One of the reasons for the rejection of is that it is as much (if not more so) about what technology CANT and SHOULDNT do as it is about what technology can do. It’s the Jeff Goldblum character in Jurassic Park of the sciences. This disgusting fantasy of limitless growth and the promises of infinite pleasure come the singularity is the soma. Is the opiate. Is the spectacle.

@geography instead of rejected I should have said perverted. Obviously we live in a cybernetic society (even before
electrical technology this is true as subjugation is the oldest technology we know). But what we dont live in is a society where people are educated in cybernetics and taught to reason about the systems in which they engage (and how to affect them, stop them, create new ones entirely!).

Hard pills to swallow: YouTube/instagram/TikTok IS the new HyperCard. Brutal pill to swallow actually. Give me http://worrydream.com/refs/diSessa%20-%20Boxer%20-%20A%20Reconstructible%20Computational%20Medium.pdf !!

@hugoestr when I think about it if we had internet when hypercard was a thing it would probably have been used for just sharing memes. That said they probably would have been more like choose-your-own-adventure point and click style memes?

I made a mean toot about but I deleted it. Even though you are old and clunky I still respect you and the labor that has gone in to building and maintaining you. If it annoys me that much I might have to leave my lisp castle for the trenches.

    I’m starting to be old enough to have some confidence that my obsessions will be cyclical rather than sequential. It’s ok to let something go for a while; I’ll be back to go deeper later.

    Well, now that the ancient computers that I don't care about so much are off to Cambridge Computer Museum, it's time to give some tender loving care to the ones I do care about.

    So this is serial number 509... but serial number 509 of what?

    nil,
    @nil@functional.cafe avatar

    @simon_brooke BBC micro variant?

    nil,
    @nil@functional.cafe avatar

    @simon_brooke Did I also have to say Acorn? Only thing throwing me is the cheat sheet thing at the top - I have never seen that before. And it looks like it is missing the black/dark grey plastic overlay/housing that goes around the keys and over the lights... But also the keyboard is stand alone and not part of the computer... is it an Acorn/BBC Master Compact??

    nil,
    @nil@functional.cafe avatar

    @simon_brooke Given that it is a 6 digit numerical serial number starting with a 0 then it means ICL manufactured this BBC Micro. (and the fact the sticker looks exactly like the one on the site) so it is 000509 of 099999. https://bbcmicro.computer/serial-numbers

    @simon_brooke It's glorious! One of my great regrets is that my first programming gig was a council job in manchester UK and my first task was to "clean out" the old computer lab. I threw away so many beautiful pieces of retro history. At the time I had no idea as I am an american and only knew commodore/atari etc. Some nights I wake up in a cold sweat thinking about the fact I may have even thrown away a transputer.

    I'm getting to learn in my new job, and its kind of the coolest thing ever. Highly recommend getting yourself a copy for your birthday (by which I mean give yourself a day to learn to play with it, because its free + )

    Can't believe I never knew about this as a neo-situationist in my 20s. If it were to include its power would be frightening 👀

    Saw that post about http://cosy.com/ which is an on top of a - right up my alley. I scroll down and see he is using his APL dialect to disprove climate change. It was sort of cool to experience what being into qanon must be like because for a minute I was like “damn… maybe? I mean it’s APL!”. is a hell of a drug.

    nil,
    @nil@functional.cafe avatar

    @monkey1 yeah he doesn’t seem to be refuting the observed data but rather creating predictive models where it is within expected range. Telling that to people in Arizona should be comforting.

    “Is all the world just chans and processes”

    I sing this to myself every time I start reducing things to pi-calculus. Which is a habit of mine. But I know how obnoxious hyper-reduction can be so I largely keep it to myself.

    My replay of shining force 1 is going well. Just got Bleu and about to fight Cain. I am powering through with gong as I remember him being good once promoted. Haven’t played it since it first came out and I beat it over a long weekend because it was a rental! I thought you couldn’t promote characters til level 20 so not sure how that’s going to affect things.
