Anyone who has built a fully automated, continuously delivered managed infrastructure before wants to share the experience?

I would like to replace myself running terraform apply with GitHub Actions doing it, but never done before.

Obviously there is a little more to it than running that single command... It's a tiny team so we don't have to go crazy complicated either.

So I’ve been planning to do a ride from Berlin to Budapest (or Vienna) this May, but after 5 days of partially offroad in Hungary I have some doubts whether I want another week of Eastern European Offroads :D Any suggestions for a long gravel or cyclepath-only, mostly nature route not too far from Berlin or Budapest? (Also somewhere not too hot:)

@mariusor I know EV6 and riding it is on my bucket list, but I might want something that avoids bigger towns entirely. Something riverside might be a good idea..

Researching the architecture for the back-end for a greenfield mobile app.

One option is a "real time" database (Firestore, Couchbase, MongoDB Realm), where one gets a database slice two-way synchronized on the client.

In theory, all the client needs to do is to use CRUD operations on the local database and do reactive UI updates when the database changes.

But then I can't help "integration databases should be avoided" repeating in my head, of which this would be an extreme case.

More about integration databases by @mfowler here: https://martinfowler.com/bliki/IntegrationDatabase.html

So what should by stance about "real time" databases be?

Is this not only "serverless" but also "architectureless" therefore this is fine?

Is this something fine for rapid prototyping, maybe an MVP but nothing beyond?

Something fine for a single-client system but nothing beyond?

My 2+ decades of experience says there lies incredible long-term pain when committing to this "architectureless" architecture, but also see no compelling alternatives that give first-class back-end support for offline-first mobile applications.

Except for handrolled solutions of course.

Is it just me, or did recently kill video calls in on macOS? It used to work until a few weeks ago, now the call button isn't even there where it used to be. Works fine in Chrome. Time to convert my mom to ?

Sunday evening hack: a broken power jack on an old laptop.

Success, old laptop is back up and running. Despite it is from 2012, equipped with an Intel Core i3 processor and 4GB RAM, and was completely unusable (extremely slow) under Windows 7, it's an OK experience with Firefox and a minimal Linux desktop. \o/

Just learned about this trend of people filming themselves while being laid off and posting it on social media, some getting millions of views. I’m laughing my ass off, this is amazing:) (Not the layoffs but the way HR bullshit is surfacing publicly.) Go Gen Z!

This of course won’t prevent mass layoffs (often caused by irresponsible hiring) but at least might make the process more humane and transparent. Bullshitting is worse PR than admitting fuckup!

I accidentally learned that iOS now transcribes voicemail messages on the fly. Pretty cool, I will never have to pick up the phone for recruiters and sales calls again:)

mrc,
@mrc@mastodon.berlin avatar

@gernot No, this is a Hungarian SIM from Yettel. Is this something the carrier needs to support? I don’t even understand how it works, is the carrier recording and streaming to the device the same time? Or everything happens on the phone?

mrc, to Iceland
@mrc@mastodon.berlin avatar

I recently learned that one can take a #ferry from Denmark to #Iceland (2 days 1 way) and I am now spoiled and want to do a #Berlin-to-Iceland cycling trip, crossing off two, maybe three bucket list items. (Berlin-Denmark cycling trip, Iceland cycling trip, seeing an active volcano).

The ferry is rather pricey, about 1200 EUR round trip in a windowless double room. But I can do the rest dirtbag style to save some money :)

Now I should ideally find a companion. Anyone interested?

Now that I own a player again, I learned that there are still albums released on tape, occasionally. Too bad this one costs $60, worth more than the entire "music center" :D

Screenshot of Taylor Swift's Midnights album on Amazon, sold on CD, Vinyl and "Audio, Cassette" ($59.99).

@cdamian Neat, although I have no big ambitions with cassettes, you got me interested:) Will definitely try to buy something fresh on , maybe locally in Berlin or Budapest. I might even have a vintage somewhere!

I very recently realized that I might be experiencing the onset of a . And, no, it does not manifest in buying a sports car, neither in extramarital affairs with someone 20 years younger, and I am also not workaholic.

My symptom is wanting to spend all my time in doing all sorts of fun action. Cycling, hiking, canoeing, mountaineering, you name it. And now I'm thinking of getting into cross country skiing...
