.

Well I could definitely have both...but I find interesting the idea of collecting all the interesting bits of articles, music, videos, software, etc. during the week and make a blog post to share them.

Today I marked exactly one week of procrastination.

Good job!

Why is it so hard to do what you need to do?

Apparently there's a new single out, available at midnight GMT (23rd).

I'm offficially hyped.

@mauro@mograph.social avatar

It'll never cease to amaze me how much is good for text editing, even for non-coding related tasks.

For example I maintain these checklists for packing, one for summer travelling and one for winter. I've moved them everywhere: StandardNotes, Apple Notes, . Every software has its own issues with this simple task, which consists in storing a markdown file with clickable checks.

The best solution? VimWiki synced on a private GitHub repo so I can also check it on my phone.

mauro,
@mauro@mograph.social avatar

@alx I love Logseq, it's my PKM app of choice, but editing text in there is a pain, even with the vim plugin installed. In particular checklists that are not todos don't work well at all. And the markdown it generates, if you ever tried to export it, can be quite messy.

I got back to my studies, building an app in , and so far the very last of my problems is actually writing code. The hard part is figuring out what data I need, decide the database structure, the data flow, the overall architecture of the app, albeit not too fancy. So when I read about the fears of LLMs robbing devs of actual work I can see how this is not gonna be the case, most likely. Thereโ€™s too much decision making involved in developing to be fully automated yet.

LLMs are great tools to work faster though, and also to try stuff out on the fly, prototyping. Thatโ€™s undeniable.
Also, theyโ€™re a much faster way to search into documentations, much more efficient.

It's incredible how we so desperately need the intervents of a deeply flawed institution like the EU just to keep at bay the crazyness of a fundamentaly fucked up system which is the neoliberal US and its ghoulish mega corporations, so that they won't eat or destroy the rest of the world completely.

Who would have thought, right?

I honestly don't get the excitement of some people here for Threads.

The very original reason I discovered the Fediverse was to avoid all those bullshit corporate silos, I feel no need at all to connect to the latest influencers here, or to any kind of brand that wants to sell me something.

It you want to use Threads, go use Threads, I'd say. To each their own.

@mauro@mograph.social avatar

Also, on a more pragmatical note, for a small instance like ours federating with Threads will most certainly mean another increase in costs because of the unavoidable increase in connections and database storage space.

That's another no for me, as we are barely breaking even with the costs right now. That would literally mean using money from donations to allow connections with a Meta product.

Where does this even start to make sense?

@Jdreben thanks for the suggestions! I'm actually going full in with web development for now. I need a job sooner than later :D But definitely I'd love to learn more in depth compsci stuff. Never too late!

mauro,
@mauro@mograph.social avatar

@Jdreben this must have been such a great experience. I was so impressed by the production quality of the lectures, and really Malan is like a really skilled actor and communicator (and teacher), and he sweats wholesomeness for the whole time :D

mauro,
@mauro@mograph.social avatar

@Jdreben so you can confirm I won't be wating time learning Django (for CS50w). That was the only thing that was keeping me from enrolling. I know I'd rather have to learn JS/TS based backends to get a job nowadays. But I'm confident that no matter what CS50w will give me some solid fundamentals anyway.
I read a lot a great things about svelte as well, I'll definitely have a look after the introduction to React, I still don't have a concrete idea about these front end frameworks.

mauro,
@mauro@mograph.social avatar

@Jdreben thatโ€™s really great to know!
