As someone without a “real” last name, let me tell you about all the stupid online forms that make me come up with fake names all the time 😅.

@konstantin @veronica oh my, this makes me wonder why Han Solo had no problems getting his name registered with the Empire in “Solo” xD

The Introduction to Machine Learning course at ETH Zurich has over 1300 students.

The Introduction to Deep Learning course at TUM has over 1800 students.

Are massive courses like this a very recent phenomenon or did those exist a decade or so ago already?

neuronenstern,
@neuronenstern@mas.to avatar

@chrisoffner3d I remember some colleagues of mine taking the Economics 101 courses at my alma mater and they used to be very massive (~1.4k)

Is there a decent sideways charging stand that everyone's using to test iOS 17 StandBy mode?

neuronenstern,

@_Davidsmith @marcoarment just to be clear you mean it’s fine, right? Or is it rather “ultra-fine”.. ?🤪

It seems several boxes of my favourite ice cream have somehow found their way into my shopping bag. I have no explanation for this bizarre happenstance. I suspect there was a disruption in space-time and the barrier between universes had weakened momentarily, allowing for the transfer of matter from an adjacent universe...

neuronenstern,
@neuronenstern@mas.to avatar

@konstantin for some unrelated reason the supermarket lately charged you more than they should have… strange world

Dug out my two Sony Mavica digital cameras. It’s still bonkers to me that they use floppy drives for storage. It’s an alternate universe that I could live in honestly.

@paulrickards for all the things that don’t work nowadays it’s very refreshing to hear a story of something that „just works“

Could you land an airliner in an emergency?

neuronenstern,
@neuronenstern@mas.to avatar

@daniel I know that this is not representative but kind of interesting that 45% of your bubble is confident landing an airliner :-)

"[T]he design changes and brightness-mitigation operations that introduced for Generation 2 satellites effectively reduces their luminosity. Minis are actually fainter than all three models of the smaller Gen 1 spacecraft. However, the full-size Gen 2 satellites may present a greater challenge."

https://skyandtelescope.org/astronomy-news/the-newest-and-largest-starlink-satellites-are-also-the-faintest/

neuronenstern,
@neuronenstern@mas.to avatar

@JohnBarentine at least they are doing something, but honestly having thousands of those in orbit it’s still a catastrophe. They should be required to rather present a plan to remove/replace all Gen 1 satellites..

It's wild to me that there's currently so much panic & fear about what might do to "destroy" humanity, yet - at the same time - so little attention to the way that human behaviors are already, knowingly, putting billions of people & global biodiversity at tremendous risk. 🌍

neuronenstern,
@neuronenstern@mas.to avatar

@Sheril I agree, this is super frustrating to me. I think one tricky part about this is the stochastic and slow consequences of climate change to the individual. Thus it becomes difficult for our primate brains to wrap our heads around it. As for AI: it is a very fast-paced research topic that is medially very present.. ironically the huge systems that are trained in large server farms contribute to climate change again 😐

I just read about the backstory for the .zip and .mov TLDs and Google's thinking seems totally orthogonal to reality:

Google marketers say the aim is to designate “tying things together or moving really fast” and “moving pictures and whatever moves you,”

.mov is a movie, and .zip is an archive, and no amount of Google marketing can change that. Moreover, yes, black holing these domains sounds like a good idea.

https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2023/05/critics-say-googles-new-zip-and-mov-domains-will-be-a-boon-to-scammers/

neuronenstern,
@neuronenstern@mas.to avatar

@konstantin totally agree. Just wondering whether google with chrome is powerful enough to prevent effective black holing
