I seem to boost far more than I post. I should do something about that.

In some queer spaces, people speak of running away to ‘better countries’ when things become really bad but (1) things are also bad in many of those countries (2) I don’t think all of you will legally or financially be able to go to those countries. The idea that fascism is an immigration hop away downplays how relentless fascism is, and how difficult immigration is

@skinnylatte a non-western friend was super offended with me when I told him marrying his Portuguese gf and getting a spousal visa was the easiest way to get a UK visa. This was pre-brexit and they got married. I assume they both applied for settled status as they qualified for that post brexit. He was also resentful that I had a Tier 1 self certified (and no longer available) that was a super pain to get. I moved back to Canada. TotallyNormalIsland(tm) isn’t my problem and I had an easy out

Without a shadow of a doubt the single most useful class I ever took in school at any level, was TOUCH TYPING in Junior High. A room full of big old mechanical manual typewriters. Endless seemingly silly exercises.

At the time, my thinking was that it would be useful later for writing term papers and such. I of course had not an inkling that I would essentially spend my entire career chained to terminal and computer keyboards.

@lauren we had a high school graduation requirement of at least one business course. Typing was the least “business” and I did a lot of computer stuff so seemed a no brainier to take typing. Now touch typing while looking straight at someone during a convo blows their minds all the time for some reason.

@lauren french then Latin. French teacher was evil and parents wouldn’t let me drop langs. and Latin is the root of so many others and was surprisingly helpful when I ended up in Italy for 2 years

@lauren also really useful in sciences with it being a dead immutable language and not having to worry about shifting meanings/interpretations

I really love when Europeans say they want to move to the US and ‘find a job’ then they realize they have to get in a visa lottery after getting a job, and they’re outraged at the idea of visas (or that they’re in the same shit as everybody else)

(Why would people want to move to the US when it’s obviously awful? Because, look at salaries in any industry in a mid tier U.S. city vs a top European city other than London)

maya_b,
@maya_b@hachyderm.io avatar

@skinnylatte nah London is expensive enough to take the top off of it. And the govt there has gone full on in creating a cost of living crisis, along with 20% food inflation.

"While these laws directly affect universities that receive public funding, the survey administrators were surprised to learn that faculty from private schools were also feeling pressure from these laws.

'I heard from a couple of folks from private universities that would be well-regarded nationally, and they were having trouble hiring,' Brian Evans, AAUP’s Texas conference president, told reporters on Wednesday. “People just didn’t want to come to Texas.”

When people post diatribes about how one should post, makes me think they have too much time on their hands, and that they need a control freak intervention.

maya_b,
@maya_b@hachyderm.io avatar

@StillIRise1963 Reminds me of a post I saw from the self-annointed "HTML writer's guild" in 1995. I think they lasted about 8 minutes (the internet was slower back then). I remember my two word response to their manifesto.

@rouxdoo @GryphonSK Canadian here who just moved back from the UK where they have no issue with the C word.

In the late '80s there was a school shooting in the UK with a handgun, which appalled everyone. Pretty much over night, all private handguns were turned in and nobody has them anymore.

As for the US, always wondering if I'm going to get shot when I'm there. Except the neighbourhood I visited friends in in LA which was heavily gang indicted. Felt OK because ... ? But Beverly Hills jfc

Also me: discovers I forgot to drink the coffee

maya_b,

@thomasfuchs my old office space had an industrial caffeine dispenser. I had a similar experience one morning where I forgot the coffee in the machine. Came back to a confused small crowd staring at the mug, picked up my coffee, shrugged, shook my head, and walked away slurping it.

I really appreciate how clearly my cat can communicate his nuanced emotional state in the run-up to being fed. He purrs like a diesel engine while continually meowing insistently at me to hurry the fuck up. Excitement, anticipation, and impatience. All coming through quite clearly.

maya_b,
@maya_b@hachyderm.io avatar

@c0dec0dec0de the purring only comes after with mine. Before hand the hurry up is shrieking at top volume that it’s food time and I’m late in delivering it.
