"Hard times are coming, when we’ll be wanting the voices of writers who can see alternatives to how we live now, can see through our fear-stricken society and its obsessive technologies to other ways of being, and even imagine real grounds for hope. We’ll need writers who can remember freedom — poets, visionaries — realists of a larger reality."

This may very well be the most useless book I have ever written, and I don't even know why I did. I guess it is still better than getting drunk in a bar.
Anyway, it defines the programming language formally in terms of basic functions (zero, successor, identity, mu) and naive set theory. I have no idea why anybody would read such a book. Maybe you can give me some hints? :)
Or, in case you want to prove me wrong: http://t3x.org/t3x/0/formal.html

alriiiiight! @paulrickards just wrote up this fantastic tutorial on setting up your classic mac to connect to the global Appletalk network (do we have a name for this franken-net yet?)

once you're online, PM me your public IP so you can be added to our network. my Zone is "dialup.cafe" - feel free to add it to your zone list.

Important: dialup.cafe is using Network Range 20-29.

This essay from @jenniferplusplus is very good, and very important.

It’s good enough and important enough that I’m just going to QFT the heck out of it here on Mastodon until I annoy you into readying the whole thing.

This essay isn’t the last word on AI in software — but what it says is the ground level for having any sort of coherent discussion about the topic that isn’t all hype and panic.

Here it is: the One Weird Thing that people who aren’t programmers (or are bad programmings) just don’t understand about writing software. This is it. If you miss this, you’ll miss what LLMs can and can’t do for software development.

Day 26: Bama football

Q: OK fine! There's a lot of racism! But we can't do anything about it! You can't change hearts and minds! I've flipped from denial to helplessness! Talking about racism depressed me and makes me feel bad, because we can't do anything about it! So, can you stop talking about it?

A: No, we won't stop talking about it. Yes, we can do something about it. Let's look at one specific example of a reduction in racism, driven by racists themselves! 🙂🙃

mekkaokereke, (edited )
@mekkaokereke@hachyderm.io avatar

@paulcox Yes. Because racism is a lie that's much easier to maintain with a little distance. There were at least some Alabama players whose first sustained exposure to a real live Black person was on that team. At least a few of them became less racist as a result of those encounters.

In general, having close Black coworkers does a lot to reduce racism.

Which is part of why there is less anti-Black sentiment among working class white folks, than wealthy white folks.🙂🙃

Seriously. Much less.

The discoverability of the web platform is terrible. Compare the experience of using browser devtools (without googling or stackoverflow!) to figure out how to use, say, SVG, with the experience of just browsing through implementors in a Smalltalk system. Everything you need to know is already in the Smalltalk system; roughly nothing you need to know is available through the browser devtools.
