I'm late but just heard Steve Albini died at 61. Genuinely bummed, he recorded many of my favorite albums and taught me a lot about music production. He also told the truth about the music industry and suffered the consequences.

check out his youtube, it's full of useful tips https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mrdd5-ehb8

    The professors who wrote these books talk about "highly engaged partisans" who inhabiit certain media ecosystems.

    People in these environments are susceptible to misinformation because emotion-laden views are reinforced by people on "their side."

    They also represent a small portion of the population.

    The authors argue that they are given too much attention in both mainstream and social media because they are so vocal.

    I am afraid I spend too much time responding to the memes they repeat.

    Wrong: How Media, Politics, and Identity drive our appetite for misinformation, by Dannagal Goldwaithe Young.

    yes, and they are very easy to spot, of course the fox news watcher lives in their own world, but the MSNBC viewer exibits a lot of the same behavior -- i would argue MSNBC has become more like fox over the years adopting even their paranoid conspiratorial thinking, -- how many times i've been called a russian bot by these types is impossible to count even tho I also spend a lot of time bashing Putin. . . yes better to just ignore them

    I want less server blocking here, but there are at least 26k servers on the fedi. ~1500 block poast while ~100 block mastodon.social. I want a norm of only blocking servers that freely host users who are assholes to other users (thus making the fedi less welcoming overall) but remember that there's a history here and reasons why this culture exists. It's opening up but please be considerate.

    Glad this tool exists but can we make it even better:
    https://fba.ryona.agency

    mook,
    @mook@possum.city avatar

    @wjmaggos

    that link you posted uses a tool hosted on kiwifarms who are notorious bigots / cyberstalkers who torment people until they kill themselves, I'm assuming you're just naive about that

    I also gotta ask why you want less blocking?

    I would make a case that blocking large instances like mastodon.social are good for the network as it allows smaller instances more visability, MS also federates with Meta which is evil and a threat to the fediverse itself

    while I don't think you should fediblock i.e. publicking call for collective blocking of an instance without good reason, on an individual level instances and users can block whoever they want for whatever reason they want, and that's a good thing, it minimizes conflict and increases visability for everyone else not blocked, it creates a more robust, more decentralized network, lightens the server load of individual instances, and makes the experiences of individual instances more unique. You can't possibly communicate with all the thousands of servers and millions of users on fedi, this is just as true on corporate networks where the algorythm decides who is more visable, here, you decide.

    mook,
    @mook@possum.city avatar

    @wjmaggos everyone can't talk to everyone tho, it's just not possible, maybe a few hundred to a few thousand a person can communicate with but certainly not millions , and things can still go viral without everything being in a giant pool, the nature of federated networks is it's that you have clusters at various degrees of distance and subdivision, this allows for greater diversity, but there are still links with the level of blocking there is ( for example if you block an instance, someone you federate with may not block them, so a meme or link may still circulate to you)

    I mean with the whole public square metaphor everyone doesn't talk to everyone either, you can talk to the people in your vicinity, you choose who to asosciate with, certainly there are more visible people, but with the person on the soapbox that's a one way mode of communication -- you seem to imagine the twitter based model of a handful of big accounts that everyone sees while there are millions of little people with a few dozen followers, that's not equitable or decentralized, it is in many ways a centralized one way channel of communication curated by a corporate algorithm, so here more people are visable to more people but there are few few mega-celebrities. ( even then you have george takei and robert reich etc. )

    one issue i'm having with is that with lists you can't tell it to 'hide from home timeline' which was very convenient because it allowed me to follow news bots without clogging up my home feed

    mook,
    @mook@possum.city avatar

    i'm gonna just have to unfollow a bunch of accounts or just not use the home timeline anymore because yeah these bots really clog shit up

    My main problem with ‘digital nomads’ is how, in search of ‘cheaper solutions’ to their own life problems in their own societies, they pretty much make life harder for the people from the nomad hotspots. There’s no sugar-coating this. Someone in Lisbon or Bali doesn’t easily have ‘a cheaper place’ to move to. I don’t think there’s an ethical way to do this, and legally it’s also such a fraught lifestyle. You’re one major illness or one global pandemic away from having to leave ‘your home’.

    Well, since Nelson Mandela is trending these days...from the archives: Mandela's Ethiopian passport. In 1962, Mandela toured Africa in search of support for the anti apartheid armed wing of the African National Congress.

    In Ethiopia, he completed 2 months of a course in guerrilla fighting & military leadership.

    Granted Ethiopian citizenship under his bogus identity as "David Motsamayi," Mandela masqueraded as a journalist. His fake profession is indicated on his passport in Amharic (ጋዜጠኛ).

    image/jpeg
    Mandela's Ethiopian passport. Top left reads "Empire of Ethiopia" along with insignia of the Ethiopian monarchy of the era. Underneath it reads in Amharic and in English: "To all whom it may concern. Greetings. We request the civil and military authorities of all friendly countries to allow the bearer to pass freely and without hindrance and to afford him every assistance of which he stands in need." Signature of Zewde Hailemariam, an Ethiopian government official at the time. Passport number: 8786. Name: David Motsamayi. Nationality: Ethiopian. The lower page: Profession: journalist. Birth: 18/7/1918, Bechuanaland (defunct British protectorate, now South Africa) Height: 1.78 Eye color: Brown Hair color: Black
