I developed a dislike to another category of , in addition to flowers. For context, I consider shooting flowers to be the cheapest way to look like you're doing something: they always come out good.

So another one is birds shot with a long focus. You don't need skill, you need a huge-ass, expensive lens and a bird filling up the entire frame right in the center. You're pretty much guaranteed sharp focus with terrific bokeh, and birds are pretty already. Not interesting!

@simon “The best way to get really good at anything is to do that thing on a regular basis, thoughtfully, and with the goal of doing it slightly better every time.” — that’s an example of a process goal (as opposed to an outcome goal). I’ve seen a lot of process vs outcome goals in endurance training, here’s a bit of info on that https://www.trainerroad.com/blog/5-useful-process-goals-to-motivate-your-winter-cycling-training/ One of my last year’s process goal was “300 days of journaling”, I’m now on 432 days streak.

I am reading the 2nd book (https://books.apple.com/us/book/a-desolation-called-peace/id1481077195) in the Teixcalaan series. Both the 1st and the 2nd book won Hugo awards. I enjoyed the 1st more. I haven’t finished the 2nd yet, but it feels more fragmented and appeals less to me. I do not enjoy the transitions between characters and how that changes pace as soon as you just got into rhythm of the current chapter. I think both worth reading, and I would wholeheartedly suggest reading the 1st book “A Memory Called Empire”. WDYT?

@brettcannon @jacob I recall you enjoyed the Murderbot series. I hope you find the Teixcalaan two-book series interesting too.

My bike friends: have any of y’all set up a wide-range 1x drop bar setup (aka “mullet”)? What did you use?

I’m musing over options for my Midnight Special, which currently is an 11-speed SRAM Rival, 11-42. Probably the best (and easiest) would be the newish SRAM Apex — and I wouldn’t hate wireless shifting — but that’s like $1500 or more, ooof.

I’m tempted by the Ratio kit which would be a lot less expensive but not sure I want to hack my shifter in that way.

noname,
@noname@norcal.social avatar

@jacob mullet is using mtb derailleur with road shifters. That’s largely not necessary now with gravel-specific offerings. I’ve setup 38 front and 11-42 with sram apex for my gravel bike and that worked well for me. I followed this awesome guide from 3T as a starting point. https://blog.3t.bike/2020/01/12405/gravel-bike-tech-gears-for-tough-climbs-part-1/

Over the past seven years of maintaining Flask et al, I've had to learn everything from scratch, with little help. I've somehow maintained a life outside of work and open source, despite the unbounded hours. I've put in so much effort to improve the projects, and then put in even more to keep extensions up to date. But there's always something for people to criticize, that I'm not doing well enough, that matters more than acknowledging everything I did do.

We want actionable error messages. Passive voice erodes their usefulness.

For example, “Failures were made somewhere in your CI pipeline” — passive, confusing, vague.

Instead, replace it with “Jenkywenkins made a whoopsie!” — clear, direct, active.

@n_to @shortridge Google has very useful courses Tech Writer 1&2 which are useful for any and all engineers. There’s also a section about useful errors :-) https://developers.google.com/tech-writing/error-messages

Somebody recommended a TV show “The Peripheral” and mentioned that they liked how book handled some of the story points better. So I read the book first, and now I am ready for the show. I watched a trailer and I already see what they meant “handled some of the story points better”. Anyway, I am excited about the show! Have you seen it? What do you think about it?

noname,
@noname@norcal.social avatar

@isagalaev 3 out of 5, which is somewhat typical for modern science fiction for me. But I’m picky. Rarely books maintain 4 and higher for me.

The Peripheral. The setting is good, the idea is engaging, but the execution after the 1/2 of the book is a bit I dare to say lazy. Not bad overall, I didn’t feel like I wasted my time, but I’d also won’t recommend unless some contex of that book comes up in a conversation.

noname,
@noname@norcal.social avatar

@isagalaev huh. I was trying to be very reserved in my judgment on off chance you enjoyed it 😅 For example, one of my friends enjoyed Blindsight by Peter Watts. The book has a very thoughtful setting, but the story didn’t capture me, and the writing felt a bit choppy. I didn’t enjoy it, I finished to be done with it, but I 100% would watch a movie, like this one (fan trailer) https://youtu.be/VkR2hnXR0SM and Peter Watts backstory/comments about the fan-trailer are pretty funny https://youtu.be/HW7_1J9clAA

@isagalaev Thnx. Doing great. She’s pretty hard on herself, but actually is driving great. Only a few hours of driving, but her wheel control is pretty nice, she’s looking where she’s going and she’s good with her technique unless she’s trying to do too much at once. She opted in to drive in a neighborhood today and she was smooth and fluid most of the time. She said “it was nice, less hectic and chaotic than with the instructor”. I’ll take that as a huge win.

Any books to read about teaching teens to drive?

noname,
@noname@norcal.social avatar

It's official now, my 16yo can legally drive (with me)! She completed mandatory 30h of online classes, passed written exam in DMV and endured 2h of a random driving instructor. Now all the paperwork is ready for her to drive. I am sure a good instructor would be better than me, but the instructor was meh, and my 16yo didn't enjoy her first drive. We shall see if I can turn it around :D

noname,
@noname@norcal.social avatar

@isagalaev it is, but I am looking forward to it :) I am very excited, more than she is, for sure :) We're going to learn a heck out of it!

My 16yo passed the written DMV test! Super-proud of her. Now she's ready for the training behind the wheel. I have to up my mechanic game soon :) I was planning to replace brakes on her VW "soon-ish, when I have motivation", I guess I have to find motivation ASAP.

Today's evening frustration: my old wall mount isn't really designed for my new TV. I may get lucky with different screws, but I'm increasingly leaning towards hiring someone else to replace the whole thing.

Hey ! Looking for a new set, as my old one is starting to die. Is there anything not aggressively "smart" on the market? As I'm using Roku anyway, I'd ideally like to never see the TV's own UI and never let it update itself or even connect to the Internet. Does such a thing still exist?

Picture-wise, I'm not very choosy. I'm pretty sure it's going to be better than my 15 years old plasma panel.

noname,
@noname@norcal.social avatar

@isagalaev 🤷🏻I am extremely happy with LG oled quality. I thought I wasn’t picky about LCD TV quality, but the contrast and black depth makes it very noticeable and welcome change. However, it is a smart TV and okayish at that. Better than my old Samsung, better than previous LGs, slightly worse than Roku, but tolerable. Since my Roku didn’t support 4K and TV covered all the apps I used, I didn’t order 4K Roku replacement and switched over to TV.
