I think they genuinely want Trump and for him cause generational suffering (judge appointments) which in their mind will eventually lead to reforms decades down the road. They are perfectly willing to sacrifice people now for that chance later.

I believe AI will lead to more competition which will drive prices down for industries that require far fewer actual people. When an opportunity to make money presents itself, competition will thrive.

Ssshhhhh… the toktok ban is ONLY about preventing speech!

Uncommitted voters are not apathetic. The Democratic party is (www.theguardian.com)

What happens in November is up to Biden – it will not be the fault of the protest voter if Trump is elected. The questions remain: does the Democratic party fear Trump as much as we do? And does it value its voters enough to shift away from an approach to the onslaught in Gaza that a majority of Democratic voters are against?

It won’t be the protest voters fault of Trump is elected but it would be something they could have prevented. Four more years of radical conservative judge appointments would create generations of degradation of women and minority group rights.

So then protest voters are just wasting time by not voting since their protest doesn’t matter?

In the context of a stand up routine… Not official speech.

They are free to sell to non American companies just fine as long as the new company is not ultimately controlled by the Chinese government.

nexguy,
@nexguy@lemmy.world avatar

The u.s. still wouldn’t control the algorithm even if bytedance sold because they are not required to sell to a u.s. company. As long as the new company isn’t controlled by the ccp(or probably also russ, n Korea, iran) the u.s. doesn’t care who owns it.

nexguy,
@nexguy@lemmy.world avatar

U.S. wouldn’t be taking over… it could be a New Zealand company for all the u.s. cares.

The can sell to non-us companies no problem. Doesn’t have to involve Wallstreet.

nexguy,
@nexguy@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not saying they would, just saying it doesn’t have to involve Wallstreet.

Non-sensationalized summary from the article:

Although Section 702 authorizes electronic surveillance of non-US people overseas, the official summary of the reauthorization bill notes that "information about US persons may incidentally be acquired by this type of surveillance and subsequently searched or ‘queried’ under certain circumstances.”

The reauthorization bill imposes some new limits on data collection. For example, FBI personnel must obtain prior approval from an FBI supervisor or attorney before making queries about US people. But this provision has an exception allowing such queries without prior approval if “the query could assist in mitigating or eliminating a threat to life or serious bodily harm.”

There are also some new limits on queries involving elected US officials, political candidates, political organizations, media organizations, journalists, and religious groups. There is a prohibition on “the involvement of political appointees in the approval process for such politically sensitive query requests,” and a requirement that the FBI director "establish consequences for noncompliant querying of US person terms, including zero tolerance for willful misconduct.”

They are not banning the content type that tiktok provides, they are banning the foreign authoritarian government control of American user information. If Bytedance Sells tiktok to a business in a non authoritarian state then they no longer care.

Record numbers in the US are homeless. Can cities fine them for sleeping in parks and on sidewalks? (apnews.com)

The justices on Monday will consider a challenge to rulings from a California-based appeals court that found punishing people for sleeping outside when shelter space is lacking amounts to unconstitutional cruel and unusual punishment....

@nexguy@lemmy.world avatar

20 seconds on Google. The US government estimated 200k to 500k homeless in 1987 though this is criticized as a gross underestimate as they did not record it as well as they do today. Regan policies were responsible for a dramatic increase in the mid 80s.

nexguy,
@nexguy@lemmy.world avatar

The chances of a person being homeless in the mid 80s is much higher than today.

Most table saw accidents happen because of a lack of riving knife. Use that and the blade guard and your chances of losing a finger drop dramatically.
