My most LA story is: the very first time I went, I got a place to stay at the back of someone’s house in North Hollywood. Pretty nice, not luxe. Nice people.

With every day that passed I began to wonder: were my hosts like, somewhat famous people?

I only knew for sure when I heard someone playing the piano and singing from the main house. “Take a look at my girlfriend / she’s the only one I’ve got”

So it was Sister Rosetta Tharpe's birthday.

She's had more coverage on the internet more recently, and that's damn good.

Okay, a few notes.

As a guitar nerd, let's look at her guitars:

In the 30s, she was using pickups in hollowbody guitars before the solidbody came around.

When the solidbody comes out, she's early in there. There are pics of her with a 54 Les Paul.

First models of Les Paul. The Stratocaster was only just out. The Broadcaster/Telecaster had only been out a coupla years.

Like I said, right out the front.
A lot of guitarists were still hanging onto their hollowbodies around this time.

Then there's the one ppl are used to seeing. A 1961 Les Paul Custom. Later called the SG, cause Les Paul didn't like em.

Sister Rosetta did.

Cause it gave her more freedom up and down the neck.

Which she uses here.

Oh, and watch her picking hand around the 1:22 mark, as she's singing a coupla notes, cause she's turning up the volume of that thing to get some boost. Cause that's how you got distortion/overdrive in them days.

Means the lady's about to shred.
