It's not so much that I'm surprised that SPI's Dallas RPG was made, as it is that I can't understand why they didn't go with Fantasy Island or Love Boat instead. Both feature persisting DM-like characters with an ever-changing cast of other characters.
@RogerBW I've never heard of Hillfolk, but I'll check it out. See I would've thought players would be very limited in the Dallas storyline whereas Fantasy Island in particular has so many possibilities. Even the theme that it's your fantasy lends itself to an imagination-driven RPG.
@molotovcockatiel Sorry, I should have sad DramaSystem, Robin Laws's interpersonal-conflict-based game, of which Hillfolk was the first instantiation. Not to my taste but it feels as though it's exploring a similar space: relentlessly un-fantastic setting (apart from the wealth porn), conflicting agendas leading to drama.
Forgive me I'm not a BGG power user, but did someone really give this person $420 for their stupid comment in the Charles S. Roberts Awards thread? #Wargames#BoardGames#Wargaming#HexAndCounter
@molotovcockatiel@zrzz@Asmoridin It's become devalued over the years - there's not much to "spend" it on and they hand you a few hundred for supporting at end of year - but back in the day when you could only get it by making the site better it was regarded as quite significant.
@molotovcockatiel@evildrganymede If you could reliably finish a game in half an hour, I'd like it more. But as Phil Reed used to say, if people want to buy it, are they meant to leave money on the table?
I put down some of my thoughts on Generative AI in Wargames, a topic that really got under my skin thanks to a Facebook post. Please join me as I lose friends and followers. https://molotovcockatiel.com/generative-ai-in-wargames/
Watching a vid about The Battle of Jaxartes by Kings & Generals and it shows the leader of the Saka/Scythians being someone named Carthasis. Everything else I've found (not much) says the leader was Satraces.
Not a fan of AI in its current state, but I have found one use for ChatGPT: Answering inane questions on job applications like, "Why do you want to work for us?"
Start and end of the Planeteers era of John Butterfield’s “SpaceCorp” by @gmtgames.bsky.social. Got extremely lucky in that era with the card draws. Next up: Starfarers era.
