It has begun. I sat my wife down to watch the first Fast and Furious film together. It's important to start at the start to see how far the franchise has come.

Hey crowd: what's your favourite wilderness exploration rule set? I'm tinkering with mine for my game and I'm still not fully satisfied. Trying to strike a balance between fairness, variety, and enjoyment is a TOUGH design challenge. Different players at the same table have different tolerances, too.

I've really never run a classic dungeon crawl. My first game as a player was a dungeon (4e's Keep in the Shadowfell) and as much as that edition and module left much to be desired, I feel nostalgic for it.
If a guy was planning to run a short dungeon crawl with a goal length of 4-6 sessions, what would you suggest?
Extra data points:

  • I'll likely use TBH or OSE
  • I'm not wild about tons of puzzles, but can tolerate a few
  • A fun overarching story is a great bonus

I don't have the time or brainpower right now but I've got the itch to revive one of my unfinished coding projects. It's between making a fediverse bot, making a NN RTS browser game, and making a browser based blob evolution sim.
I'm not gonna make any of these, but which one should I not make least

My West Marches game is DOA and I'm feeling blue about it. It wasn't a good fit for my friend group and it's been hard to get other folks who I already vaguely know and trust to play nice. I've had three invitations to play go by without any response (save for my brother, who is always down for my nonsense and to whom I'm eternally grateful).
Please tell me about games you've run that didn't pan out. It would help soothe my mind.

I've been suffering something akin to writer's block for ttrpgs lately. I'm feel like I'm grasping at straws trying to come up with some compelling pitch for a short-form campaign. I had high hopes for my west-marches game, but after that failed to catch I've been trying to find something that feels new and original and worthy of 5-8 sessions. I can't figure out what that might be, though.

I have finished watching the show. I enjoyed it! It was... fine, if not phenomenal.

I have some questions I'm wondering if anyone has answers to that I will put behind a spoiler tag.

Oh damn, I have just had a REVELATION regarding my West Marches game. I felt like there was a gap I could not figure out how to fill in the setting that justified more dungeon-crawling and danger. By gum, I've got it!! Something that lets me pepper the map with dungeon-like stuff that I had not considered before, and another genre of weird monsters.

On a bit of a whim I picked up and the dice to go with it. I know custom dice is a contentious topic but I personally like the idea and am excited to try it.
That being said, I'm coming to the system cold. I'm working through the rulebook but it's 200+ pages so I'm having trouble keeping it all in my head. Any good resources out there for learning the system? Cheat sheets, actual plays (that adhere fairly closely to the rules), blog posts, etc?

I sidle up behind my wife and run my hand along the small of her back. I whisper in her ear.
"After kiddo goes to bed tonight..."
"Yeah?"
"...let's cuddle up on the couch..."
"Uh huh?"
"..and watch The Fast And The Furious: Tokyo Drift"

I can't see her face, but she sighs heavily (I must assume from anticipation)

I'm doing kind of a mashup of and . I'm trying to do LESS of this stuff in my regular games, so I'm scratching the itch this way instead.
Also, boy howdy. I forgot drawing is HARD. And inking is even worse! I think this will be good exercise.

My wife showed me the "And I Got A Robe" SNL skit tonight and like... way to put the fear of God into me. I don't THINK I've done that this year, but I am absolutely powerless to change it at this point.

I sometimes struggle with blogging. The blogs that interest me are ttrpg advice blogs, written by much smarter people than myself. I have my own blog which I enjoy using, but I often feel that I should also be producing ttrpg advice. However, while I think about ttrpgs a lot, I play very infrequently and don't have that much to say about it!
I instead usually write about my campaign. I'm trying to give myself permission to do so, even if the posts aren't useful to others. It's just for fun!

Hey, folks: how do your games start? Do your characters talk? Do you dive right into whatever travel procedure you've established? What's the actual first 10-15 minutes of play involve in a campaign of that style?

As a reaction to enjoying the Fallout show I made the inadvisable decision to reinstall . I've played that game so much the corners are all rounded off so to spice it up I've decided to play on survival difficulty without ever spending a level-up.
I'm at level 12 and I'm discovering that this might just be impossible. Nothing other than the level up are off the table, so I may have to start cheesing the economy to just buy some legendary gear. Otherwise I think this playthrough is sunk.

Soliciting more advice! This time about NPCs.
My feeling is that West Marches games benefit from being outside of civilization and safety. Danger is the whole point. So it can be difficult to justify the existence of non-hostile NPCs in that setting without undermining the challenges upon which the whole format hinges.

folks: I'm looking for a good supply of maps that would work for a long-forgotten city in a steaming jungle. I really just want the maps - I can make a normal dungeon map myself, but I'm less confident in above-ground ruined cities.
Any suggestions? I'm looking at Ruins of Adventure and Dwellers of the Forbidden City (gonna grab the pdfs online) but if you can think of anything that fits the bill please let me know!
