@rolle Apple makes great hardware but I don't like iOS , too closed, too rigid, complete lock-in in Apple ecosystem.

@rolle Android because I want to feel in control. I can easily upgrade the default OS to a custom ROM without Google bloatware, customize it the way I want or am able to, because it's open source.

@rolle iPhone. I've seen more non-revertable updates introducing ui glitches and bricking life-critical diabetes apps on Android (1) than on iPhone (0)

@vyr @rolle I keep watching Linux phone options but nothing is functional enough yet, or really even close. In the meantime, Apple compromises my privacy the least.

@pesasa@mastodon.social avatar

@rolle As a Linux-guy I had Jolla/SailfishOS phones for years. Unfortunately it was often "uphill battle", because of missing support for useful apps. It had support for Android apps, but still some things missing. Notifications for Signal, "phone is rooted" for banking apps, layout quirk with parking app and so on.

iOS is a walled garden. All browsers are Safari. 🤮

I had LineageOS for some time, but banking was the problem with that too.

Android is currently least bad and it works.

pesasa,
@pesasa@mastodon.social avatar

@rolle For privacy, being more independent of "big players" etc. I really liked Jolla and SailfishOS, but it just didn't have enough momentum. 😿

pesasa,
@pesasa@mastodon.social avatar

@rolle Android also for open source software (from F-Droid).

Maybe the nastiest thing with Apple products is, that they work nicely together, but are pita to interact with other ecosystems. Same reason, why I never buy Samsung products again. I had Samsung watch with Samsung phone, but oh boy, when I switched phone to other brand.

Unfortunately most Android phones are either Samsungs or ChinaWare.

pesasa,
@pesasa@mastodon.social avatar

@rolle And then there is this sad thing.

I managed to get mine, but there are still many backers waiting for theirs.

Delivery postponed multiple times due to China covid lockdowns, factory ownership changes, hardware downgrades and so on, so on.

rolle,
@rolle@mementomori.social avatar

@pesasa What is that device? Looks cool.

pesasa,
@pesasa@mastodon.social avatar

@rolle It's "Astro Slide 5G Transformer" from Planet Computers.

A cool idea. However the Indiegogo campaign didn't go so well. It was started 2020 and just then the covid hit the world. Lots of problems with lockdowns, didn't get the designed chipsets and had to downgrade it, wait for 3 or more years made the hardware old on delivery. Linux support promised, but not so likely with that chipset.

And horizontal keyboard isn't that handy (with widescreen Android).

@rolle iPhone. No one but Apple makes a decently small high-end phone, but even if that wasn’t true, I just like different aspects of the of it: design, many high-quality apps that I’m just used to, works together with the Mac…

@rolle iPhone. Been on one from the start, but carried a Nexus 5 for eons as well.

I’ve decoupled my life from Google and, while I know alternate roms are a thing and I’ve used Lineage on Nexus devices, I don’t want the hassle. Android is no longer an option for me.

Daily driver Linux phone options don’t exist, and Jolla and Pine are nonstarters in the US (either software support or cell bands).

@rolle I‘m completely into the Apple ecosystem: Apple Watch Ultra, iPhone XS Max, iPad Pro, MacBook Air, 2 AppleTVs, 5 HomePods. Every family member with iPhone, iPad, MacBook. Once you’re there, it makes your life easier.

pnuk,

@rolle Currently Android, but was using iPhones until X came. For me they are pretty much the same. Mostly same games, same entertainment apps and alarm clock works the same. Cameras do have differences, but not that big for me.

@autiomaa@mementomori.social avatar

@rolle At least there are ways to have custom Android versions these days, even while those have other problems (as security updates might be missing from the "community forks" of Android).

Anyway, I do like iOS, but iPhone costs more than a monthly rent in the Helsinki area.

rolle,
@rolle@mementomori.social avatar

@autiomaa Not for this model. There are none. There's rumors no MSM will be available so no recovery for soft brick. Too risky. Also OnePlus 11 is too new model, no custom ROMs support it, yet at least, but maybe never.

perspiraattori,
@perspiraattori@mementomori.social avatar

@rolle I was Android/Windows Phone user before and an iPhone user since 2015.

Why iPhone? Because it just works.

I’m way deep in the Apple ecosystem with different apps (Notes, iCloud etc) and accessories (Airpods Pro and Airpods Max, Apple Watch) so my view is VERY biased. Oh, and of course my workhorse is Macbook Pro.

I just enjoy and have been enjoying the user experience so much for years that I don’t think I’ll be changing to any other platform anytime soon.

rolle, (edited )
@rolle@mementomori.social avatar

@perspiraattori I understand. I love Macs and been using them for a decade. I also use Linux. A Mac has more open ecosystem and Terminal where iPhone has not. iOS is much more closed infrastructure and that bugs me, because with iPhone I just have to trust the App store with everything. If there is no app available, I'm out of luck. Also there is no direct way to access the filesystem, I want to own my files and tinker with things. With an iPhone that is not possible.

On the other hand iPhone has that certain stability and furure-proof. It just works and won't slow down over time. Android apps have the tendency to deteriorate over time unless you purchase a flagship phone with four figures (although regular iPhone prices are also just that). Also Android operating systems vary and often contain A LOT of bloat, even for the cleaniest Android OSs have things like Google search widget preinstalled which I hate. If you don't like to do your cleaning yourself then Android is a pain. You can get the Android aesthetics very close to iOS with some work, but the older I get, the less I want to spend time in things like this.

I have to make an Excel where I compare things I need in between Android and iOS and then make the leap of faith with the choice. Too bad I purchased this new flagship Android phone two days ago... Maybe next one then.

jiinissi,

@rolle is this have or want? I've been using Linux on mobile for more years than android. Currently there's no really good options. Too large like PinePhone or super expensive unobtainium like Librem5. Got to limp on with an android phone until that changes. A new Nokia N900 would be wonderful. Same size as the old one, but full face display and modern flagship innards. That fxtec thing is too large =/

rolle,
@rolle@mementomori.social avatar

@jiinissi It's which one do you prefer. But I understand the complexity of the question, because literally purchased an Android phone two days ago (OnePlus 11) and I'm not perfectly happy with it so I'm thinking other options now to consider in the future.

kaukamieli,
