A cranky biologist who means well. My hobbies include long walks off short piers and anything science related.

meyotch,

So one goes to the trouble of doing that and they didn’t think of something trenchant to say?

meyotch,

Right? I mean carpe diem with the juvenile vandalism. Someone had the moxie to ‘hack’ a sign, maybe think the message through at least a little?

meyotch,

I would genuinely like links to some of these studies. Do you have any specifics?

meyotch,

I think that he is an aspen tree, because of the way he is.

Charges against alleged white supremacists are tossed by a California judge for the second time (apnews.com)

For the second time in five years, federal charges against alleged members of a violent white supremacist group accused of inciting violence at California political rallies were dismissed by a federal judge who found they were selectively prosecuted....

meyotch,

Calling a highly educated person in a profession that requires that education ‘street smart’ denigrates that education and that person’s accomplishments.

meyotch,

Here’s one scenario: Go to work with a partial charge, charge during the day using excess solar production when electricity is super cheap, drive home fully charged, sell some power to the grid during peak domestic use hours, keep enough to safely get back to work, repeat.

To Change Everything, an anarchist appeal (crimethinc.com)

If you could change anything, what would you change? Would you go on vacation for the rest of your life? Make fossil fuels stop causing climate change? Ask for ethical banks and politicians? Surely nothing could be more unrealistic than to keep everything the way it is and expect different results....

meyotch,

“Our enemies are not human beings, but the institutions and routines that estrange us from each other and from ourselves.“

meyotch,

How about you define your own belief system and let others choose their own words?

meyotch,

Double rubble is what the Hamburglar said, right? It’s enough to make a headline writers day.

This means we get to do more science. There’s surely a queue of groups who want to analyze the samples for various reasons. Hopefully this means more groups get access to some. I can’t wait for the studies to start coming out.

meyotch,

Schröedinger’s Christian: simultaneously wonderful and just the worst.

meyotch,

It’s literally in the summary

meyotch,

I didn’t mean to be curt either. My reply could easily be seen as dickish, so my apologies. But yes in the USA school board elections are ‘non-partisan’, but any keen observer can glean the partisan leaning of a candidate. It looks as if in this case one must be even keener than usual.

meyotch,

Ha!

I promise I am not a bioacoustician, I just have an eclectic background.

This article covers an experiment that suggests plants may have a type of vision. It’s a good example of a tantalizing finding that demands to be explained.

meyotch,

As a follow up to comment on your posted article, it’s a very compelling summary. I wonder if the greatest obstacle to advancement of plant psychoacoustics is our lack of patience. Plants operate on a very different timescale and we are such hasty primates.

meyotch,

That’s one of those words one just hopes you get a chance to use one day. This is your day!

Sorry for the bogus link. Try the above link and if that fails the title yields one exact result on google scholar. Ecology and Evolution of Bird Sounds.

The example of a hummingbird emitting sounds higher than it can hear is so fascinating. Mere artifact or evolution?

meyotch,

I’m going to try to revive a dead post by commenting on my own experiences playing. Based on the upvotes, others seem interested too. Let’s see if it works

I had a good crew of friends while in grad school in the 00’s. This was a super smart crew of bio-nerds so when I heard about this game on Slashdot (or maybe Memepool, can’t be sure) I knew I had the right crowd to try it.

It was a successful session and we developed a lot of those inside jokes that tight social groups do.

I tried again years later with another set of friends and it fell flat. Not a disaster but it was quickly abandoned for lack of general interest. This was also a crowd of high-wattage personalities so i still wonder what the difference was.

That’s what prompted my question. Just seeking scene setting tips that might increase the chance the game goes well again.
