I've just tried to call Europe in the UK. Guess what they told me to do? Call on the 2nd of January. Thank you so much.

@serichsen It's solved already, thanks Scott! I was wondering if I could reset a BrailleNote touch Plus. I was provided with a device for testing and added my main GMail account onto it, so wanted to make sure nobody could read it :)

It just occurred to me that come June 22, I'll have had a phone for 10 years. Getting my 4S was truly my entrance into online communities, and so I'm very close to having been on the internet for 10 years. I definitely, definitely had access too young. In June of 2014, I was 8. That's just a tiny bit insane.

Dear fediverse, what is an adequate freeware (even better, if ) replacement for for ? Current needs: take a painting made by hand, make it a vector graphics image and do some other stuff with it. Sorry for being so vague, I'm totally blind, it's for my wife who is not on fediverse (yet). Thank you so much!

@Ryan thanks, I heard about Gimp before but thought it was for Linux only.

simon, to random

For several months now, I've been using an app called Due for reminders, and I think it is helping me more than any other app I've tried. It has interactive notifications that let you reschedule or complete reminders from the lock screen; Siri support; a set of really nice sounds that can be chosen per-reminder; all the usual recurring features; and best of all, customizable auto-snoowhze, which causes the reminder to repeat until you either reschedule or complete it. Its tagline is "never forget anything again", and I'm not sure the developer could have done a better job making that happen. https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/due-reminders-timers/id390017969

menelion,
@menelion@dragonscave.space avatar

@simon Wow, thank you! am I right that it will nag you until you turn it off? That's the feature I've been searching for in all reminder apps. Like, not beep twice and go away, but reeeeally annoy me till I shut the reminder up.

@simon Cool, thank you!

The more I learn about of the Soviet Union, the more I realize just how much my native was actively stifled, prevented from developing and innovating, and forced into this image of a backwards and hopeless nation.

Our people have always been so phenomenal, talented, ambitious, kind, and creative. But they’ve been punished, scared, and intimidated into a terrible subservient existence for so many decades and centuries.

I love Ukraine, but god history is unfair.

menelion,
@menelion@dragonscave.space avatar

@mariyadelano Not only Ukraine. I've just finished a book about how parts of modern China were devastated and terrorized by communists. Red plague and brown plague are basically the same.

menelion,
@menelion@dragonscave.space avatar

@mariyadelano Well, I'm also Ukrainian, but still it's relevant for all of our poor planet. So many peoples oppressed, exiled, terrorized, murdered, just horrible.

I want to move my GitHub repositories to and my question is, github seems to have a robust terminal/Cli program. I tried to register for a codeberg account, but they’re accessibility solution for getting around the captcha is to send them an email with registration details. Has anyone else done this? And if you have, and if you got an account, what is their terminal support like on windows?

menelion,
@menelion@dragonscave.space avatar

@weirdwriter I do have a @Codeberg account, but I really don't remember whether there was a captcha when I did sign up. I need to talk to them. In general, people behind @forgejo which is the Git solution powering Codeberg are very friendly and they listen to our accessibility needs. I'm mentioning some of them so they can chime in an join the discussion. @fnetX @Gusted

@serge Shabbat Shalom from a goy with many Jewish friends and interested in Jewish culture. I was always interested, why Babka? I know several different meanings of this word (I'm Ukrainian), but well, none of those have associations with a server name in my head :)

menelion,

@serge Fair enough. But what does it actually mean in your case? To me it can be anything from a grandmother to a pastern (the part above a horse's hoof) :))

Re about the bug, thanks @pitermach. It affects only multilingual people who have different apps in different languages. I'll boost Piotr's reply next.

menelion, to iOS
@menelion@dragonscave.space avatar

Dear blind users! Please note: in latest iOS betas there is an extremely nasty bug where several apps turn your phone into totally unusable state. You cannot reload VoiceOver, you cannot do anything at all besides restarting the phone. Be super mega careful! I know so far one German app (very important, it's PhotoTan app from which basically is needed for authorization of every significant bank operation), and one Russian app. I even don't know what to suggest if you have no sighted help and no spare device where you can run BeMyEyes or so. Anyway, if you encounter such an app, do the volume up — volume down — side button dance to force restart, I have no other idea. Again, be super careful! I'd like to CC @JonathanMosen because it might need to be spread for a wider audience, and @lynnskyi because I know you use only your phone, so again, be extremely careful, you'll never know what app will cause it to behave like this. Thanks.

menelion,
@menelion@dragonscave.space avatar

@pitermach @JonathanMosen @lynnskyi Oh! my! gosh! Piotr, I admire people like you (allbeit sometimes I'm one of them). How did you find that out?

menelion,
@menelion@dragonscave.space avatar

State of iOS Braille support in May, 2024. Still shit. Nothing has been fixed. Nothing has changed. Cool.

menelion,
@menelion@dragonscave.space avatar

@fireborn @TheQuinbox I'm back to Android virtually the same day I know there is a working magic tap on Android, I'm tired of Apple actually.

menelion,
@menelion@dragonscave.space avatar

@TheQuinbox @fireborn Probably you missed that thread, Quin. that all started after I read a review of Samsung Galaxy A55 made by a blind person. There they state that it's all OK but to answer a WhatsApp call, you need to find a tiny little window at the top of the screen. I was like eight years on Android only, and my most awful stress point was to answer a call because there is no single and unique way to do it for all messengers. On iPhone the magic tap just works everywhere: usual phone, WhatsApp, Telegram, Skype, Teams, whatever else. for me it's super important.

Паршу, парсю или парщу?

menelion,

@cariefisher I don't knot whether you work at GitHub, but if yes, there is an accessibility feature I've been asking for years already, I did talk to GitHub employees, but still no dice… I'm talking about multiline commenting. I.e., in pull request view, you cannot comment on multiple lines at once if you are blind or at least if you don't use a mouse.

Did you know if you're working in the command line you can use clip to pipe the output of your command to the clipboard? 👀

For example, you can do this in cmd if you want to copy and paste the info somewhere else (rather than manually having to select the output to copy it):

systeminfo | clip

menelion,
@menelion@dragonscave.space avatar

@JenMsft I wonder if it works in SSH sessions. If yes, then I had been an idiot for at least four years to select and copy everything to Notepad for further review.

How long does it take you guys to eat a chocolate bar? Do you just eat the whole thing in one go, or do you portion it out over time? Maybe you have any other pattern you follow? I usually try to make it last as long as possible, which isn't always feasible. But oh well... I'm looking forward to your confessions lol.

menelion,
@menelion@dragonscave.space avatar

@Caoimhe Me too, I'm like you, but it really depends on the bar, on my mood, how tired I am and so on. Eat a Roshen bar for me, please :)

@Caoimhe Of course it's good if it's Roshen (okay, I know, I'm biased :))
