    I've now got like, 5 different SD cards containing different special things inserted into different devices in this room, and if I took them out and tossed them in a plastic baggie I'd have no way of telling them apart. And unlike, say, floppies they're too small to write on or print out a label for. I feel like I need a solution for this.

    Maybe at some point I'll have a storage solution where I put labels on ziploc bags, put labels on the ziploc bags, then put them in a bigger ziploc bag.

    @mcc As the keeper of about 30 identical flash drives, I am kinda annoyed that my 128 MB flash drive in school accommodated a writeable label and most new ones really don't.

    Thirty minutes into my coding work being blocked on picking over documentation trying to figure out how to use my package manager, I realize I have a second problem because the installed version of my package manager is too old for a feature I need. Now I must (a) determine which package manager I used to install the package manager [Debian? The other, older Python package manager I used to install the newer Python package manager?] (b) figure how to use that other package manager

    ocdtrekkie,
    @ocdtrekkie@mastodon.social avatar

    @mcc I think the entire profession of software development is becoming how to glue packages from package managers together. 😆

    ocdtrekkie,

    @mcc I think the biggest issue is that it's too magical. It will work 90% of the time and then suddenly you have a Linux VM using the files synced to your Windows machine and everything crashes and burns.

    Nearly a decade ago, I had this crazy idea to buy every Steam game that exists. I have never come close to that goal. Not by a long shot. There are now over 100,000 games released on Steam.

    Now to decide what operating system to put on it.. thinking maybe debian, since I've been frustrated with ubuntu on a few recent things.

    It's mostly going to be a docker host.

    ocdtrekkie,
    @ocdtrekkie@mastodon.social avatar

    @thisismissem I went from Ubuntu to Debian mostly just because the switch to Snaps made Firefox basically unusable on the older hardware I tend to use for my Linux machines. There's probably advantages to more unique choices but there's also a lot of advantages in it being something simple and common and which everyone knows.

    The formerly abandoned Bell Labs building in Holmdel, NJ. At one point slated for demolition, the historic site has since been turned into Bell Works, a multi-use complex that was the filming location for the series Severance.

    how badly does azure have to mess up before people go back to self-hosting exchange?

    how bad does outlook have to get before people move off of exchange for mail/calendaring?

    ocdtrekkie,
    @ocdtrekkie@mastodon.social avatar

    @Viss On one hand, I consider moving back on-prem inevitable and mostly laugh at people who do expensive cloud migration projects anywhere on-prem remains an option.

    On the other hand, I've spent enough time on Exchange migration to understand why people do.

    ocdtrekkie,
    @ocdtrekkie@mastodon.social avatar

    @Viss I feel like most Exchange (and Windows Server, for that matter) problems can be boiled down to "Microsoft would make this suck less but they want you to go to 365/Azure and moved all the engineers there".

    ocdtrekkie,
    @ocdtrekkie@mastodon.social avatar

    @Viss Monthly pricing for enterprise software doesn't bother me nearly as much as taking it off-site does. Arguably if they are going to ship monthly updates to it, the subscription is more than just rent-seeking.

    But making my network vulnerable to an additional several thousand Microsoft employees being engineered in addition to my own is a big nonstarter.

    ocdtrekkie,
    @ocdtrekkie@mastodon.social avatar

    @Viss Yeah I'm aware, the issue there for me is "in the cloud". The on-prem Exchange version coming in 2025 is supposed to be on-prem software but sold as a subscription. (A model I would not be shocked to see Windows Server also pick up at some point.)

    My next movie is The Opposite Sex (2014) starring Mena Suvari, Kristin Chenowith, and Geoff Stults. This movie is also known as A Bet’s A Bet.

    Here’s the description:

    The story of Vince, New England’s most successful divorce attorney. To Vince, life is one big competition, and losing is unacceptable. This also applies in his dating life with his love ‘em and leave ‘em approach. Then Vince meets Jane, who is beautiful, successful and also extremely driven. Together they enter into a series of entertaining wagers with each other where the winner gets to decide the fate of the loser.

    This is a rom-com. I make no bones about this: it will probably be terrible.

    You might be wondering why I’ll be watching this. Part of it is that, yes, I’m completely willing to suffer through an awful movie. But also, I’m hoping that this movie will be memorably bad.

    iMDB rates this a 4.4. I’m willing to be wrong about my prediction, but I have low expectations.

    Has anybody finally had enough and quit Google search because of how bad it's gotten recently? Are you finding another search better?

    ocdtrekkie,
    @ocdtrekkie@mastodon.social avatar

    @kevincollier Stopped using Google a long time ago. DuckDuckGo and Brave return reasonable results for free, I currently pay for Kagi because it lets me customize my results to prioritize or deprioritize certain sites which gets me way better results.

    ocdtrekkie,
    @ocdtrekkie@mastodon.social avatar

    @elbers60 @kevincollier I also pay for email, which most people find unpalatable. (Fastmail <3) But the only reason people are used to these being free is because both search and email are used to collect data on users, you have to pay if you want them not to do that.

    Even Larry Page and Sergey Brin themselves once said advertising as a funding model is inherently a conflict of interest for ethical and high quality search. But the search engine has to operate itself somehow.

    It's fun to watch Apple bitch and moan and act like a petulant child because the EU told them to open their devices up, and I hope that the EU bitch slaps them into full compliance

    Also I'm pretty sure you can argue that the DMA should apply to opening up the walled gardens of video game consoles

    ocdtrekkie,
    @ocdtrekkie@mastodon.social avatar

    @drewdevault All of these gimmicks are just trying to run the clock. Apple and Google both make such an insane amount of money on the app tax that it's worth the penalties to literally just cheese the regulators while it takes them six months to a year to get enforcement going or revise the law.

    @user8e8f87c @Whiskeyomega @moderation @cepharum I suspect Michael P. gets a lot of accidental mentions like this, but I don't see any indication that is an officially-blessed account. (Maybe Mastodon shouldn't let people register that as a username!)

    So, as far as I understand, mastodon social implements some of the beta features that are not fully rolled out. How am I to give feedback on them? (Preferably without actually activating my super old unused github account - FYI, yes, I know how to use git but work on a local gitlab installation).

    Because I'm really unhappy about the way the replies work in the browser on mobile (I need to see the whole post I reply to, not just the first few lines!)

    ocdtrekkie,
    @ocdtrekkie@mastodon.social avatar

    @vicgrinberg @dgoldsmith Yeah, I'd definitely say the donor Discord probably has the best signal-to-noise ratio, and hence is probably the best way to get feedback noticed and discussed (imagine how many people probably mention Eugen or Mastodon on the fedi every day), but it requires using yet-another-proprietary-chat-service, and only the lobby channel is accessible for free.

    ocdtrekkie,
    @ocdtrekkie@mastodon.social avatar

    @vicgrinberg @dgoldsmith It does seem a but strange with Mastodon having a default 500 character limit, which is already pretty tight, that we can't see whole messages there. The cutoff makes sense when replying to a post which allows longer length posts, but not the default length ones.

    ocdtrekkie,
    @ocdtrekkie@mastodon.social avatar

    @vicgrinberg @dgoldsmith I recommend not using the actual app for one, the default behavior does things like "seeing what games you are currently playing", that I really don't think a chat app should be doing without permission. Within the normal web browser, you can manage it a bit better.

    Discord is something I would never touch if not for the ten groups in my life that insist I do.
