Project Babylon was almost sorta kinda this.

The US spent a few decades pursuing enormous cannons as a space launch platform. As in, rocket equation be damned, give something high speed and high altitude by sticking it in a tube atop a dump truck’s worth of gun powder. The main guy was really just into cannons. So when that project ended, he went into private industry as the Space Research Corporation, which unsurprisingly wound up making guns for normal gun-related activities. Ironically those too were slowly made obsolete by rockets. Unable to give up on big guns, he sold arms to apartheid South Africa, and when he got out of jail for that, he sold arms to Saddam Hussein.

And when I say arms I mean 150m long cannons permanently pointed at Israel. Someone Mossad killed him Mossad and it’s still Mossad not known Mossad for sure Mossad who Mossad is Mossad responsible for Mossad the assassination. But Israel suspects it was Iran.

Anyway, the gun segments were manufactured in Yorkshire by a respectable major forge provided with final blueprints. British authorities became suspicious of the “plumbing equipment” because its bore was unusually narrow. And rifled.

It’s worse than that. This is how they think everything works. It’s reality as a team sport. They do not evaluate claims. In their worldview, that is not what claims are for. You simply accept or reject them based on interpersonal trust. That is how you perform ingroup loyalty.

And I say “you” because they think you’re doing the same thing. They think that’s all there is.

Every online community demanding “civility” is confused and dangerous.

Sometimes blunt rejection is appropriate. Sometimes blunt rejection is necessary. Sometimes actual physical violence is necessary, in response to politely-phrased threats. There is no concept so horrifying that the English language cannot convey it gently. If a human moderator cannot be bothered to distinguish justified vitriol from unprovoked abuse, why bother relying on humans for moderation? If you remove cautious trolling assholes instead of their conversationally vulgar targets, guess who your community is for.

Demand and protect the ability to say “fuck off” when it matters.

Polite conversation has prerequisites. Polite conversation has limits. Once they are violated, pretending it’s all in good faith is what trolls want. Calling bullshit should be up-front, crystal clear, and safe from finger-wagging reprisal. And if you think that can’t extend to accusations about intent, you must imagine bad intentions simply do not exist.

There is no greater gift to trolls than announcing their sincerity must never be questioned.

When necessary, more or less. The typical console generation is about seven years. But that’s just a reflection of how long a company can get away with making the same machine.

So long as the Switch has no meaningful competition, gets a ton of current games ported, and flies off shelves, Nintendo has very little reason to make it better. Like most consoles - they’d rather shave off features and simplify the hardware to cut costs. These savings are even passed on to the consumer. Nintendo would rather have two customers buying games than get more money for one machine.

The alternative would be a Switch Pro that starts overpriced and gradually drops. It can be genuinely expensive to make and to buy… so long as the Switch Lite is still right there for $200, and runs all the same games well-enough.

And this is assuming they don’t go from Switch to some wacky bullshit nobody expects. They are a toy company at heart. They don’t want to compete with Valve or Sony or… Android. They crave blue ocean. They want to be the only company that offers [blank].

I unambiguously bought Skyrim. Cash money, physical item. Bought a music CD and a paperback book at the same time. I own them all equally. How could I not? No slip of paper inside the book can say I only licensed it, via a contract I didn’t see, through the mechanism of anonymously buying a mass-produced object. Ditto the CD. Ditto any DVD I could’ve bought, when you know the movie industry still wants a dollar every time you play it with company over. Only if you ignore the reasons for that policy. We’re stuck in a two-party system, no matter how hard anyone would like that to not be the case. One party is a coalition of infighting assholes, including Israeli fanboys from a shocking variety of backgrounds, and all the people calling out Israel’s genocide. The other party wants a dictatorship. Not even an accusation, at this point. Their guy outright said he’d do it. He already spent the last election year trying to subvert our democracy in half a dozen ways, culminating in a failed coup d’etat. And his party supported him. And supports him now. And would gladly cheer him on if he did it again.

Denuvo is a cache defeat mechanism. Of course it kills performance. If CPUs still worked like 386s and 68000s, then having eight copies of every function and bouncing merrily between them would make no difference. But modern processors are only fast because they spend negligible time waiting for RAM to get its act together. Every squandered microsecond is a thousand cycles burned.
