I'm going to ramble a bit, but it will hopefully come around to something. When I was growing up, I read a lot of older historical book series, a big one would be the Little House On The Prairie series. While I really enjoyed it, there are some very obviously negative portrayals of Native Americans and African Americans. I remember being angry about it as a kid, and my Dad telling me, that part of learning about history is that we have to acknowledge the people we were, and still are. But because Little House on the Prairie is only semi-autobiographical, I still have mixed feelings about this. I do think they are well written books by a female author, an interesting perspective on early American life, and as an adult I can see and acknowledge the issues with the text. If we try to get rid of every author with racist ideas there wouldn't be much left to read from the 20th Century, and it also feels like being dishonest about who we are. So, I'm very mixed, how do you all feel about it? Do you think children can handle books with racial issues like this if it's explained to them? What is our responsibility here?

maya_b,
@maya_b@hachyderm.io avatar

@RickiTarr

There's a philosophy(?) that:
We aren't responsible for how we got to this moment, but we are responsible for what we do from now going forward.

I like that as it allows us to change, acknowledge screw-ups, and move forward to a better place. We can acknowledge, own and move on positively.

However, that conflicts directly with the litigious nature we've fallen into, and any admission is something to be punished, rather than a teachable/learning moment.

On weekends I pull out a mattress and sleep in the living room with Mila, my 17yo cat who loves cuddling but can’t come upstairs anymore (arthritis).

Her face goes from 0 (cuddling) to 100 (you better wake up now I’m hungry) real quick.

(She’s on Solensia, it helps; we can’t use ramps because of the way our apartment is designed)

We used cosequin with our and that was a night and day difference for her. Even at 24yo she could do stairs easily enough, and short hops up onto furniture, no big leaps though.

I don't use . Don't even have an account. Can't stand the app. But this thing with TikTok in the US is grossing me out. It's one thing to ban the thing but quite another to force the co to sell the platform to a US company. That's like a land grab, even if money is exchanged. This is going to put a chill on business relations not just with China but with companies globally, because they'll be wondering, "will I be the next Bytedance? Will they try to grab my company too?"

maya_b,
@maya_b@hachyderm.io avatar

@liztai

It also really does nothing to solve the underlying rational which is user data privacy - why not regulate consumer data protections?

What it really signals is that only US companies can profit from consumer surveillance.
