In future, I will never, ever, ever, ever again by anything from Western Digital or any of its subsidiaries/brands. Just had a year-old top-of-the-line NVMe SSD die for no good reason. Honestly, I have no idea how much data I’ve lost. In future, I will also be much more militant about taking off-line backups.

@lynnskyi @NoahCarver Yeah, my compassion to you. And also, SSD drives are far from being a good backup medium, as far as I know. Better hard drives and/or clouds and/or optical disks like DVD.

@lynnskyi @NoahCarver You can buy an external hard drive and use a USB connection to your phone. However, iPhone being a super closed environment, it's a pain in the back to copy anything from and to it.

@Kaliah Probably that's because I'm a huge fan of Slack. To me, if developing an app in Electron and alikes at all, that's very close to how it must be done for accessibility. With Discord… I tried, I didn't really get it.

@Caoimhe @Kaliah Yes, I was lucky enough that they made it accessible just before I found my previous job. there we used Slack and I was happy. We once tried to use Teams for everything (we used Slack for chats, Microsoft Teams for calls), but it was just awful. Slack does almost everything right: channels, messages, message editing, emojis, Windows notifications, everything is just intuitive.

@cordova5029 @Kaliah I still use Skype, believe it or not. The main reason is talking to my mom. First, the sound quality is good, and second, it endures our super long conversations.

@TruthSandwich got me interested in the vibrational modes of bells. They're not harmonics with frequencies 1, 2, 3, 4, ... times the lowest frequency: they're much more complicated! That's why bells sound clangy. This chart shows how they sometimes work.

The lowest frequency vibrations are called:

• the 'hum' (the lowest frequency)

• the 'prime' (with frequency roughly 2 times that of the hum)

• the 'tierce' (roughly 2.4 times the hum, so a minor third above the prime)

• the 'quint' (roughly 3 times the hum, so a major fifth above the prime)

• the 'nominal' (roughly 4 times the hum, so an octave above the prime)

and so on. If you think these names are illogical, join the club! One reason it's tricky is that the loudest vibration is not the lowest one: it's the 'prime'.

The numbers I just gave you should be taken with a big grain of salt. They really depend on the shape of the bell, and you'd have to be great at designing bells to make them come out as shown here. It's not like a violin string or flute, where the math is on your side.

The bell vibrates both radially and axially and the principal vibrational modes are shown in the diagram together with their classification using the scheme proposed by Perrin et al. @johncarlosbaez @TruthSandwich Also keep in mind that at least in christian church there are two types of bells musically: orthodox, or Eastern bells, and Western bells. Google for a catholic or an evangelist church vs. orthodox church, and you'll get what I mean. To be super simple, with Western bells you can play a melody, with Eastern ones you cannot because well, there are too many notes and there is no separate audible "main tone" (sorry, I'm not a mathematician, I just have perfect pitch).

@Caoimhe @x0 @LaurenCeleste Since forever :) the only drawback that it has no interface so far, you have to take an existing keymap, copy it and edit the file. and to keep it through updates, it's better to add "-custom" to the file name, it's a dash, and then the word "custom", for example: my-custom.keymap.

Good vocalizer voices, but if I can't switch the languages the way I want, then they are not of use to me. Might as well switch synthesizers. Or just, use Mac. This ain't hope for my multilingual brain, just so we're clear. It's been years and vocalizer haven't solved the problem, or realised, that their switching languages is totally not working as expected.

Петиция: IT-специалистам предлагают установить зарплату не более 5 МРОТ

На портале Российской общественной инициативы опубликована петиция с требованием законодательно снизить доходы работающих в сфере информационных технологий граждан. Автор петиции, слесарь Чебоксарского троллейбусного депо Василий Хрюкин, считает, что зарплаты IT-специалистов в последние годы "перешли все рамки дозволенного".

"Посмотрите, сколько получают программисты и прочие клавиатурщики, а какая получка у простых инженеров и учителей. Государству следует навести порядок в этой сфере, чтобы не допустить роста социальной напряжённости", — пишет Хрюкин.

Инициативу Хрюкина поддержал лидер КПРФ Геннадий Зюганов. Он предложил "перераспределить доходы тех, кто только стучит по клавиатуре, в пользу реальных трудящихся". По замыслу Зюганова, IT-специалисты смогут получать в месяц не более 5 МРОТ (в 2024 году это порядка 96 тысяч рублей), а остальные средства их работодатели будут обязаны направлять в бюджет и благотворительные фонды.

"Уже в мае Государственная дума рассмотрит ходатайство граждан и примет решение. Убеждён, что шикующим клавиатурщикам вместе с их безработными бабами за глаза хватит 100 тысяч в месяц, а остальное пусть пойдёт на благие народные дела", — заявил Зюганов.

По прогнозам экспертов, в случае введения ограничений на максимальный размер оплаты труда IT-специалистов, в бюджет будет ежемесячно поступать дополнительно до 100 миллиардов рублей.

The YouTube app on iOS is getting so bad that I'm seriously considering canceling YouTube premium. The number of swipes required for a single video listing is increasing, not decreasing; and there's a swipe trap in the title section of the video player now, so you have to explore by touch to get past a certain point. Anyone know the best way to give accessibility feedback on Google apps? I can't imagine they are somehow unaware of how stunningly awful this app has become, but I can at least write to them and say I did my part.
