Isn’t it so embarrassing how the audio quality of Dice World, a simple dice game, is much better than of an actual messaging platform like Discord?

menelion,
@menelion@dragonscave.space avatar

@Caoimhe Oh! You play Dice World, what's your user name? Mine is Menelion, of course. And what games do you like? I play all six, but my top three are Farkle, Yathzee and Pig.

I've never used signal or Telegram. the accessibility of both is appalling.

menelion,
@menelion@dragonscave.space avatar

@KaraLG84 For Telegram it is not. As it has an extensive API allowing to write third-party clients, we have at least Unigram (mainstream) and TweeseCake (blind-specific) for Windows. There are also some third-party apps for Android. I use Telegram every day.

@zersiax @KaraLG84 I remember Trying Signal on desktop, didn't like it, maybe something changed.

I've been using Windows 10 since 2017 and have only just worked out how to turn off that bloody group by date thing in the downloads folder. View on the ribbon menu, group and set it to none.
sometimes I do find that useful, like in the recycle bin I'll set it to group by folders but for some reason I never thought it'd be that simple in Downloads.

menelion,
@menelion@dragonscave.space avatar

@KaraLG84 I usually use the context menu, but sometimes it doesn't help for a long time. I.e., you deselect everything, press Shift+Applications, then select Group By, then None.

It's amazing the things you can learn about from books, I don't just mean facts and figures. In a novel I was reading once I heard about a firm that made extract of lime aftershave. Actually they make a whole set of toiletries with that smell. I really dislike the smell of men's toiletries normally, so I got some for @brianhartgen to try and he's used it ever since. It's the only smell of men's toiletries I really absolutely love.

menelion,
@menelion@dragonscave.space avatar

@lulu_bear could you please tell the name? It seems, I might also love the smell.

alexhall, to random

I tried Be My AI on a restaurant menu. I was initially impressed--it told me the items on each side of the two-page menu, identifying the names and some options. For instance, it said there were baskets, which options I could get, and what all baskets come with. It mentioned a chicken melt, so I asked for more details. Grilled chicken, Swiss cheese, and grilled onions on rye. The only problem? That chicken melt didn't exist. It made up the name, then made up details when I asked for more info.

menelion,
@menelion@dragonscave.space avatar

@weirdwriter @alexhall Except for the fact that, if you OCR, you might get something like: "this ^^%% is a .@ random piece of %* totally unrelated". I mean, the text might be separated into random parts and sprinkled with garbage characters. Of course, if it's a long text, I would OCR, but if it's an image, I'd first go for AI, especially given that I'm a JAWS user and I have Picture Smart AI at my fingertips.

Re last: Yes, that is a song! but I wonder, why didn't they sing it that way? (I'm talking about this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmSxPm1YcmQ)

Also, on Ireland at . If your one and only argument is that they represent non-binary people hence should be voted for, then have a big NO for me. If your reasoning for voting is to support non-binary people (which is totally your right I understand and appreciate), better vote for Switzerland. That's how non-binary people are represented, with a great song and good and spectacular performance.

@menelion@dragonscave.space avatar

Just had a little discussion on YouTube where a guy tried to convince me that the Ireland… performance on is a song. When I asked him whether he thinks that a song should be, well, sung, he replied that it is and sung very well. Well… well. I don't understand people's vision of music these days.

This is a big reason I find demands that users upgrade to the latest release to be unrealistic, and why companies need to support more versions than “latest minus one” or “current release minus 6 months” or whatever.

Reminds me of current problems with Sonos or Tandem.

menelion,
@menelion@dragonscave.space avatar

@Myndex @aardrian I'm sorry, I understand your users needs being a blind screen reader user myself, but it's just not how programming and viability works. Being a software engineer, I can tell you that it's beyond frustrating and burnout-prone to work constantly on something old without any possibilities to implement new features. And if we support a zillion older versions, we don't have time to progress. And also, USB-C standardization is one of the most important steps in modern technology. Need to have Mini-USB, Micro-USB, Lightning, USB type B and some proprietary cables really drives me nuts.

@seedy @sasquatch I prefer built-in OpenSSH over PuTTY. Also, I had deep troubles with porting GPG keys to another Windows machine, so for me SSH keys are the only solution whenever possible (thank gods now it's possible to sign Git commits with them).

Ooh yayayayayay, the Netherlands is in the grand final this Saturday! Along with another favourite of mine, Austria!

@crazydutchy both great indeed, I liked the Netherlands so much! And yes folks, keep singing in Dutch, it's so nice to hear different languages!

menelion,
@menelion@dragonscave.space avatar

@crazydutchy Speaking of Dutch songs, I really like De Diepte by S10. I mean, really. But for me it's also very often like this. For some reason (you can start hating me here), I found the so-called song from Ireland this year the most awful and disgusting thing I've heard in many years. Again, the keywords here are "heard" and "song". I acknowledge the video performance, although it's also not my style, so… you got it.

I finally got a response from where they're continuing to make the assertion that their new app has "basic support" for screen readers. We need to keep pushing back as this statement is just plainly false and seems to represent a dishonest way of trying to make the issue seem less terrible to the rest of the world while their disabled customers continue to suffer.

menelion,
@menelion@dragonscave.space avatar

@darrell73 Sorry, but to me it means this: "Can you open the app? Can you close the app? Basic support is there, you blind bastards." Utterly disgusting attitude, and I was planning to get one of their devices…
