“What the hell do the love letters of that old fraud H. P. Lovecraft have to do with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs?”

A slight departure for #NationalUnicornDay – the Hugo Award-winning novella “Equoid” by Charles Stross @cstross

Awesome story, though readers who are not familiar with the work of Charles Stross should be warned he deals in mildly humorous cosmic horror, and this work is no exception.
Warning: You will never be able to look at a unicorn the same again. 😂

How do my comrades feel about airports?

Planes?

What are your top tips?

@actuallyautistic

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic Airports in general are very predictable spaces, and the good ones are set up to be navigable by sleep deprived passengers with jetlag. I quite enjoy the predictability of the process, including making a sport out of dealing with irritations like security checkpoints as efficiently as possible.
Knowing how and why things are set up the way they are does help, and I've been a commercial aviation enthusiast for years as a result.

natalie_romana,
@natalie_romana@mastodon.nz avatar

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic For reference, when I'm travelling it's either short haul in Europe for work, or ultra long haul for visiting friends in NZ. There are minor differences in how I cope with either.

natalie_romana,
@natalie_romana@mastodon.nz avatar

@housepanther @theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic yeah, I'm not sure I can cope with the full 26 hours of sitting in economy involved in getting to NZ anymore, now that my chronic pain issues are getting worse with increasing age.
Guess I'll be saving up for the extortionate prices of a business class ticket if I ever want to go again.

Really excellent dual-author piece in the Nation on why separating 'types' of autism into different diagnoses is harmful to all autistic people.

https://www.thenation.com/article/society/autism-division/

natalie_romana,
@natalie_romana@mastodon.nz avatar

@ratcatcher @karawynn @actuallyautistic This point is really complicated. Since for starters, how do you measure intellectual disability? Many standard tests give confusing or downright incorrect results when taken by autistic people. Not to mention under what conditions were the tests taken? And then the whole "nonverbal = intellectual disability" thing which is a minefield.

@natalie_romana@mastodon.nz avatar

@ratcatcher @karawynn @actuallyautistic
If you correct for all of these, then my gut feeling is that it is a comorbidity, but not in the core of autism.

@Are0h Am I missing something obvious? I'd expect the following command to search the API of :

curl -X POST -H "Content-Type: application/json" -d '{"url": "shitposting"}' https://thebad.space/api/v1/search

Instead I get an actual HTML document.

natalie_romana,
@natalie_romana@mastodon.nz avatar

@philip @Are0h Opening the url in a browser shows they are moving to a new url?
https://tweaking.thebad.space/

@philip Yep, doing the same request using postman to https://tweaking.thebad.space/api/v1/search returns a json response object.

Hey peeps who are on HRT, I have a theory about our community in the Fedi. It seems to me that most of us are either what I call "Pandemic Boys and Girls" who started their transition during lockdown, or those of us who seem to be a few months in. I'm in that second group. It's like the pandemic started us off, but we didn't quite get there for some reason until recently. So let's do a little poll.

How long have you been on , or alternatively how long since your definitive egg crack?

natalie_romana,
@natalie_romana@mastodon.nz avatar

@Tweetfiction I'm missing an option for "Still on the waiting list to start HRT after foo years".
I'm definitely a Pandemic girl, but I'm only now getting close to the top of one of my many waiting lists for medical transition.

natalie_romana,
@natalie_romana@mastodon.nz avatar

@Tweetfiction that's fair. I'm autistic, so I tend to take poll options at face value. 🥰

My favorite part of maintaining structlog is when people complain/ragequit that structlog is “way too complicated to configure” when it’s actually stdlib logging which is complicated.

There’s a cognitive dissonance between “I want bespoke stdlib integration” and “I want things to be easy”. There’s literally nothing more I can do than documenting approaches—including fucking call graphs—and APIs to achieve that. None of the competing pkgs even TRIES to solve this.

natalie_romana,
@natalie_romana@mastodon.nz avatar

@hynek Your work on making that integration as simple as it can be is greatly appreciated.
I've come to appreciate it even more now that i'm trying to do the same with Apache Spark and AWS Glue logging. You've made creating a custom bound logger and log factory as easy as it can be. The complications are all in the logger you're trying to integrate with.

I was just thinking about how corporate meeting the discussions in the TNG Enterprise-D observation lounge were, and realised that there totally would have been a system for booking the lounge for meetings, and thinking it would have been hilarious to either:

  • See people coming on to the bridge and heading to the lounge for their weekly team meeting or...
  • Picard wanting to brainstorm with the bridge crew, and have to kick out another team who had booked 🤣

JRR Tolkien editing LOTR: wtf this sucks.

@Loukas I'm wondering if the forward to The Hobbit where he discusses at length his spelling choices was a later addition sparked by this event?

@Loukas Thanks for the check. I foolishly loaned my copies of the Hobbit and the LOTR to someone and I can't remember who so I couldn't look it up myself.
