Finished "Translation State" by Ann Leckie, a nominee for Best Science Fiction for Goodreads in 2023.

I came into it without having any knowledge of the Imperial Radch trilogy and it works as a standalone book. It's a bit of a space opera, a bit of a fairly predictable & angsty love story, and a bit of political intrigue. It's kind of a bit of everything and I think that's why I liked it but didn't love it. 4/5 stars. #Bookstodon

Waiting on my grocery order to be brought to the car and everything is FUBAR, severely understaffed and lagging. Everyone is angry.

I’d be mad too, but am instead enjoying the absolutely incandescent stream of profanities coming from the redneck lady next to me. She can’t find the right person to yell at, and keeps sending her hapless husband on sorties to try to get things moving. He wanders around, holds his arms up in despair, and returns unsuccessfully to be scolded for his ineffectiveness.

People are absolutely polarized on whether they loved or hated this 2023 Booker Prize winner. I loved it, but I listened to the excellently performed audiobook, so I was spared the criticisms of excessively lengthy paragraphs and non-obvious dialogue demarcations.

As for the story, the slide into a totalitarian state and the heart-wrenching repercussions for an ordinary family ensnared in the fallout is really well done. It is brutal. #bookstodon

While looking for something at the hardware store, we parked the cart and wandered a few feet away. And in doing so, managed to have two(!!) shopping carts swiped from us. The first was still empty, so I can’t be too upset. But someone took the time to unload a half dozen items from the second in order to abscond with it. I’m more amazed than angry, but my daughter is exactly the opposite. 😤🤬

As a kid, I always found it odd that Mister Rogers would change his shoes and cardigan when coming or leaving home.

But here I am, returned from a haircut and immediately changing back out of my jeans & shoes and back into sweatpants & flips.

He was a genius.

Horrible start (again), but if any of the big chances were finished (Nunez & DIaz), we'd be far less concerned about the chronic issues in the squad (tepid starts & a lack of creativity moving the ball forward from the back).

The difference really boils down to finishing and fouls called (9-3).

The last 10 minutes were really good. There is reason for hope. #LFC

I’ve been thinking about the argument that fatigue is one of the primary reasons for the recent struggles for #LFC

I think Klopp has rotated the squad far more than in recent years. But then it occurs to me that the reason he’s done so is because of injuries rather than the luxury of choice. While this is a deep squad, it has suffered from wildly different player combinations (particularly in defense) which are often prone to miscommunication and a lack of chemistry.

Dark moment for #LFC, but there is still some good to be found:

Gakpo looks rejuvenated. He played well throughout a tough night.

Jota got minutes & had some impact. Still rough, but an immediate boost.

If you had to pick a game to lose in the dying embers of the season, this is one of two you'd take. Not by this margin, though.

At some point, even with underperforming xG by more than a full goal in 4 of the last 5 games, the goals will come.

This was to be a rebuilding year. We forget.

Cold & windy! On this track, the wind always comes in parallel to the straightaways. One corner is cut into a hillside, so often you suffer the headwind but never get to profit from the tailwind. And yet, tonight both were present in force!

I just successfully helped with advanced chemistry homework -- not because I remembered any chemistry, mind you, but because I was calm, employed a bit of logic, and know how to search online.

I'm sure the kids hate having a dad who remembers nothing, knows nothing, and yet somehow calmly and swiftly solves their problems and scuttles their rage in under 5 minutes.

I don’t think I was even 50 years old + 1 day when I got a text message from my pharmacy telling me I should schedule a shingles vaccination. 💉🤪

Today I had the first of two shots and I could DEFINITELY feel the fatigue. 💀🪦 I had intended to run last night, but thunderstorms wrecked that plan. So, tonight it was, even knowing that it might be rough. Any run completed is a good run. #Running

Saw this beauty through the window, a 4-1/2 foot (~137 cm) Central Ratsnake (Pantherophis Alleghaniensis). It climbed up a bush near the corner of the house and I was able to get some close ups. I didn’t see a birds nest, so I suspect it was preparing to lay in wait for prey to ambush, which I’ve read they sometimes do. #wildlifephotography #WildLife #snake
